Overview
The windshield wiper/washer system is activated by the wiper/washer switch. The wiper/washer switch is either mounted to the right side of the SCCM (all except police package) or is integrated into the multifunction switch (police package only). The following functions of the windshield wiper/washer system are available
- Front windshield wipe/wash
- Wipers on with headlamps on
- Speed dependent wipers
- Rain sensitive wipers
- Courtesy wipe

Windshield Wiper Operation
The wiper relay is activated whenever the ignition is in the ON position. The wiper relay provides voltage to the windshield wiper motor.
The wiper system is activated by the wiper/washer switch. The SCCM commands the windshield wiper motor to activate the appropriate wash, low, high and intermittent modes through a private LIN.
When the wiper/washer switch is in the HIGH position, the windshield wiper motor also receives a ground signal which is hardwired directly from the SCCM (bypassing the logic within the module). This fail-safe circuit makes sure that the windshield wipers will function in HIGH speed mode in the event of a LIN communication failure.
The rear window wiper system is activated by the wiper/washer switch. The rear wiper motor is controlled by the windshield wiper motor. The following functions of the rear window wiper/washer system are available

Rear Wiper Operation
When the wiper/washer switch is in the INT 1 or INT 2 position, the SCCM sends the request to the windshield wiper motor through the LIN. When the request is received, the windshield wiper motor supplies a ground signal to an integral relay within the rear window wiper motor which activates the motor. The position of the wiper/washer switch determines how often the windshield wiper motor supplies the ground signal. The rear window wiper motor is self parking.

- CHECK FOR SCCM DTCs Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, perform SCCM self-test. Are any SCCM DTCs present? Yes: For B1131:02 or B1131:08, GO to 4 . For all other SCCM DTCs , REFER to «DTC CHART: STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE (SCCM)»(ref-517559-S07719168212012121200000) for diagnosis. No: GO to 2 .
- CHECK THE FRONT WIPER COMMAND LOW SPEED (F_WIP_SLO_SW) PID Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, view SCCM PID. While monitoring the SCCM PID F_WIP_SLO_SW, place the wiper/washer switch into the windshield wiper LOW position. Does the PID read ON when the wiper/washer switch is in the LOW position? Yes: GO to 3 . No: INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to «Wiper and Washer Switch»(ref-517620-S32974121162012121200000) . If the concern is still present, INSTALL a new SCCM. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE (SCCM)»(ref-517559-S19442282422012121200000) .
- CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor. Measure: Windshield Wiper Motor Ground C125 Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 6 GD120 (BK/GN) - - Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: GO to 4 . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor (if not previously disconnected). Ignition ON. Measure: Windshield Wiper Motor Ground C125 Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 8 CRW03 (VT/WH) - - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to 9 . No: GO to 5 .
- CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE FRONT WIPER RELAY Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Front Wiper Relay. Measure: Front Wiper Relay Ground Front Wiper Relay Socket Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 3 SBB04 (GN/RD) - - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to 6 . No: VERIFY BJB fuse 4 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate «OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-514995) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- CHECK FOR IGNITION VOLTAGE TO THE FRONT WIPER RELAY Measure: Front Wiper Relay Ground Front Wiper Relay Socket Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 2 CDC64 (WH/BU) - - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to 7 . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK THE FRONT WIPER RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Measure: Front Wiper Relay Ground Front Wiper Relay Socket Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 1 GD120 (BK/GN) - - Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: GO to 8 . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK THE FRONT WIPER RELAY Carry out the Relay-Micro ISO component test. Refer to «RELAY - MICRO ISO»(ref-485880-S30921475402012071400000) for schematic and connector information. Did the wiper relay pass the component test? Yes: REPAIR circuit CRW03 (VT/WH) for an open. No: INSTALL a new front wiper relay.
- CHECK FOR CORRECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Ignition OFF. Inspect the windshield wiper motor connector. Repair: corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary Reconnect the windshield wiper motor connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Connect: Front Wiper Relay (if previously disconnected). Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to «Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-517620-S27759262852012121200000) . No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

- CHECK THE REAR WIPER OFF SWITCH (R_WIPE_OFF_SW) PID Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, view SCCM PID R_WIPE_OFF_SW. Make sure the wiper/washer switch is in the OFF position. Is the PID R_WIPE_OFF_SW status ON (indicating the wiper/washer switch is in the OFF position)? Yes: GO to 2 . No: INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to «Wiper and Washer Switch»(ref-517620-S32974121162012121200000) . TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, INSTALL a new SCCM. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE (SCCM)»(ref-517559-S19442282422012121200000) .
- CHECK THE REAR WINDOW WIPER OPERATION WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR DISCONNECTED Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor. Ignition ON. Verify the rear window wiper operation. Is the rear window wiper still operating? Yes: GO to 3 . No: GO to 4 .
- CHECK THE REAR WINDOW WIPER COMMAND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Rear Window Wiper Motor. Measure: Windshield Wiper Motor Ground C125 Chassis Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 11 CRW02 (GY/BU) - - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to 5 . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK FOR CORRECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Ignition OFF. Inspect the windshield wiper motor connector. Repair: corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary Reconnect the windshield wiper motor connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. - CHECK THE FRONT WIPER COMMAND LOW SPEED (F_WIP_SLO_SW) PID Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, view SCCM PIDs . While monitoring the SCCM PID F_WIP_SLO_SW, place the wiper/washer switch into the windshield wiper LOW speed position. Does the PID read ON when the wiper/washer switch is in the LOW speed position? Yes: If the vehicle is equipped with rain sensitive wipers, GO to 2 . If the vehicle is not equipped with rain sensitive wipers, GO to 3 . No: INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to «Wiper and Washer Switch»(ref-517620-S32974121162012121200000) . TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to 9 .
- ISOLATE THE RAIN SENSOR Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Rain Sensor. Ignition ON. Operate the windshield wipers in low speed. Do the windshield wipers operate in low speed? Yes: INSTALL a new rain sensor. REFER to «Rain Sensor»(ref-517620-S29971154172012121200000) . No: GO to 3 .
- CHECK THE WIPER PARK OPERATION Place the windshield wiper switch in the HIGH position. When the wiper blades are in the middle of the sweep pattern, place the windshield wiper switch in the OFF position. Do the windshield wipers complete the sweep and then park correctly? Yes: GO to 5 . No: GO to 4 .
- CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR LOGIC GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor. Measure: Windshield Wiper Motor Ground C125 Ground Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 3 GD120 (BK/GN) - Ground Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. - CHECK FOR CORRECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Ignition OFF. Inspect the windshield wiper motor electrical connector. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminal - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect: Windshield Wiper Motor. Connect: SCCM C2414A. Connect: Rain Sensor (if equipped). Make sure the electrical connectors seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to «Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-517620-S27759262852012121200000) . OPERATE the system and DETERMINE if the concern is still present. If the concern is still present, GO to 9 . No: The system is operating correctly at this time. When an inoperative condition exists in the rain sensitive wiper system (or if the rain sensitive wiper feature is not enabled through the message center), the rain sensitive wiper system defaults to the normal intermittent (dwell time) settings.

- CHECK THE LOW SPEED WIPER OPERATION Ignition ON. Place the wiper/washer switch to the low speed setting and observe the windshield wipers. Place the wiper/washer switch to the off setting. Do the low speed wipers operate when the low speed setting is selected? Yes: GO to 2 . No: REFER to «Diagnostic Routine F: The Windshield Wipers Operate in High Speed Only»(ref-517620-S15639698322012121200000) .
- CHECK FOR DTC B1131:02 OR DTC B1131:08 Using a scan tool, perform the SCCM self-test. Is DTC B1131:02 or DTC B1131:08 present? Yes: REFER to «Diagnostic Routine F: The Windshield Wipers Operate in High Speed Only»(ref-517620-S15639698322012121200000) . No: GO to 3 .
- CHECK FOR DTC B10AD:02 OR DTC B10AD:08 Review the results from the SCCM self-test. Is DTC B10AD:02 or DTC B10AD:08 present? Yes: GO to 12 . No: GO to 4 .
- VERIFY THE RAIN SENSITIVE WIPER FEATURE IS ENABLED IN THE VEHICLE MESSAGE CENTER Access the vehicle settings in the message center using the steering wheel controls. Make sure the rain sensing feature is enabled. Is the rain sensing feature enabled? Yes: GO to 5 . No: ENABLE the rain sensing feature. INFORM the customer how to enable/disable the rain sensing feature.
- CHECK THE INPUT FROM THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH Using a scan tool, monitor the SCCM wiper/washer switch PIDs: F_WIP_INT_D1 F_WIP_INT_D2 F_WIP_INT_D3 F_WIP_INT_D4 F_WIP_INT_D5 Cycle the multifunction switch from off through each of the auto/intermittent sensitivity settings. Do the PIDs correspond correctly with each setting selection? Yes: GO to 6 . No: INSTALL a new wiper/washer switch. REFER to «Wiper and Washer Switch»(ref-517620-S32974121162012121200000) . If the concern is still present, INSTALL a new SCCM. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE (SCCM)»(ref-517559-S19442282422012121200000) .
- CHECK THE WINDSHIELD FOR DAMAGE Ignition OFF. Inspect the windshield glass for any cracks, pits or other visible damage around the area of the rain sensor. Is any windshield damage present near the area of the rain sensor? Yes: INSTALL a new windshield glass. REFER to «WINDSHIELD GLASS»(ref-517617-S26450018392012121200000) . No: GO to 7 .
- CHECK THE WINDSHIELD GLASS FOR STREAKING Ignition ON. Turn the multifunction switch to the low speed wiper setting and while applying water to the windshield surface. Observe the wipe quality, especially around the area or the rain sensor. Is any streaking present on the windshield around the area of the rain sensor? Yes: GO to 8 . No: GO to 10 .
- CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES FOR STREAKING Ignition OFF. Clean the windshield glass with glass cleaner. Clean the wiper blades with isopropyl alcohol swabs. Wipe the entire length of the wiper blades. Ignition ON. Place the multifunction switch to the low speed wiper setting and while applying water to the windshield surface. Observe the wipe quality, especially around the area or the rain sensor. Was there noticeable improvement in the wipe quality after cleaning the glass and the wiper blades? Yes: GO to 9 . No: INSTALL new wiper blades. GO to 9 .
- RECHECK THE RAIN SENSITIVE WIPERS OPERATION Place the multifunction switch to the auto/ intermittent 5 setting (most sensitive to moisture) while applying water on the windshield above the rain sensor. Do the wipers operate when water is applied to the windshield surface? Yes: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor wipe quality on the windshield around the rain sensor. No: GO to 10 .
- CHECK FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE LENS GEL Ignition OFF. Lightly press the rain sensor against the windshield and release the rain sensor clips. Does the rain sensor remain adhered to the windshield? Yes: ATTACH the retaining clips. GO to 11 . No: The sensor gel-type lens is missing or damaged. INSTALL a new rain sensor. REFER to «Rain Sensor»(ref-517620-S29971154172012121200000) .
- INSPECT THE RAIN SENSOR MOUNTING AREA From the outside of the vehicle, inspect the area of the windshield glass where the rain sensor is mounted. The rain sensor contact area should appear black, with no bubbles, air pockets or contaminants between the windshield glass and the rain sensor. Does the rain sensor contact area appear black, with no bubbles, air pockets or contaminants between the windshield glass and the rain sensor? Yes: ATTACH the retaining clips. GO to 12 . No: REMOVE and INSTALL the rain sensor correctly. REFER to «Rain Sensor»(ref-517620-S29971154172012121200000) . TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to 15 .
- CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Rain Sensor. Ignition ON. Measure: Rain Sensor Ground C914 Chassis Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 1 CBB45 (YE) - - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to 13 . No: VERIFY BJB fuse 45 (5A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate «OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-514995) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Measure: Rain Sensor Ground C914 Chassis Ground Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 3 GD233 (BK) - - Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: GO to 14 . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK THE LIN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: SCCM C2414A. Measure: Rain Sensor SCCM C914 C2414A Pin Circuit Measurement Pin Circuit 2 VDN05 (YE/GY) 20 VDN05 (YE/GY) Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: GO to 15 . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK THE RAIN SENSOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION Connect: Windshield Wiper Motor. Inspect the rain sensor connector. Repair: corrosion (replace connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary Reconnect the rain sensor connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Ignition ON. Turn the wiper/washer switch to the auto/intermittent 5 position (most sensitive to moisture) while applying water to the windshield surface. Observe the wiper operation. Do the wipers operate when water is applied to the windshield surface? Yes: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues. No: CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new rain sensor.
