Identification Codes: Overview Ford Ranger II

Scheme 1

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

The first 3 vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier (WMI).

1. 1FT - Ford Motor Company, USA, truck, completed vehicle

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes).

Scheme 4

1. Y - 4,001-5,000 pounds GVWR, active safety belts (all positions) with driver and front passenger air bags
2. Z - 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR, active safety belts (all positions) with driver and front passenger air bags

Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.

1. R10 - Rear wheel drive (RWD), Regular cab
2. R11 - Four wheel drive (4WD), Regular cab
3. R14 - RWD, SuperCab (2-door)
4. R15 - 4WD, SuperCab (2-door)
5. R44 - RWD, SuperCab (4-door)
6. R45 - 4WD, SuperCab (4-door)

The eighth VIN position identifies the engine type, displacement and number of cylinders.

Scheme 6

1. D - 2.3L, EFI, 4-cylinder, gas
2. E - 4.0L, EFI, SOHC, V6, gas
3. U - 3.0L, EFI, OHV, V6, gas

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.

Scheme 7

The tenth VIN position is the model year code.

Scheme 8

1. 7 - 2007

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

Scheme 9

1. P - Twin Cities (St. Paul, Minnesota)

The last 6 VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.
