Removal and Installation

Note. If installing a new Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, the following procedures must be carried out to remove contamination from the A/C system. Failure to remove contamination from the A/C system, if present, will result in poor A/C performance and/or damage to the new A/C compressor and other components. If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the A/C system prior to installing a new A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS . If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the A/C system after a new A/C compressor has been installed. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS . Install a new Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV), as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure. Install a new receiver/drier as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.

Note. Installation of a new receiver/drier is not required when repairing the A/C system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the receiver/drier. Damage to the receiver/drier includes leaks in the receiver/drier, physical damage to the receiver/drier shell or desiccant, or moisture contamination. Moisture contamination results only from a complete loss of refrigerant and equalization of the refrigerant system pressure with atmospheric pressure for a period longer than one hour. If even a slight amount of positive refrigerant pressure is present in the system before repairs are carried out, the receiver/drier should not be replaced.

Note. A new A/C compressor may come equipped with an A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil already installed. If these components are not pre-installed, it will be necessary to transfer these parts from the old A/C compressor to the new compressor prior to installation of the A/C compressor if suitable for reuse.

  1. If flushing of the refrigerant system has not been carried out, recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  2. Remove the A/C compressor belt for additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-574129) .
  3. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  4. Remove the 2 A/C compressor fitting nuts and disconnect the fittings. Discard the O-ring seals and gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  5. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector.
  6. Detach the wire harness pin-type retainer from the rear of the A/C compressor.
  7. Remove the 2 A/C compressor bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-in).
  8. Remove the A/C comrpessor nut. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  9. NOTE: The A/C compressor stud must be removed with the A/C compressor. Completely loosen the A/C compressor stud. To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in).
  10. Remove the A/C compressor.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals and gasket seals. If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .
  12. If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .

Scheme 134: Removal and Installation
  1. Position the vehicle on a hoist with the gear selector in NEUTRAL. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  2. If filtering of the refrigerant system has not been carried out, recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  3. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-574129) . 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  4. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. All vehicles
  5. Remove the 2 A/C compressor fitting nuts and disconnect the fittings. Discard the O-ring seals and gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-ft).
  6. Remove the 3 bolts and lower the underbody shield. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  7. Disconnect the A/C clutch field coil electrical connector and detach the wire harness from the A/C compressor studs and the rear of the A/C compressor.
  8. Remove the 3 A/C compressor stud-bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. If flushing of the A/C system is not to be carried out, add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .

Note. The evaporator discharge air temperature sensor can be accessed from below the LH side of the instrument panel to the right of the accelerator pedal.

  1. Disconnect the A/C evaporator discharge air temperature sensor electrical connector.
  2. Detach and remove the A/C evaporator discharge air temperature sensor.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. 3.7L shown in illustration, 5.0L (4V) and 5.8L (4V) similar.

3.7L vehicles

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. Remove the lower radiator splash shield. All vehicles
  3. NOTE: For 5.0L (4V) and 5.8L (4V) vehicles, the ambient temperature sensor can be accessed through the airflow opening in the front bumper cover. Detach the ambient temperature sensor electrical connector pin-type retainer.
  4. Disconnect the ambient temperature sensor electrical connector and remove the ambient temperature sensor.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 139: Removal and Installation
  1. Remove the RH cowl vent screen. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-574185) .
  2. Using a suitable tool, detach the cabin air filter housing from the fresh air inlet duct.
  3. Remove the cabin air filter housing.
  4. Remove the cabin air filter.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Installation

Note. A new A/C compressor may come equipped with a clutch and pulley. If not, the A/C clutch components should be reused unless obvious signs of damage are found. If excessive grooving is found, a new A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley must be installed together. Otherwise, each component can be installed individually where needed.

Scheme 140: Installation
  1. Visually inspect the A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil for damage. Inspect for physical damage, including cracked or melted components or discoloration due to excessive heat. Inspect for excessive wear, including grooving in the A/C clutch disc and hub or A/C compressor pulley that is more than fingernail depth. Inspect for roughness in the A/C compressor pulley bearing.
  2. Install the A/C clutch field coil and attach the electrical connector pin-type retainer.
  3. Install the 3 A/C clutch field coil screws.
  4. NOTE: The Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor must be positioned on the press so that only the flat part of the A/C compressor housing is contacting the base with the A/C compressor shaft aligned with the center of the press shaft. If the A/C compressor is not installed correctly on the press, the A/C compressor and/or A/C compressor pulley will be damaged. Install the A/C compressor pulley. Install the A/C compressor on a suitable press. Position the A/C compressor pulley on the A/C compressor. Install the A/C Clutch Installer on the A/C compressor pulley. Using the press, install the A/C compressor pulley.
  5. Install the A/C compressor pulley snap ring.
  6. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub spacer(s) and the A/C clutch disc and hub.
  7. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the A/C Clutch Holding Tool. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  8. Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by adding or removing A/C clutch disc and hub spacers. For additional information, refer to the A/C clutch air gap procedure in «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  9. Install the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 3.7L»(ref-574188-S04194027492013082300000) or «AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR - 5.0L AND 5.8L»(ref-574188-S03555770622013082300000) .

All vehicles

  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  2. Remove the 8 upper radiator air deflector pin-type retainers and remove the upper radiator air deflector.
  3. Remove the condenser inlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  4. Disconnect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector. 3.7L vehicles
  5. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). All vehicles
  6. Remove the A/C compressor discharge fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  7. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals and gasket seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .
  9. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .

All vehicles

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  3. Remove the 8 upper radiator air deflector pin-type retainers and remove the air deflector. 3.7L and 5.0L (4V) vehicles
  4. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) housing and ACL inlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-574156) . 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  5. Remove the 2 degas bottle bolts and position the degas bottle aside. All vehicles
  6. Remove the 4 upper radiator bracket bolts and the 2 upper radiator brackets. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  7. Remove the condenser inlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  8. NOTE: The radiator must be positioned rearward to access the 2 upper condenser bolts. Remove the 2 upper condenser bolts. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  9. Remove the 9 lower radiator air deflector screws and the lower radiator air deflector.
  10. Remove the condenser outlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  11. Remove the 2 lower condenser nuts. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  12. NOTE: The condenser core must be removed from below the vehicle. Remove the condenser core.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .
  14. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .

  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  3. Remove the 9 lower radiator splash shield screws and the splash shield.
  4. Remove the condenser outlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  5. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace.
  6. Disconnect the positive and negative battery cables. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) . 5.0L (4V) vehicles
  7. Remove the engine appearance cover. All Vehicles
  8. Detach the positive battery cable pin-type retainer from the battery tray.
  9. Remove the positive battery cable nut at the junction box, detach the battery cable pin-type retainer and position the battery cable aside. To install tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  10. Detach the 2 wire harness pin-type retainers.
  11. Remove the 2 ground strap bolts at the RH shock tower. To install. tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  12. Remove the high-pressure service gauge port valve extension bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  13. Remove the evaporator outlet line bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  14. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
  15. Disconnect the engine-side heater hose connections.
  16. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system module tube. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL»(ref-574176) .
  17. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) . 5.0L (4V) and 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  18. Remove the upper radiator sight shield.
  19. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  20. Disconnect the electrical connector at the PCM bracket and detach the wire harness pin-type retainer.
  21. Loosen the 2 lower PCM bracket bolts. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  22. Remove the PCM bracket bolt near the PCM electrical connectors. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  23. Remove the junction box bolt and nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  24. Position the junction box aside and remove the PCM bracket stud. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  25. Remove the PCM and PCM bracket as an assembly. All vehicles
  26. Disconnect the electrical connector at the front of the RH shock tower and detach the wire harness pin-type retainer.
  27. Detach the 2 wire harness pin-type retainers at the RH shock tower.
  28. Remove the Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the gasket seals.
  29. Detach the 2 condenser-to-evaporator line clips.
  30. Detach the condenser-to-evaporator line from the TXV fitting bracket.
  31. Remove the condenser-to-evaporator line.
  32. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .
  33. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .

All vehicles

  2. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace. 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  3. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
  4. Disconnect the 2 heater hose connections at the rear of the RH cylinder head and position the heater hoses aside.
  5. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system module tube. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL»(ref-574176) . 3.7L vehicles
  6. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) . 5.0L (4V) vehicles
  7. Disconnect the positive and negative battery cables at the battery. For aditional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) .
  8. Remove the engine appearance cover. All vehicles
  9. Remove the evaporator outlet line fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  10. Remove the evaporator outlet line bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  11. Remove the Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  12. Remove the evaporator outlet line.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) . 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  14. Fill the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) . All vehicles
  15. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .

Note. If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.

Note. The heater core is not individually serviced. It is serviced only with the heater core and evaporator core housing.

  1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATER CORE AND EVAPORATOR CORE HOUSING»(ref-574188-S35622212952013082300000) .
  2. Transfer the heater core and evaporator core housing components as needed.
  3. Install the heater core and evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATER CORE AND EVAPORATOR CORE HOUSING»(ref-574188-S35622212952013082300000) .

Note. The heater core and evaporator core are not individually serviced. They are serviced only with the heater core and evaporator core housing.

Note. If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.

5.8L (4V) vehicles

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) . All vehicles
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  3. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
  4. Remove the instrument panel. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-574152) . 5.8L (4V) vehicles
  5. Remove the supercharger. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-574156) .
  6. Disconnect the heater hose fittings at the rear of the RH cylinder head and position the heater hoses aside. All vehicles
  7. Disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses at the heater core.
  8. Remove the Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  9. Remove the 2 exterior heater core and evaporator core housing nuts at the dash panel. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  10. Detach the antenna cable retainers from the heater core and evaporator core housing.
  11. Remove the interior heater core and evaporator core housing nut. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  12. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .
  14. Fill the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .

  1. Remove the Front Display Interface Module (FDIM). For additional information, refer to «INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS»(ref-574164) .
  2. NOTE: Vehicles equipped with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) have 2 HVAC module electrical connectors. Vehicles equipped with Electronic Manual Temperature Control (EMTC) have 1 HVAC module electrical connector. Disconnect the 2 HVAC module electrical connector(s).
  3. Release the HVAC module retaining clips and remove the HVAC module.
  4. NOTE: Be sure that all HVAC module electrical connectors are securely fastened before installing the center instrument panel finish panel. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. Installation of a new receiver/drier is not required when repairing the A/C system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the receiver/drier. Damage to the receiver/drier includes leaks in the receiver/drier, physical damage to the receiver/drier shell or desiccant, or moisture contamination. Moisture contamination results only from a complete loss of refrigerant and equalization of the refrigerant system pressure with atmospheric pressure for a period longer than one hour. If even a slight amount of positive refrigerant pressure is present in the system before repairs are carried out, the receiver/drier should not be replaced.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
  3. Remove the lower radiator air deflector.
  4. Remove the receiver/drier bolt. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  5. Remove the receiver/drier. Discard the receiver/drier fitting O-ring seals.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to the «REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING»(ref-574127-S22835045972013082300000) .
  7. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
