3.0L (Except SHO) Valve Clearance Inspection

Note. Valve clearance is not adjustable. Check clearance to isolate worn components.

  1. Position piston No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Slowly apply pressure until valve lifter is completely collapsed on intake valve No. 1.
  2. Hold lifter in collapsed position, and measure clearance between rocker arm and tip of valve stem. If clearance is not within specification, repair or replace components as necessary. See 3.0L (EXCEPT SHO) COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER SPECIFICATIONS table.
  3. Repeat procedure for exhaust valves No. 1, 2 and 4, and intake valves No. 3 and 6. Rotate crankshaft 360 degrees (one revolution). Repeat procedure for exhaust valves No. 3, 5 and 6, and intake valves No. 2, 4 and 5.
