REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Removal
Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Disconnect and plug brake hose from caliper. (Scheme 1) Mark caliper as right or left for installation reference. Remove caliper bolts. Pivot and slide caliper off guide pin. Remove brake pads, anti-rattle shims and brake pad clips. Remove guide pin dust boots and caliper guide pin bushings.
Installation
Install brake pad clips. Install brake pads. Ensure brake pad with wear indicator is installed to inside. Install anti-rattle springs. Apply high-temperature grease to guide pins. Install guide pins and dust boots. Position caliper onto guide pin. Pivot caliper onto brake pads. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Refill and bleed system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM .
Scheme 1
- Remove front wheels. Remove front brake caliper and pads. If caliper does not require service, removing brake hose from caliper is not necessary.
- Using mechanic's wire, secure caliper out of way. See «FRONT BRAKE CALIPER & PADS»(ref-44335-S09149633102001011500000) . Remove rotor from hub assembly. To install rotor, reverse removal procedure. Bleed brakes (if necessary). See «BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM»(ref-44335-S29445032462001011500000) .
Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Loosen parking brake cable adjusting nut and disengage cable from lever on caliper. Remove brake hose from caliper. Remove caliper bolt. Pivot caliper up, off disc pads and remove caliper. Note location of anti-rattle clips, retaining clips and "V" springs for installation reference.
- Install disc pads with anti-rattle clips, retaining clips and "V" springs in proper position. Using an Allen wrench, rotate manual adjustment gear until piston is fully seated in caliper. (Scheme 2)
- Lubricate guide pin bushings with high-temperature grease. Install caliper on guide pin and pivot caliper onto anchor bracket. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Bleed brakes. See «BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM»(ref-44335-S29445032462001011500000). Adjust parking brake. See «PARKING BRAKE»(ref-44335-S06602114172001011500000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
Scheme 2
Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove caliper and anchor bracket as an assembly. Support caliper assembly aside with wire. Remove grease cap. Unstake and remove spindle nut and washer. Discard nut. Remove rotor. Remove ABS signal ring (if equipped).
Install ABS signal ring (if equipped). Install rotor. Install washer and NEW spindle nut. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove grease cap. Remove and discard spindle nut. Remove brake drum. Remove brake shoe return springs and anti-rattle springs. (Scheme 3) NOTE: Unless broken or worn, leave parking brake strut adjuster mechanism and adjuster spring in place.
- Using a screwdriver, push in and twist hold-down spring to disengage it from hold-down pin. Remove both brake shoe hold-down springs. Remove rear brake shoes from backing plate. Remove wheel cylinder (if necessary).
Scheme 3
- Clean backing plate with an approved vacuum cleaner. Install parking brake strut adjuster mechanism, and adjuster spring (if removed). Use high temperature grease to lubricate shoe contact pads, adjuster mechanism toothed quadrant and anchor plate section where shoes ride.
- Install and tighten wheel cylinder (if removed). Position rear brake shoes on backing plate and install rear hold-down pin and spring. Install brake shoe return springs.
- Insert a screwdriver between knurled quadrant and parking brake strut. Twist screwdriver until quadrant just touches backing plate. (Scheme 4) To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Bleed brakes (if necessary). See «BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM»(ref-44335-S29445032462001011500000).
Scheme 4
Remove speed control actuator from its bracket. Disconnect brake fluid level indicator connector. Disconnect hydraulic brake lines from master cylinder. Remove master cylinder nuts and remove master cylinder. To install, reverse removal procedure. Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM .
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect brake fluid level indicator connector. Disconnect hydraulic brake lines from master cylinder. Remove master cylinder nuts and master cylinder. Disconnect manifold vacuum hose from brake booster.
- From under dash, remove brake pedal clevis pin. Remove brake pedal push rod from brake pedal. Remove booster-to-dash panel nuts. Remove brake booster and gasket.
Install new gasket on booster studs. Install brake booster. Lubricate and install clevis pin. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Bleed brakes. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Check brake pedal height. See BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS.
