Principles of Operation
The supplemental restraint system (SRS) consists of the following
- Driver and passenger air bag module
- Safety belt buckle pretensioners
- Side air curtains (deploy in side impact only)
- Front and side impact sensors
- Clockspring
- Occupant classification sensor (OCS) system
- Air bag warning indicator (located in the instrument cluster [IC] module)
- Passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator
- Restraints control module (RCM)
The RCM includes a backup power supply. This feature provides sufficient backup power to deploy the SRS in the event that the ignition circuit is lost or damaged during impact. The backup power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately one minute after power and/or ground has been removed from the RCM. The RCM performs an internal, external circuitry and component "self-test" during each startup. If an SRS fault exists, the RCM sends a message to IC module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator. In addition to the self-test at start up, the RCM continuously monitors all of its external and internal circuitry for faults.
In a frontal collision, the impact sensors located in the front of the vehicle detect the sudden deceleration and send an electrical signal to the RCM. The RCM uses the information from the impact sensors and the OCS system in the deployment determination. If the RCM determines that deployment is required, the RCM sends voltage and current to the deployable devices (squibs) causing the solid chemical propellant to undergo a rapid chemical reaction. This controlled reaction produces harmless nitrogen gas that fills the air bag(s)/side air curtains and/or activates the safety belt buckle pretensioners to remove slack from the safety belt(s).
The RCM communicates through the data link connector (DLC) on the high-speed controller area network (HS-CAN). The RCM also communicates over the HS-CAN with the IC module, PCM and the occupant classification system module (OCSM).
Normal Operation
During normal operation, the instrument cluster (IC) module will illuminate the air bag warning indicator continuously for 6 seconds after the ignition switch is placed to the RUN or ON position. If the supplemental restraint system (SRS) is fault free, the air bag warning indicator will turn off and remain off. If a fault is detected in the SRS, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate and remain illuminated for the rest of the key cycle. The restraints control module (RCM) will communicate to the IC module via the high-speed controller area network (HS-CAN). The IC module will illuminate the air bag indicator based on messaging from the RCM or if there is no communication between the RCM and IC module.

During normal operation, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then go out after the ignition switch is placed in the ON position and no air bag fault exists. Control of the air bag warning indicator is a function of the instrument cluster (IC) module based on information it receives from the restraints control module (RCM). The default mode for the air bag warning indicator is on. The RCM sends a message to the IC module to turn the indicator off if no air bag fault exists. If the RCM detects a problem with the supplemental restraint system (SRS) it will send a message to the IC module to turn the air bag warning indicator on.
If the IC module detects a problem with the air bag warning indicator, it will send a fault message to the RCM. The RCM and IC module will store DTC B1868 in memory.
- DTC B1868 Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Failure - If the RCM receives a message from the IC module of an air bag warning indicator failure, it will set this DTC.

When the ignition is in the ON position, the passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator prove-out period is initiated by the restraints control module (RCM). The RCM briefly activates the PAD indicator to verify to the occupants correct functional operation of the PAD indicator. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .
If the RCM detects an open or short to ground on the PAD indicator circuit, it will store DTC B1884 in memory and send a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator.
- DTC B1884 PAD Warning Lamp Circuit Failure - If the RCM detects an open circuit or short to ground on the PAD indicator circuit, it will set this DTC.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- PAD indicator
- RCM

The occupant classification sensor (OCS) system is used to classify the front passenger seat occupant in the event of a deployable impact. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .
The OCSM monitors the pressure sensor and circuity for faults. If the OCSM detects a fault with the sensor or circuitry, it will store DTC B2290 in memory and send a message to the RCM which stores DTC B2290 in memory and sends a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator.
The OCS system components (seat cushion foam pad, bladder with pressure sensor and OCSM) are calibrated to each other and are serviced as an assembly. The OCS system components are not to be installed separately. If a new OCS system component or seat cushion foam pad are needed, a new OCS system service kit (seat wiring harness, seat cushion frame, seat cushion foam pad, bladder with pressure sensor and OCSM) must be installed as an assembly.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

The restraints control module (RCM) monitors safety belt buckle pretensioner circuits for faults. The RCM will set a DTC if a short to battery or short to ground fault is detected. The RCM will also set a DTC if the loop resistance is less than 0.9 ohm or greater than 5 ohms. The normal expected resistance range is 1.23 to 3.31 ohms. If a loop resistance is between 0.9 and 1.23 or between 3.31 and 5 ohms, a DTC will not set but there exists a strong potential for an intermittent fault. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the safety belt buckle pretensioner circuits, it will store DTC B2292 in memory and send a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) monitors all front air bag module circuits for faults. The RCM will set a DTC if a short to battery or short to ground fault is detected. The RCM will also set a DTC if the loop resistance is less than 0.9 ohm or greater than 5 ohms. The normal expected resistance range of driver air bag loop 1 and loop 2 is 1.47 to 4.26 ohms and 1.23 to 3.31 ohms for the passenger air bag loop 1 and loop 2. If a driver air bag loop resistance is between 0.9 and 1.47 or between 4.26 and 5 ohms and a passenger air bag loop resistance is between 0.9 and 1.23 or between 3.31 and 5 ohms, a DTC will not set but there exists a strong potential for an intermittent fault. If the RCM detects a fault on any of the front air bag circuits, it will store DTC B2293 in memory and send a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator.

A side air bag module provides protection of the thorax area (between the neck and abdomen) of the body, working in conjunction with the head protection provided by a side air curtain module. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .
The restraints control module (RCM) monitors the side air bag module circuits for faults. The RCM will set a DTC if a short to battery or short to ground fault is detected. The RCM will also set a DTC if the loop resistance is less than 0.9 ohm or greater than 5 ohms. The normal expected resistance range is 1.23 to 3.31 ohms. If a loop resistance is between 0.9 and 1.23 or between 3.31 and 5 ohms, a DTC will not set but there exists a strong potential for an intermittent fault. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the side air bag circuits, it will store DTC B2295 in memory and send a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) monitors all of the impact sensor circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the impact sensor circuits, it will store DTC B2296 in memory and send a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag warning indicator.
Note. Early production vehicles are equipped with 2 front impact severity sensors; late production vehicles are equipped with 1 front impact severity sensor. The impact sensors are NOT interchangeable between early and late production vehicles. If an incorrect impact sensor is installed, erroneous DTCs will result.

The belt tension sensor operates in conjunction with the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system. The occupant classification system module (OCSM) interprets a variable voltage signal provided by the safety belt tension sensor to identify the possible presence of a child safety seat in the front passenger seat. The voltage output of the belt tension sensor is proportional to the amount of tension applied to the sensor by the belt, no tension low voltage (approximately 0.95 volt) and high tension high voltage (approximately 3.8 volts).
The OCSM checks the belt tension sensor circuits for faults. If the OCSM detects one of the following faults on any of the belt tension sensor circuits, it will report the failure to the restraints control module (RCM). The RCM will store DTC B2909 in memory and send a message to the instrument cluster (IC) module to illuminate the air bag indicator.
The OCS system components (seat wiring harness, seat cushion frame, seat cushion foam pad, bladder with pressure sensor and OCSM) are calibrated to each other and are serviced as an assembly. The OCS system components are not to be installed separately with the exception of the belt tension sensor. If a new OCS system component or seat cushion foam pad are needed, a new OCS service kit (seat cushion foam pad, bladder with pressure sensor, seat wiring harness and OCSM) must be installed as an assembly.
