Engine Oil Pan Removal Ford LTD Crown Victoria I

1.6L (114") Escort, EXP & Lynx

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect starter wiring, remove knee brace and remove starter. Remove knee braces at transaxle.
  2. Remove starter attaching bolts and starter. Remove 2 oil pan-to-transmission bolts. Disconnect exhaust inlet pipe at manifold and converter. Remove inlet pipe and support bracket, if equipped. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and oil pan.

1.9L (116") Escort & Lynx

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect starter wiring, remove knee brace and remove starter. Remove knee braces at transaxle.
  2. Remove starter attaching bolts and starter. Remove 2 oil pan-to-transmission bolts. Disconnect exhaust inlet pipe at manifold and converter. Remove inlet pipe and support bracket, if equipped. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and oil pan.

2.0L (121") Diesel Escort, Lynx, Tempo & Topaz

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

2.3L (140") OHC Mustang

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove fan shroud. If equipped with electric fan, disconnect power lead and remove fan and shroud assembly. Drain cooling system and disconnect upper and lower hoses at radiator.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove right and left engine support through bolts. Using a jack, raise engine as far as possible and place support blocks between the mounts and crossmember pedestals. Remove jack.
  3. Remove shake brace, sway bar retaining bolts and lower sway bar. Remove steering gear retaining bolts and lower gear. Disconnect starter wiring, remove starter. Remove oil pan bolts, lower pan to crossmember and remove pan.

Note. The number 4 piston must be up so that rear of oil pan clears the crankshaft.

2.3L (140") OHC Thunderbird

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase and cooling system. Remove right and left engine support through bolts. Using a jack, raise engine as far as possible.
  2. Place support blocks between the mounts and crossmember pedestals. Remove jack. Remove steering gear retaining nuts and bolts. Remove bolt retaining steering flex coupling to steering gear. Move steering gear forward and down.
  3. Remove shake brace, disconnect starter wiring and remove starter. Remove engine rear support-to-crossmember nuts. Using a jack, raise transmission. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

2.3L (140") HSC Tempo & Topaz

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove lower radiator hose to drain coolant. (On manual transaxle models, remove roll resistor.) Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
  2. Disconnect exhaust pipe bracket from oil pan. Remove heater return hose at lower radiator and water pump inlet tube locations. Remove tube support tabs and position air conditioning line aside. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

2.5L (153") Sable & Taurus

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Drain coolant by removing lower radiator hose. Remove roll restrictor (MTX only). Disconnect starter cable.
  2. Remove starter. Disconnect exhaust pipe from oil pan. Remove engine coolant tube located at lower radiator hose, at water pump and at tabs on oil pan. Position air conditioner line off to side. Remove oil pan. To install, reverse removal procedure and tighten to specification.

3.0L (183") Sable & Taurus

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove oil level dipstick. Raise and support vehicle. Remove electrical connector and retainer clip at low oil level sensor (if equipped).
  2. Drain oil from crankcase. Remove starter moter. Disconnect EGO sensor. Remove exhaust pipe assembly and lower engine/flywheel dust cover from converter housing. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and oil pan.

3.8L (232") All Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly including intake duct assembly. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan. Remove engine oil dipstick.
  2. Remove electrical connector and retainer clip at low oil level sensor, if equipped. Raise and support vehicle and remove exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold attaching nuts. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter. Remove shift linkage bracket from transmission converter housing.
  3. Disconnect transmission cooler lines at radiator. Remove flywheel access cover. On LTD/Marquis and Cougar/Thunderbird models, disconnect steering flex coupling. Remove bolts attaching steering gear to main crossmember. Rest steering gear on frame away from oil pan.
  4. On all models, remove front insulator-to-chassis nut and washer assembly. Raise engine 2-3". Do not allow transmission dipstick tube and thermactor downstream air tube to contact each other. Place support blocks between engine mounts and frame.
  5. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan. On models requiring additional clearance, lower engine and remove dipstick tube and downstream air tube. (Manual Clamp Cutter T78P-9481-A or equivalent is needed to disconnect air tube from catalyst.)
  6. Raise engine up to 5" to obtain adequate clearance. Remove oil pan bolts, loosen oil pan and lower onto crossmember. Remove pickup tube and tube support bracket nut. Lower pickup tube assembly into pan and remove pan through front of vehicle.

5.0L (302") & 5.8L (351") Continental, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mark VII & Town Car

  1. Remove air cleaner, disconnect accelerator and kickdown rods at carburetor and remove accelerator mounting bracket. (With EEC, remove EGR valve and cooler.) Remove fan shroud bolts and position shroud over fan. Disconnect wiring from harness and remove wiper motor.
  2. Disconnect windshield washer hose and remove wiper motor mounting cover. Remove dipstick and dipstick tube retaining bolt at exhaust manifold. With EEC, remove thermactor air dump tube retaining clamp and thermactor crossover tube at rear of engine.
  3. On all models, raise vehicle and drain crankcase. With EEC, remove filler tube and drain transmission. Disconnect starter wiring, remove starter. On all models, disconnect fuel line from fuel pump and inlet pipes from exhaust manifold. CAUTION: Before disconnecting fuel lines on vehicles equipped with a high pressure electric fuel pump, relieve pressure at Schrader valve on fuel charging assembly.
  4. With EEC, remove exhaust gas oxygen sensor from exhaust manifold and thermactor secondary air tube-to-converter housing clamps. Disconnect exhaust pipes to catalytic converter outlet. Remove catalytic converter secondary air tube and inlet pipes to exhaust manifold.
  5. On all models, remove rear engine mount through bolts and shift crossover bolts at transmission. Disconnect transmission kickdown rod. Remove flywheel access cover. Remove brake line retainer from front crossmember. Using a jack, raise engine as far as possible.
  6. Place support blocks between engine mounts and chassis brackets. Remove jack. Disconnect low oil sensor from oil pan, if equipped. Remove oil pan bolts and lower pan. Remove oil pump pickup tube assembly and place in oil pan. Remove oil pan.

Note. Vehicles equipped with dual sump oil pans require removal of both drain plugs to drain crankcase.

Mustang

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fan shroud bolts and position shroud over fan. Remove engine oil dipstick tube assembly. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase and disconnect steering flex coupling.
  2. Remove steering gear to main crossmember bolts and let steering gear rest on frame. Remove nuts and washers from engine mounts to No. 2 crossmember and disconnect transmission cooler lines. Raise engine and place support blocks between engine mounts and No. 2 crossmember.
  3. Remove flywheel access cover and rear "K" braces. Remove oil pan bolts and lower oil pan to frame. Remove oil pump bolts and and inlet tube attaching nut. Lower oil pump into pan. Remove oil pan, rotating crankshaft if necessary to clear oil pan.

Cougar & Thunderbird

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove air cleaner assembly. Remove fan shroud bolts and position shroud over fan. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect oil level indicator from oil pan. Drain crankcase and transmission. Remove driveshaft.
  2. Disconnect gearshift bellcrank lever and speedometer cable from transmission. Remove flywheel access cover, and flywheel-to-converter bolts. Remove transmission kickdown control shaft and gear selector valve-rod. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
  3. Remove exhaust catalyst converter and muffler inlet pipes. Using a jack, support transmission and remove converter housing-to-cylinder block bolts. Remove engine mount bolts. Remove No. 3 crossmember and transmission mount assemblies.
  4. Unplug neutral start switch electrical connector and disconnect transmission oil cooler lines. Remove transmission and converter as an assembly. Remove flywheel and rear cover plate. Remove steering gear bolts and lay gear aside.
  5. Raise and support engine in a position allowing adequate clearance for oil pan removal. Remove oil pan bolts and lower oil pan to crossmember. Remove oil pump and pickup tube assembly and place in pan. Remove oil pan from vehicle.
