Scheme 1: Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Locator

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

Scheme 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer code.

  1. 1 FA - Ford Motor Company, USA, passenger car
  2. 3 FA - Ford Motor Company, Mexico, passenger car

Scheme 4: Restraint Type

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint type code.

  1. B - Active safety belts - all positions less driver and front passenger air bags
  2. F - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags
  3. H - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags with driver and front passenger side impact air bags

Scheme 5: Vehicle Line, Series And Body Type

Positions five through seven indicate vehicle line, series and body type.

  3. P33 - four-door sedan - LX
  4. P34 - four-door sedan - SE
  5. P35 - four-door station wagon - ZTW
  6. P36 - four-door station wagon - SE

  9. P39 - three -door sedan - ZX3

The eighth VIN position identifies the engine displacement and number of cylinders.

  1. 3 - ZETEC - 2.0L, DOHC, four-cylinder
  2. 5 - ZETEC -2.0L, SVT, four-cylinder
  3. P - SPI - 2.0L, SOHC, four-cylinder
  4. Z - 2.3L (4V), DOHC, four-cylinder

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.

The tenth VIN position is the model year code.

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

Scheme 10: Production Sequence Number

The last six VIN positions are a numeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.

  1. 100001-599999 - Ford Motor Company vehicle

Scheme 11: Vehicle Certification (VC) Label Locator

The vehicle certification (VC) label contains the manufacturer name, the month and year of manufacture, the certification statement, and the VIN. It also includes gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) and tire information.

Scheme 13: Paint Code

The first set of paint code numbers/letters indicate the vehicle primary body color. The second set of letters/numbers (if applicable) indicate a two-tone or accent body color.
