Drive Belt - Incorrect Installation

Note. Incorrect accessory drive belt installation will cause excessive drive belt wear and may cause the drive belt to come off the pulleys.

Non-standard accessory drive belts can track differently or incorrectly. If an accessory drive belt tracks incorrectly, install a new accessory drive belt to avoid performance failure or loss of the drive belt.

With the engine running, check accessory drive belt tracking on all pulleys. If the edge of the accessory drive belt rides beyond the edge of the pulleys, noise and premature wear will occur. Make sure the accessory drive belt rides correctly on the pulley. If an accessory drive belt tracking condition exists, proceed with the following

1. Visually check the accessory drive belt tensioner for damage and wear, especially the mounting pad surface and arm alignment. If the accessory drive belt tensioner is not installed correctly, the mounting surface pad will be out of position. If the tensioner arm is worn, the arm will be out of alignment. Either of these conditions will result in chirp and squeal noises.
2. With the engine running, visually observe the grooves in the pulleys (not the pulley flanges or the pulley forward faces) for excessive wobble. Install new components as necessary.
3. Check all accessories, mounting brackets and the accessory drive belt tensioner for any interference that would prevent the component from mounting correctly. Correct any interference condition and recheck the accessory drive belt tracking.
4. Tighten all accessories, mounting brackets and accessory drive belt tensioner retaining hardware to specification. Recheck the accessory drive belt tracking.

Removal

Note. Under no circumstances should the accessory drive belt, tensioner or pulleys be lubricated as potential damage to the belt material and tensioner damping mechanism will occur. Do not apply any fluids or belt dressing to the accessory drive belt or pulleys.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, Refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-372753) .
2. Working from the top of the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the generator pulley.
3. Remove the 7 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
4. Working from under the vehicle, remove the accessory drive belt.

Installation

1. Working from under the vehicle, position the accessory drive belt on all pulleys, with the exception of the generator pulley.
2. NOTE: After installation, make sure the accessory drive belt is correctly seated on all pulleys. Working from the top of the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt on the generator pulley.
3. Install the RH splash shield and the 7 pin-type retainers.

2. Remove the RH front wheel and tire. For additional information, Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-372756) .
3. Remove the 7 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
4. Working from under the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

1. Working from under the vehicle, position the accessory drive belt on all pulleys with the exception of the crankshaft pulley.
2. NOTE: After installation, make sure the accessory drive belt is correctly seated on all pulleys. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt on the crankshaft pulley.
3. Install the RH splash shield and the 7 pin-type retainers.
4. Install the RH front wheel and tire. For additional information, Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-372756) .

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, Refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-372753) .
2. Working from the top of the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the generator pulley.
3. Remove the 7 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
4. Remove the 3 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.

1. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the 3 bolts. Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
2. NOTE: After installation, make sure the accessory drive belt is correctly seated on all pulleys. Working from the top of the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt on the generator pulley.
3. Install the RH splash shield and the 7 pin-type retainers.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, Refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-372753) .
2. Remove the RH front wheel and tire. For additional information, Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-372756) .
3. Remove the 7 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
4. Working from under the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
5. Remove the 3 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.

1. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the 3 bolts. Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
2. Working from under the vehicle, position the accessory drive belt on all pulleys with the exception of the crankshaft pulley.
3. NOTE: After installation, make sure the accessory drive belt is correctly seated on all pulleys. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt on the crankshaft pulley.
4. Install the RH splash shield and the 7 pin-type retainers.
5. Install the RH front wheel and tire. For additional information, Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-372756) .

1. Working from the top of the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the generator pulley.
2. Remove the RF wheel and tire. For additional information, Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-372756) .
3. Remove the 7 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
4. Position the accessory drive belt off the crankshaft pulley.
5. Position the Stretchy Belt Remover on the power steering pump pulley belt as shown in illustration.
6. NOTE: Feed the Stretchy Belt Remover on to the power steering pump pulley approximately 90 degrees. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and feed the Stretchy Belt Remover evenly on the power steering pump pulley as shown in illustration.
7. Remove the power steering pump belt. Fold the Stretchy Belt Remover under the inside of the power steering pump belt as shown in illustration. In one quick motion, firmly pull the Stretchy Belt Remover out of the RH fender well, removing the coolant pump belt.

1. Install the power steering drive belt on the crankshaft pulley.
2. NOTE: After installation, make sure the power steering drive belt is correctly seated on the crankshaft and power steering pump pulleys. Position the power steering drive belt around the Stretchy Belt Installer Tool and the power steering pump pulley. Make sure the belt is engaged with the power steering pump pulley and rotate the crankshaft clockwise to install the power steering drive belt.
3. Position the accessory drive belt on the crankshaft pulley.
4. NOTE: After installation, make sure the accessory drive belt is correctly seated on all pulleys. Working from the top of the vehicle, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt.
5. Install the RH splash shield and the 7 pin-type retainers.
6. Install the RF tire and wheel. For additional information, Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-372756) .
