The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as air bag system, is designed to provide increased accident protection for driver and passenger by deploying air bags in a front-end collision or side air bags in a side collision. The air bags, stored in center of steering wheel, instrument panel above glove box and in driver"s and passenger"s seat back, deploy in about 40 milliseconds after impact sensors close. Air bag system is designed to be used with 3-point seat belts.
During a front-end collision, the Restraints Control Module (RCM), also known as air bag control module, uses inputs from front impact sensor to discriminate between an event that warrants air bag deployment and an event that does not. Using inputs from left front seat track position sensor and seat belt switches in conjunction with front impact sensor inputs, RCM determines which air bags to deploy and at what deployment rate. In a crash of sufficient force, the RCM signals the first stage air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners to simultaneously deploy. Second stage driver- and passenger-side front air bag charges will ignite between 10-100 milliseconds after first stage ignition. Deployment at 100 milliseconds has negligible effect on the air bag inflation, but is used as a disposal function to eliminate subsequent deployments.
During a side or lateral collision, the RCM, using inputs from right and/or left side crash sensor, discriminates between an event that warrants air bag deployment and an event that does not. In a collision of sufficient force, the RCM signals the right and/or left seat air bag module(s) to deploy.
Air bag system includes the following components: RCM, back-up power supply (located inside the RCM), right- and left side crash sensors (attached to floor under outboard side of front seats), dual-stage driver-side air bag module, dual-stage passenger-side air bag module, side air bag modules (located behind outboard bolster of driver and passenger seat backs), left front seat belt retractor pretensioner and right front seat belt buckle pretensioner, seat belt switches, driver seat track position sensor, AIR BAG warning light, front impact sensor, ignitor assemblies (located in air bag modules), clockspring and associated wiring harnesses. SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
- When checking air bag system operation (also known as prove out system), and upon completion of each diagnostic test, check for faults in air bag system. To check system, turn ignition switch to RUN position. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates for about 6 seconds and then goes out, air bag system is functioning properly and no fault exists.
- If a fault is detected in air bag system during initial system check, AIR BAG warning light will flash a code sequence, indicating a fault in system. Count number of flashes after fault code has cycled twice. Number of flashes represents a code number used to diagnose air bag system. See «DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-170306-S06864149002005011000000) . If AIR BAG warning light either fails to light or stays on continuously, go to «DIAGNOSTIC SYMPTOMS»(ref-170306-S12649643392005011000000) table.
- If a system fault exists and AIR BAG warning light fails to light, an audible tone will be heard, indicating AIR BAG warning light is out and service is required. AIR BAG warning light will need to be repaired before diagnosis can be continued.
Description
During normal operation, the AIR BAG warning light will be continuously illuminated for 3 seconds after the ignition switch is placed in RUN position and after 5 cycles of Light Flash Code (LFC), if a fault exists. Be sure to cycle ignition switch and look for a continuous AIR BAG warning light without LFC.
When air bag deploys during a collision, Restraints Control Module (RCM) stores Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1231 in memory and AIR BAG warning light be continuously illuminated. DTC B1231 indicates that a crash has been recorded.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks driver-side air bag module circuit for short to battery by monitoring voltage at RCM harness connector C424 terminals No. 11 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 12 (Green/Red wire). If RCM detects short to battery on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1916 in memory and flash Code 3 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance of driver-side air bag circuit at RCM connector C424, terminals No. 11 (Green/Orange wire, circuit 91S-JA8) and No. 3 (Green/Red wire, circuit 15S-JA8). If RCM detects open circuit, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1932 in memory and flash Code 1 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors capacitance of driver-side air bag ignitor at RCM connector C424, terminals No. 11 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 12 (Green/Red wire). If RCM detects a capacitance out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1915 in memory and flash Code 3 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks passenger-side air bag module circuits for short to battery or ground by monitoring RCM harness connector C424, terminals No. 9 (Green/Red wire) and No. 10 (Black/White wire). If RCM detects short to battery on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1925 in memory and flash Code 3 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors passenger-side air bag circuit at connector C424, terminals No. 9 (Green/Red wire) and No. 10 (Black/White wire). If RCM detects high resistance, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1933 in memory and flash Code 2 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance of passenger-side air bag circuit at RCM connector C424, terminals No. 5 (Green/White wire) and No. 6 (Black/White wire). If RCM detects a resistance out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1920 in memory and flash Code 2 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks left side air bag module circuits for short to battery by monitoring connector C423, terminals No. 29 (Black/Green wire) and No. 30 (Green/Black wire). If RCM detects a short to battery, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1992 in memory and flash Code 5 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks left side air bag module circuit for high resistance by monitoring connector C423, terminals No. 29 (Black/Green wire) and No. 30 (Green/Black wire). If RCM detects high resistance, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1994 in memory and flash Code 5 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks left side air bag module circuit capacitance by monitoring connector C423, terminals No. 29 (Black/Green wire) and No. 30 (Green/Black wire). If RCM detects capacitance that is out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B2117 in memory and flash Code 5 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks right side air bag module circuits for short to battery by monitoring connector C423, terminals No. 17 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 18 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects a short to battery, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1996 in memory and flash Code 6 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks right side air bag module circuit for high resistance by monitoring connector C423, terminals No. 17 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 18 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects high resistance, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1998 in memory and flash Code 6 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks right side air bag module circuit capacitance by monitoring connector C423, terminals No. 23 (Green/Red wire) and No. 24 (Black/Orange wire). If RCM detects capacitance that is out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B2118 in memory and flash Code 6 on AIR BAG warning light.
Left side crash sensor monitors severity of crash event. If severs enough, sensor will signal Restraints Control Module (RCM) to deploy left side air bag module. RCM monitors left side crash sensor circuit for signal that is out of range on connector C423, terminals No. 37 (Brown wire, circuit No. 9-JA39) and No. 38 (White wire, circuit No. 8-JA39). If RCM detects signal that is out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B2853, B2854, B2873 or U2027 in memory and flash Code 5 on AIR BAG warning light.
- Check left side crash sensor circuit for short to battery Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-170306-S06776258282005011000000) under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C423. See «RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)»(ref-170306-S27118291122005011000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Access and disconnect left side crash sensor harness connector. See «SIDE CRASH SENSOR»(ref-170306-S18039233392005011000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 38 (White wire). (Схема №19) Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 37 (Brown wire). If voltage is present in either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-170306-S20707224062005011000000). Activate air bag system. See «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-170306-S31995908812005011000000) under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear Diagnostic Trouble codes (DTCs). See «CLEARING DTCS»(ref-170306-S09751522922005011000000) under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See «ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST»(ref-170306-S00139591992005011000000) under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170306-S42841436242005011000000). If voltage is not present both circuits, go to next step.
- Check left side crash sensor circuit for open or short to ground Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance of White wire between harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 38 and harness side of left side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance of White wire between ground and harness side of left side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, repair open or short to ground in White wire. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check. If resistances are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check left side crash sensor for open or short to ground Measure resistance of Brown wire between harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 19 and harness side of left side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance of Brown wire between ground and harness side of left side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Brown wire. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check.
- Check left side crash sensor Install NEW left side crash sensor. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B2853, B2854, B2873 or U2027 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, replace RCM. If DTC B2853, B2854, B2873 or U2027 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, air bag system is okay at this time. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check.
Right side crash sensor monitors severity of crash event. If severe enough, sensor will signal Restraints Control Module (RCM) to deploy right side air bag module. RCM monitors right side crash sensor circuit for signal that is out of range on connector C423, terminals No. 39 (White/Violet wire, circuit No. 8-JA40) and No. 40 (Black/White wire, circuit No. 9-JA40). If RCM detects signal that is out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B2852, B2874, B2875 or U2028 in memory and flash Code 6 on AIR BAG warning light.
- Check right side crash sensor circuit for short to battery Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-170306-S06776258282005011000000) under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C423. See «RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)»(ref-170306-S27118291122005011000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Access and disconnect right side crash sensor harness connector. See «SIDE CRASH SENSOR»(ref-170306-S18039233392005011000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 40 (White/Violet wire). (Схема №19) Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 39 (Black/White wire). If voltage is present in either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-170306-S20707224062005011000000). Activate air bag system. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-170306-S42841436242005011000000). If voltage is not present in both circuits, go to next step.
- Check right side crash sensor circuit for open or short to ground Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance of White/Violet wire between harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 40 and harness side of right side crash sensor connector. (Схема №19) Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance of White/Violet wire between ground and harness side of right side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, repair open or short to ground in White/Violet wire. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check.
- Check right crash sensor circuit for open or short to ground Measure resistance of Black/White wire between harness side of RCM connector C423, terminal No. 39 and harness side of right side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance of Black/White wire between ground and harness side of right side crash sensor connector. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check. If resistances are not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Black/White wire. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check.
- Check right side crash sensor Install NEW right side crash sensor. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B2852, B2874, B2875 or U2028 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, replace RCM. If DTC B2852, B2874, B2875 or U2028 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, air bag system is okay at this time. Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Perform on-demand self-test. Perform system operation check.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks left seat belt pretensioner circuits for short to battery by monitoring RCM harness connector C423, terminals No. 27 (Green/Blue wire) and No. 28 (Black/Blue wire). If RCM detects short to battery on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1878 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks left seat belt pretensioner circuit for high resistance by monitoring RCM harness connector C423, terminals No. 27 (Green/Blue wire) and No. 28 (Black/Blue wire). If RCM detects high resistance on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1877 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks left seat belt pretensioner circuit for out of range capacitance by monitoring RCM harness connector C423, terminals No. 27 (Green/Blue wire) and No. 28 (Black/Blue wire). If RCM detects capacitance that is out of range, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1876 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks right seat belt pretensioner circuits for short to battery by monitoring RCM harness connector C423, terminals No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 20 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects short to battery on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1882 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks right seat belt pretensioner circuit for high resistance by monitoring RCM harness connector C423, terminals No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 20 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects high resistance on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1881 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks right seat belt pretensioner circuit for out of range capacitance by monitoring RCM harness connector C423, terminals No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 20 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects out of range capacitance on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1880 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) checks driver-side air bag circuit for short to ground by monitoring RCM harness connector C424, terminals No. 11 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 12 (Green/Red wire). If RCM detects short to ground on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1936 in memory and flash Code 3 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors driver-side air bag circuit resistance at connector C424, terminals No. 11 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 12 (Green/Red wire). If RCM detects low resistance on either terminals, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1934 in memory and flash Code 1 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors passenger-side air bag circuits for short to ground at connector C424, terminals No. 9 (Green/White wire) and No. 10 (Black/White wire). If RCM detects a short to ground, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1938 in memory and flash Code 3 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors passenger-side air bag circuit resistance at connector C424, terminals No. 9 (Green/White wire) and No. 10 (Black/White wire). If RCM detects low resistance on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1935 in memory and flash Code 2 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance to ground at connector C423, terminals No. 29 (Black/Green wire) and No. 30 (Green/Black wire). If RCM detects resistance less than 1000 ohms at either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1993 in memory and flash Code 5 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance of left side air bag module circuit at connector C423, terminals No. 29 (Black/Green wire) and No. 30 (Green/Black wire). If RCM detects resistance less than 1.4 ohms, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1995 in memory and flash Code 5 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance to ground at connector C423, terminals No. 17 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 18 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects resistance less than 1000 ohms on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1997 in memory and flash Code 6 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance of right side air bag module circuit at connector C423, terminals No. 23 (Green/Orange wire, circuit No. 15S-JA38) and No. 24 (Black/Red wire, circuit No. 91S-JA38). If RCM detects resistance less than 1.4 ohms, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1999 in memory and flash Code 6 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance to ground at connector C423, terminals No. 27 (Green/Blue wire) and No. 28 (Black/Blue wire). If RCM detects short to ground, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1879 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors circuit resistance at connector C423, terminals No. 27 (Green/Blue wire, circuit No. 15S-JA33) and No. 28 (Black/Blue wire, circuit No. 91S-JA33). If RCM detects low resistance in circuit, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1885 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors resistance to ground at connector C423, terminals No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 20 (Black/Red wire). If RCM detects short to ground, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1883 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors circuit resistance at connector C423, terminals No. 19 (Green/Orange wire, circuit No. 15S-JA34) and No. 20 (Black/Red wire, circuit No. 91S-JA34). If RCM detects low resistance in circuit, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1886 in memory and flash Code 4 on AIR BAG warning light.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors AIR BAG warning light circuit for open or short to ground at connector C424, terminal No. 4 (Black/Green wire). If RCM detects an open or short to ground in circuit, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1869 in memory and, if other DTCs are present, send a signal to warning tone indicator to produce 5 sets of 5 tone bursts.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors AIR BAG warning light circuit for short to battery at connector C424, terminal No. 14 (Black/Green wire). If RCM detects an short to battery, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1870 in memory and, if other DTCs are present, send a signal to warning tone indicator to produce 5 sets of 5 tone bursts.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors driver-side air bag second stage circuits for short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance at connector C424, terminals No. 13 (Green/Black wire) and No. 19 (Black/Green wire). If RCM detects faults on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B2228, B2230, B2232 or B2234 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors passenger-side air bag second stage circuits for short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance at connector C424, terminals No. 7 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 8 (Green/Yellow wire). If RCM detects faults on either terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B2229, B2231, B2233 or B2235 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) supplies 5 volt reference signal from RCM connector terminal No. 25 (Yellow/Red wire) to left front seat track position sensor, left front seat belt buckle switch and right front seat belt buckle switch If RCM detects faults on terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1462 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors left front seat belt switch circuit for short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance at connector C423, terminal No. 36 (Brown wire). If RCM detects short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance on terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B2433, B2434 or B2435 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors right front seat belt switch circuit for short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance at connector C423, terminal No. 23 (Brown/Yellow wire). If RCM detects short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance on terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B2437, B2438 or B2439 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors left front seat track position sensor circuit for short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance at connector C423, terminal No. 34 (Brown/Red wire). If RCM detects short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance on terminal, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) C1947, C1948 or C1982 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
Restraints Control Module (RCM) monitors front impact sensor circuits for short, short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance at connector C423, terminals No. 20 (White wire) and No. 21 (Brown wire). If RCM detects short to ground, short to battery, open or low resistance on terminals, it will store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B2855, B2226, B2227 or B2856 in memory and cause AIR BAG warning light to flash.
