Brake Shift Interlock System
The brake shift interlock system prevents the selector lever from being shifted from the PARK position unless the brake pedal is applied. The brake shift interlock system consists of a Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) mounted on the steering column tube. When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the BSIA solenoid is off until the brake pedal is applied.
Transmission Control Switch (TCS)
The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is a momentary contact switch that is located on the transmission selector lever. The Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL) is located in the Instrument Cluster (IC). Pushing the TCS will either disengage or engage the Overdrive (O/D) function of the transmission. When O/D is disengaged, the TCIL will illuminate OFF on the IC . Each time the ignition switch is cycled, the transmission will automatically provide O/D operation regardless of TCS position the last time the engine was running.
Pinpoint Tests
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS for schematic and connector information.
Note. Refer to all TSBs and On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) messages that pertain to the transmission concern and follow the procedure as described.
Brake Shift Interlock Override
Note. This vehicle is equipped with a brake shift interlock feature that prevents the selector lever from being moved out of PARK when the ignition is in the ON position unless the brake pedal is applied.
Note. Use the override procedure to move the selector lever out of the PARK position, it is possible that a fuse has blown and the brake lights are not operational. Before driving the vehicle, verify that the brake lights are working.
If the selector lever cannot be moved out of the PARK position when the ignition is in the ON position and the brake pedal is applied, carry out the following steps
Scheme 16
- Apply the park brake.
- Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
- Pull down on the brake shift interlock plunger and move the selector lever into neutral.
- Start the engine.

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-365369) .
- Place the selector lever in the (D) position and hang a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the selector lever. Move the selector lever to the 1st gear position, then move back 2 detents to the (D) position. Hang the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.
- Verify the position of the selector lever indicator. If the selector lever indicator does not match the selector lever position, the selector lever indicator will need to be adjusted. For additional information, refer to «SELECTOR LEVER INDICATOR ADJUSTMENT»(ref-365396-S34171939452010070700000) .
- NOTE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket. Disconnect the transmission selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
- Remove the selector lever cable clip and remove the cable from the bracket.
- Place the manual control lever in the (D) position. Rotate the manual control lever fully counterclockwise. Rotate the manual control lever clockwise to the (D) position (2 detents).
- NOTE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket. NOTE: When installing the selector lever cable, make sure that the selector lever cable locking tabs are locked in place. Press the selector lever cable into the selector lever cable bracket and listen for the selector lever cable retainer to click into place. Pull back on the selector lever cable to make sure that the selector lever is locked into the selector lever cable bracket. Install the selector lever cable into the selector lever cable bracket.
- NOTE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket. NOTE: When installing the selector lever cable end, make sure that the selector lever cable end is correctly installed onto the manual control lever ball stud. Pull back on the selector lever cable to make sure that the selector cable end is correctly installed onto the manual control lever ball stud. Install the selector lever cable end onto the manual control lever ball stud.
- Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.
- NOTE: To prevent damage, do not adjust the transmission selector lever cable in any position other than (D). Verify that the vehicle will start only in PARK or NEUTRAL and that backup lamps illuminate in REVERSE. If not, repeat Steps 1 through 7 and carry out a Transmission Range (TR) sensor alignment. For additional information refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 5R44E AND 5R55E»(ref-365367) .

- Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-365431) .
- Place the selector lever in the (D) position. Rotate the selector lever clockwise until it bottoms out (1st gear), then rotate 2 detents counterclockwise ((D) position).
- Hang the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the selector lever.
- Center the indicator in the middle of the (D) position. Rotate the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the indicator.
- Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.
- Carefully move the selector lever into each detent and compare with the transmission settings. Readjust if necessary.
- Acceptable indicator position when the selector lever is in the PARK position.
- Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-365431) .
