Charging System - Generators & Regulators: Diagnosis Ford Focus I

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Verify customer's complaint. Verify battery condition. Inspect accessory drive belt and tensioner. Inspect battery junction box fuse No. 10 (10-amp). Inspect central junction box fuse No. 50 (7.5-amp). Check all connections for looseness or corrosion. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .

ON-VEHICLE TESTING

Note. On-vehicle testing for generator is not available from manufacturer.

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-test. Perform appropriate test under SYSTEM TEST in accordance with DTC retrieved. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table. Codes listed in this table are only charging system related codes. For complete DTC listing and testing procedures, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX

TEST A: WARNING INDICATOR ON WITH ENGINE RUNNING

  1. Remove and inspect battery junction box fuse No. 10 (10-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, repair short to ground in Red wire.
  2. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between negative battery terminal and generator housing. If voltage is less than.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is greater than.5 volt, clean and tighten generator mounting and negative battery cable connection. If fault is still present, replace negative battery cable.
  3. Measure voltage between generator terminal B+ and positive battery terminal. (Scheme 2) If voltage is less than.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is greater than.5 volt, clean and tighten positive battery cable connection. Retest system operation. If fault is still present, replace positive battery cable.
  4. Measure voltage of Red wire at generator terminal B+. (Scheme 2) If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair Red wire between generator and battery junction box. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-99478-S32390112502001071600000). Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 3-pin connector. Measure voltage of Red wire at generator connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, inspect battery junction box fuse No. 10 (10-amp). If fuse is blown, replace fuse and retest system operation. If fuse is okay, repair open in Red wire between generator and battery junction box. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-99478-S32390112502001071600000). Retest system operation.
  6. Reconnect generator 3-pin connector. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record PCM DTCs. If any DTCs are retrieved, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are retrieved, replace generator. See «GENERATOR»(ref-99478-S30489572512001071600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
