Valve Guide Inner Diameter

Note. Valve guides tend to wear in an hourglass pattern. The ball gauge can be inserted into the combustion chamber side of the valve guide if necessary.

Scheme 968

Scheme 968
  1. Use a ball gauge to determine the inner diameter of the valve guides in 2 directions at the top, middle and bottom of the valve guide. (Scheme 960): Measuring Valve Guide Inner Diameter
  2. Measure the ball gauge with a micrometer. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this article. (Scheme 961): Measuring Ball Gauge With Micrometer
  3. If the valve guide is not within specifications, ream the valve guide and install a valve with an oversize stem or remove the valve guide and install a new valve guide.

Scheme 969

Scheme 969: Valve Guide Reaming
  1. Use a hand-reaming kit to ream the valve guide. (Scheme 962): Reaming Valve Guide Using Hand-Reaming Kit
  2. Reface the valve seat.
  3. Clean the sharp edges left by reaming.

Scheme 970

Scheme 970: Valve Spring Installed Length
  1. Measure the installed length of each valve spring. If out of specification, install new components. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this article. (Scheme 963): Measuring Installed Length Of Valve Spring

Scheme 971

Scheme 971: Valve Spring Free Length
  1. Measure the free length of each valve spring. If out of specification, install new components as necessary. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this article. (Scheme 964): Measuring Free Length Of Valve Spring

Scheme 972

Scheme 972: Valve Spring Squareness
  1. Measure the out-of-square on each valve spring. Turn the valve spring and observe the space between the top of the valve spring and the square. Install a new valve spring if out of square. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this article. (Scheme 965): Measuring Valve Spring Out-Of-Square
