DESCRIPTION

Note. Positive traction type differentials are also referred to as Traction-Lok differentials.

CAUTIONUse of unequal size tires on rear axle for extended mileage will result in accelerated wear of Traction-Lok limited slip unit.

Traction-Lok is a limited slip type differential that directs major driving force to wheel with greatest amount of traction. This is accomplished by a spring-loaded multiple disc clutch pack located behind each side gear. Each clutch pack uses friction-surfaced clutch discs splined to the side gear and steel clutch plates held by the differential case.

Traction-Lok differential uses 2 sets of multiple disc clutches to control differential action. Side gear mounting distance is controlled by a set of alternating steel and friction plates and a steel shim of select size to control side gear position.

In operation, preload spring pressure is accompanied by side gear thrust load to compress clutch packs, providing resistance to normal differential action. Preload spring pressure is calibrated to allow some slippage of clutch packs under variable torque conditions such as turning corners.

Traction-Lok differential assembly except for the differential case and its internal components, is identical to the conventional axle shaft.

AXLE RATIO & IDENTIFICATION

Traction-Lok differential unit can be identified by 3 methods. First method is by raising rear of vehicle. Place transmission in Neutral, and manually rotate one rear wheel. If both wheels rotate in same direction, differential is a Traction-Lok differential.

Second method is by referring to an axle identification tag attached to differential housing cover top bolt. Axle ratio, ring gear diameter and differential type are contained on axle code tag. (Scheme 8) The gear ratio number will contain the letter "L" if it is a Traction-Lok differential.

Third method is by referring to Ford Motor Co. Vehicle Identification Label attached to left front door lock panel or pillar post. This label contains an axle identification code. Axle identification code is located in the lower right corner column marked "AX". Axle ratio may also be determined by this code number/letter. See AXLE RATIO IDENTIFICATION table.
