OVERVIEW
| WARNING | To prevent the risk of high-voltage shock, always follow precisely all warnings and service instructions, including instructions to depower the system. The high-voltage hybrid system utilizes approximately 300 volts DC, provided through high-voltage cables to its components and modules. The high-voltage cables and wiring are identified by orange harness tape or orange wire covering. All high-voltage components are marked with high-voltage warning labels with a high-voltage symbol. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death. |
The traction motor is a liquid-cooled 3-phase AC permanent magnet motor consisting of field coils in a stator and a permanent magnet rotor. The transmission control module (TCM) calculates the angle of the rotor using Hall Effect sensors and applies the correct voltage to the three phases of the field coils to produce a positive torque effect in the rotor. Additionally, when regenerative braking is commanded by the powertrain control module (PCM), the TCM can configure the motor to act as a generator by allowing the rotor to generate voltage in the field coils. The resulting AC voltage is then converted to DC to recharge the high voltage batteries, thus recapturing energy that would normally be lost as friction heat in the brakes. The traction motor is coupled to a 1-speed reduction gear. There is no need for a reverse gear, as the motor itself reverses when the transmission gear selector is placed in Reverse. The traction motor is liquid cooled and contains an internal temperature sensor to monitor for any overheating conditions.

| WARNING | Before beginning any service procedure in this information, REFER to Safety Warnings in 100-00 GENERAL INFORMATION -- FOCUS ELECTRIC . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury. |
| WARNING | Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. |
Note. To prevent coolant loss, clamp the coolant hoses next to the component. Draining of the cooling system is not required.
