Console - Overhead

The overhead console consists of the following components

Both the long and the short overhead consoles are held in place with spring clips.

  2. Remove the front console. For additional information, refer to «CONSOLE - FRONT, FLOOR»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console__console-front-floor) .
  3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) .
  4. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information) .
  5. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM). For additional information, refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) .
  6. Remove the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-washer-system) .
  7. Remove the roll restrictor crossbeam-to-roll restrictor bolt. To install, clean the bolt using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads and tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the 4 restrictor crossbeam-to-strut tower bolts and the crossmember. To install, clean the bolt using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads and tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
  9. Disconnect the heater hoses.
  10. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) manifold bolt. Install new O-ring seals. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  11. Remove the RH instrument panel cowl top bolt. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  12. Remove the 2 LH instrument panel cowl top bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  13. Position the front door weatherstrips aside.
  14. Position the scuff plates aside. Pull the front of the scuff plate trim panels upward to release the retaining clips.
  15. Remove the cowl trim panels. Pull the panel rearward to release it from the clips.
  16. Remove the lower instrument panel insulator.
  17. Remove the floor shifter. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) .
  18. Remove the front carpet sections. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the drivers footrest pad.
  19. Disconnect the RH main wiring harness electrical connector and radio antenna connector.
  20. Remove the pin-type retainers and remove the rear footwell duct.
  21. Remove the bolts and detach the ground wires from the floor pan tunnel.
  22. Remove the instrument panel side panels.
  23. Remove the RH and LH A-pillar trim panels. Position the weatherstrip aside near the A-pillar. Pull the top outboard edge of the A-pillar trim panel toward the inside of the vehicle to disengage the retaining clips. Pull the A-pillar trim panel upward to remove it from the dash panel.
  24. Remove the steering column cover.
  25. Position the hood release handle aside. Remove the 2 screws and position the handle aside.
  26. Remove the steering column pinch bolt. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  27. Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connectors.
  28. Disconnect the restraints control module (RCM) small electrical connector.
  29. Remove the tunnel reinforcement bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  30. Remove the instrument panel. Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the right door.
  31. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to «STEERING COLUMN»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column) .
  2. Remove the steering column multi-function switch. For additional information, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#steering-column-switches) .
  3. Remove the instrument cluster. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-cluster-system) .
  4. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  5. Remove the cowl trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) .
  6. From behind the cowl trim panels, disconnect the electrical connectors.
  7. Remove the lower instrument panel insulator.
  8. Remove the front floor console. For additional information, refer to «CONSOLE - FRONT, FLOOR»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console__console-front-floor) .
  9. Remove the floor shifter. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) .
  10. Remove the 2 instrument panel center finish panel screws.
  11. Remove the instrument panel center finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  12. Remove the 2 audio unit screws.
  13. Remove the audio unit. Disconnect the audio unit electrical connectors and the antenna cable.
  14. Detach the instrument panel side panels.
  15. Remove the A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) .
  16. Remove the steering column cover.
  17. Position the hood release handle aside. Remove the 2 screws and position the handle aside.
  18. Remove the headlamp switch.
  19. Remove the glove compartment door. Disengage the glove compartment dampener from the keyway. Remove the glove compartment door.
  20. Remove the passenger side air bag. For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
  21. Remove the passenger assist handle. Through the glove compartment opening, remove the 3 screws.
  22. Reposition the passenger side air bag. Through the glove compartment opening, remove the 6 passenger side air bag nuts. Reposition the passenger side air bag.
  23. Detach the cross-car panel. Disconnect the PAD indicator electrical connector.
  24. Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connectors. CAUTION: To avoid damaging the instrument panel upper section, this step requires the help of an assistant. Do not bend or crimp the instrument panel upper section upon removal.
  25. Remove the instrument panel upper section. Remove the 8 screws. Remove 1 screw from each side at the upper portion of the panel. Remove 3 screws from each side at the lower portion of the panel and remove the instrument panel upper section.
  26. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the instrument panel upper section. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL UPPER SECTION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console) .
  2. Evacuate and recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information) .
  3. Disconnect the heater hoses.
  4. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) manifold bolt. Discard the O-ring seals.
  5. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM), for additional information, refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) .
  6. Remove the transaxle roll restrictor bolt.
  7. Remove the transaxle roll restrictor bar bolts.
  8. Remove the LH instrument panel cowl top bolt.
  9. Remove the 2 RH instrument panel cowl top bolts.
  10. Remove the steering column pinch bolt.
  11. Remove the A/C floor duct.
  12. Remove the 4 tunnel brace bolts.
  13. Disconnect the small restraints control module (RCM) electrical connector.
  14. Disconnect the large RCM electrical connector. Pinch the thumb tab and pivot the connector position assurance lever all the way back until it stops. Pull out and disconnect the large RCM electrical connector.
  15. Remove the crossbeam. Remove the tunnel reinforcement bolts.
  16. If installing a new in-vehicle crossbeam, remove the heater core and evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATING & VENTILATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-heating-ventilation) .

  1. If installing a new in-vehicle crossbeam, install the heater core and evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATING & VENTILATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-heating-ventilation) .
  2. Using the previously marked alignment points, position the crossbeam and install the 6 tunnel reinforcement bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  3. Make sure the large RCM electrical connector position assurance lever is in the full RELEASE position before attempting to connect the connector.
  4. Position the large RCM electrical wiring connector into the RCM. CAUTION: Do not push the connector to where the lever pivots and seats itself. Light pressure is needed to get the connector into position on the RCM before using the lever to fully seat the connector. With the large RCM electrical wiring connector uniformly aligned to the RCM, lightly push in until a subtle audible click is heard and a slight resistance is felt.
  5. Connect the large RCM electrical wiring connector. Using the connector position assurance lever, pivot it toward the RCM, drawing the connector into the RCM. Make sure the thumb tab is engaged to the retainer on the RCM and locked in place.
  6. Install the A/C floor duct.
  7. Install the steering column pinch bolt. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  8. Install the RH instrument panel cowl top bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  9. Install the LH instrument panel cowl top bolt. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  10. Install the transaxle roll restrictor bar bolts. Tighten to 55 Nm (40 lb-ft).
  11. Install the transaxle roll restrictor bolt. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  12. Install the PCM. For additional information, refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) .
  13. Install the TXV manifold bolt. Install the new O-ring seals. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  14. Connect the heater hoses.
  15. Fill the A/C system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information) .
  16. If a new in-vehicle crossbeam was installed, a Radio Spacer Kit (6F93-18N800-AA) must be installed prior to the installation of the radio. Prior to installing the radio into the instrument panel assembly, clean the instrument panel radio attachments surfaces of any loose dust, dirt or debris. Apply a general adhesive on one side of the spacer and attach to the instrument panel radio surface. Repeat for all 4 places on the instrument panel radio attachment surfaces. Install the radio using the new fasteners and tighten to 3 Nm (26 lb-in).
  17. Install the instrument panel upper section. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL UPPER SECTION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console) .

  1. Remove the floor shifter trim ring.
  2. Remove the floor console center finish panel.
  3. Remove the 2 instrument panel center finish panel screws.
  4. Remove the instrument panel center finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Adjust the steering column to the full TILT-DOWN position.
  2. Remove the 2 instrument cluster finish panel screws.
  3. Release the locking tabs on the steering column upper shroud located behind the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel and the steering column upper shroud as an assembly.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the floor shifter trim ring.
  2. Remove the floor console center finish panel.
  3. Remove the 2 floor console front screws.
  4. Remove the floor console LH and RH finish panels. To install, apply 110 Nm (81 lb-ft) of force to the Dylock area in the front of the panel.
  5. Remove the 4 front floor console bolts.
  6. Remove the 2 front floor console-to-instrument panel screws. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  8. Remove the floor console.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
