MODULE CONFIGURATION
Note. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has to be flash programmed using a flash cable. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Note. Some modules must be programmed as part of the repair procedure. If correct procedure is not followed, module may not function correctly and/or set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Modules that require programming should not be exchanged between vehicles. In most cases, a vehicle's parameter values or settings are unique to that vehicle.
Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). NGS tester will automatically attempt to retrieve the module configuration information from all modules and from a back-up location in the PCM when vehicle identification (ID) is carried out. If module and PCM do not contain correct information, the NGS tester will either request "As Built" data or display a list of items that you will need to manually configure them. NGS tester will program the module based on data entered. Calibration update, Programmable Module Installation (PMI) and programmable parameters are the available methods for module programming. Programmable Parameters
Programmable parameters are controlled features that can be modified while in service, typically by the customer. If a module that has been modified by programmable parameters needs replacement, Programmable Module Installation (PMI) procedure will maintain parameters in their altered state if NGS tester was able to communicate with old module during vehicle ID routine. If NGS tester was not able to communicate with old module during vehicle ID routine, programmable parameters may be used to return controlled features to their altered state.
SYSTEM TESTS
Note. Tests included in this article are written specifically for New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may be used, but may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.
Note. Before performing any system tests, inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Pay particular attention to terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire), No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire).
