ENGINE MECHANICAL
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
Note. Remove valve cover(s) before performing valve adjustment. See appropriate article in ENGINES section for removal and installation procedures.

IGNITION TIMING
Note. Ignition timing is not adjustable on distributorless ignition systems.
2.5L
- Ensure engine is at operating temperature, all accessories are off, and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Set parking brake. Ensure idle speed is correct.
- Connect timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Use jumper wire to connect Data Link Connector (DLC) STI terminal to GND terminal. (Scheme 11) Start engine. Check base ignition timing. See V6 BASE IGNITION TIMING table.
- If timing is not to specification, loosen distributor hold-down bolt. Adjust timing as necessary. Turn engine off. Remove jumper wire from DLC terminals. Start engine. Ensure advance mechanism functions when engine speed is increased.
Scheme 11
3.0L & 3.8L
- Ensure engine is at operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Put shift selector in Park or Neutral position. Set parking brake. Vehicle front wheels must be in straight-ahead position. Connect timing light to engine. Locate and disconnect single in-line Spark Output (SPOUT) connector, located near ignition control module. See IGNITION CONTROL MODULE (ICM) LOCATION table.
- With engine at idle RPM, check ignition timing. See V6 BASE IGNITION TIMING table for specification. Turn engine off. Reconnect in-line SPOUT connector. Check computed ignition timing. Computed ignition timing should be advanced beyond base timing.

BASE IGNITION TIMING
- Place transaxle in Park or Neutral. Turn all accessories off. Connect tachometer to engine. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Using jumper wire, connect Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals STI and GND. (Scheme 12)
- Ensure cooling fan is not running. Check and adjust base timing if necessary. Observe tachometer. If idle speed is not correct, locate idle adjustment screw on throttle body.
- Turn idle adjustment screw to adjust idle speed to specification. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. After adjustment is complete, remove jumper wire from DLC.

IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
3.2L SHO
Idle speed is not adjustable. If engine idle is not 730-830 RPM, check for contaminated fuel, vacuum leaks and correct ignition timing. Ensure throttle bore, EGR system and PCV system are clean. If these are okay, see G - TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV (3.2L SHO) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section for additional procedures.
Scheme 13
- Connect Super Star II scan tool to diagnostic connector. Enter KOER self-test. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section below. After Code 11 or 111 has been displayed, unlatch and then, within 4 seconds, latch STI button. - Observe scan tool readout. If a constant tone, solid light or STO LO is displayed, base idle speed is within range and no adjustment is necessary. Unlatch STI button to exit self-test.
- If a beeping tone, flashing light or STO LO at 8 Hz is displayed, Throttle Position (TP) sensor is out of range and should be checked. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR. Repeat KOER self-test.
- If a beeping tone, flashing light or STO LO at 4 Hz is displayed, base idle speed is too high. Go to step 6). If a beeping tone, flashing lighter STO LO at one Hz is displayed, base idle speed is too low. Go to next step.
- DO NOT clean throttle bore. Check throttle plate for presence of throttle plate orifice plug. (Scheme 13) If plug does not exist, turn idle adjusting screw clockwise only to adjust idle speed until conditions in step 2) are obtained. If plug from previous service exists, remove it and turn screw to obtain conditions in step 2). After adjustment is complete, ensure screw contacts lever pad.
- Turn engine off. Using tape, block off orifice in throttle plate. (Scheme 13) If orifice is already plugged, go to step 9).
- On mass airflow engines, reconnect air cleaner hose. Restart engine, and check idle speed. If engine stalls, crack throttle plate open using throttle plate stop screw. (Scheme 14) If idle speed is still too high as described in step 4), go to next step. If idle speed drops to specification or less as described in steps 2) and 4), go to step 9).
- Perform KOEO self-test. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section below. Check for fault codes, especially TP sensor fault code. If fault codes are present, repair as necessary. If TP sensor fault code is present, check for proper TP sensor output. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR. Ensure adjustment screw contacts lever pad. - Turn ignition off. Remove air cleaner hose, and remove tape covering throttle plate orifice. Select correct color plug for orifice. Plugs are available in Throttle Plate Plug Kit (FOPZ-9F652-A).
- Reconnect air cleaner hose, and start engine. Recheck idle speed. If idle speed is not within specification, turn adjusting screw clockwise until condition in step 2) is obtained. After adjustment, screw must contact lever pad.
- Perform KOEO self-test to ensure TP sensor fault code is not present. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section below. Move throttle plate to ensure it is not stuck in bore and linkage is not keeping throttle from closing. Note. If electric cooling fan comes on, discontinue testing until fan goes off.
Scheme 14
3.0L SHO
- Disconnect negative battery cable for at least 5 minutes and then reconnect it. Start engine and allow to idle for 2 minutes. Snap throttle open and then return it to idle.
- Lightly depress and release accelerator. If engine idle speed is correct, adjustment is not required. If engine idle speed is not correct, turn ignition off.
- Place transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T), and apply parking brake. Start engine. Raise engine speed to 2500 RPM for 30 seconds and then return it to idle. On 3.0L SHO models, if idle speed is less than 770 RPM or greater than 830 RPM, turn idle adjusting screw to adjust idle speed.
- Turn ignition off. Check throttle body for throttle plate orifice plug. (Scheme 13) If there is no plug, turn idle adjusting screw clockwise to adjust idle speed. If there is a plug, remove it and turn screw to obtain correct idle speed. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. After adjustment, ensure screw is in contact with lever pad.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect air cleaner hose. Using tape, block off orifice in throttle plate. If orifice is already plugged, go to step 8). On mass airflow engines, connect air cleaner hose. Start engine and check idle speed.
- If engine stalls, crack throttle plate open using throttle plate stop screw. (Scheme 14) If idle speed drops to specification or less, or if engine stalls, turn ignition off. Remove air cleaner hose. Remove tape covering throttle plate orifice.
- Select correct color plug for orifice. Plugs are available in Throttle Plate Plug Kit (FOPZ-9F652-A). Reconnect air cleaner hose, and start engine. Recheck idle speed. If idle speed is not within specification, turn adjusting screw clockwise to obtain correct idle speed. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Remove feeler gauge. Turn engine off. Disconnect battery for 10 minutes. Perform KOEO self-test to ensure trouble codes are not in PCM memory. Start engine, and allow idle to stabilize for 2 minutes. Snap throttle open and then return it to idle.
- With engine idling, lightly depress and release accelerator. Perform KOEO self-test, and service codes if present. On models with automatic overdrive transmission, check throttle valve pressure adjustment.
3.8L SC
- Connect Super Star II scan tool to diagnostic connector. Enter KOER self-test. See «G - TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV (3.8L)»(ref-22897) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Observe scan tool readout. After Code 11 or 111 has been displayed, unlatch and then, within 4 seconds, latch STI button.
- A single pulse tone indicates that entry mode has been successfully entered. If a constant tone, solid light or STO LO is displayed, base idle speed is within range and adjustment is not necessary. Exit self-test.
- If a beeping tone, flashing light or STO LO at 8 Hz is displayed, Throttle Position (TP) sensor is out of range and should be checked. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR. Repeat KOER self-test.
- If a beeping tone, flashing light or STO LO at 4 Hz is displayed, base idle speed is too high. DO NOT clean throttle bore. Turn air trim screw clockwise until conditions in step 2) are obtained. (Scheme 15) Go to step 6).
- If a beeping tone, flashing light or STO LO at one Hz is displayed, base idle speed is too low. DO NOT clean throttle bore. Turn air trim screw counterclockwise until conditions in step 2) are obtained. (Scheme 15) Go to step 6).
- Perform KOEO self-test to ensure trouble codes do not exist in PCM memory. See «G - TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV (3.8L)»(ref-22897) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Move throttle plate to ensure it is not stuck in bore and linkage is not keeping throttle from closing.
Scheme 15
Note. If electric cooling fan comes on, discontinue testing until fan goes off.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM wiring harness connector. Inspect terminals for damage and repair if necessary. Connect Breakout Box (014-00322) to PCM. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test pin No. 47 and ground.
- Voltage should be 0.1-1.1 volts with throttle fully closed and 3.1-4.4 volts with throttle fully open. If voltage is not within specification, loosen TP sensor screws. Adjust TP sensor until voltage is within specification.
Except 2.5L
Information for TP sensor adjustment is not available. Ensure TP sensor is properly installed. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR under FUEL SYSTEM in N - REMOVE/INSTALL/OVERHAUL article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If additional test procedures are required, see appropriate G - TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section below.
