Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION CHART Mechanical Electrical Rear bumper height and alignment Central junction box (CJB) fuse 18 (10A) Circuitry Parking aid module Parking aid sensors Parking aid speaker Parking aid switch Reversing lamps system
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: Check the VCM connection to the vehicle. Check the scan tool connection to the VCM. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-270934) , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Verify the ignition key is in the ON position. Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-270934) to diagnose no response from the powertrain control module (PCM).
  7. Carry out the network test: If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-270934) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the parking aid module.
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Parking Aid Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. For all other DTCs, refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-270935) .
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to «Symptom Chart»(ref-270967-S23400490982007111500000) .

Pinpoint Test B: DTC B1318 - Battery Voltage Low

CAUTIONUse the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

  1. B1 CHECK THE PARKING AID MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Parking Aid Module C4414 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the parking aid module C4414-18, circuit CBP18 (GY/OG), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to B2 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. B2 CHECK THE PARKING AID MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT Key in OFF position. Measure the resistance between the parking aid module C4414-6, circuit GD145 (BK/BU), harness side and ground. Is resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-270936) to diagnose the low battery voltage concern. NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

Pinpoint Test C: DTC C1742 - Rear Sounder Circuit Failure and DTC C1743 - Rear Sounder Circuit Short To Vbatt

  1. C1 CHECK CIRCUIT CMP09 (BN/BU) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Parking Aid Module C4414 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the parking module C4414-15, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and ground. Is any voltage indicated? YES : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to C2 .
  2. C2 CHECK CIRCUIT CMP09 (BN/BU) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Parking Aid Speaker C4015 Measure the resistance between the parking aid module C4414-15, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to C3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. C3 CHECK CIRCUIT CMP09 (BN/BU) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between the parking aid module C4414-15, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and the parking aid speaker C4015-2, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to C4 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. C4 CHECK CIRCUIT RMP09 (BU/GN) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Parking Aid Speaker C4015 Measure the resistance between the parking aid module C4414-13, circuit RMP09 (BU/GN), harness side and the parking aid speaker C4015-1, circuit RMP09 (BU/GN), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to C5 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. C5 CHECK THE PARKING AID SPEAKER Connect: Parking Aid Module C4414 Install a known good parking aid speaker, clear the DTCs and repeat the on-demand self-test. Is DTC C1742 or C1743 still present? YES : INSTALL the original parking aid speaker. Go to C6 . NO : INSTALL a new parking aid speaker. REFER to «Parking Aid Speaker - Explorer»(ref-270967-S16357540742007110700000) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. C6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Explorer»(ref-270967-S39191467972007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

PINPOINT TEST D: DTC U2471 - UNEXPECTED PRNDL STATE

  1. D1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Key in ON position. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Parking Aid Module Self-Test Clear the DTCs. Repeat the parking aid module on-demand self-test. Are any DTCs present? YES : If DTC U2471 and U0155 are both present, REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-270934) to diagnose no communication with the instrument cluster. For DTC U2471 only, go to D2 . NO : System is operating normally at this time.
  2. D2 VERIFY THE REVERSING LAMPS FUNCTION PROPERLY Move the gearshift lever through the range of positions. Do the reversing lamps operate with the gearshift lever in REVERSE (R)? YES : Go to D3 . NO : REFER to «EXTERIOR LIGHTING»(ref-270923) .
  3. D3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION Disconnect the instrument cluster connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(ref-270940) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

Pinpoint Test E: DTC U2472 - Unexpected Ignition State

Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.

  1. E1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE PARKING AID MODULE ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Key in ON position. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Parking Aid Module Self-Test Clear the DTCs. Repeat the parking aid module on-demand self-test. Is DTC U2472 present? YES : Go to E2 . NO : System is operating normally at this time.
  2. E2 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE SJB ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: SJB Self-Test Carry out the SJB self-test. Is DTC B1359, B1363 and/or B1555 recorded? YES : REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-270945) . NO : Go to E3 .
  3. E3 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-270935) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

PINPOINT TEST F: DTC U2473 - UNEXPECTED VEHICLE SPEED

  1. F1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE PARKING AID MODULE ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the parking aid module on-demand self-test. Are any DTCs present? YES : Go to F2 . NO : System is operating normally at this time.
  2. F2 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE PARKING AID MODULE ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Verify the parking aid module DTCs. Are both DTCs U2473 and U0155 recorded? YES : REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-270934) . NO : Go to F3 .
  3. F3 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Record DTCs from the powertrain control module self-test. Are any DTCs recorded? YES : REFER to the «Introduction - Gasoline Engines»(ref-268480) . NO : Go to F4 .
  4. F4 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST Record DTCs from the instrument cluster self-test. Are any DTCs recorded? YES : REFER to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(ref-270940) . NO : Go to F5 .
  5. F5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION Disconnect the instrument cluster connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(ref-270940) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

PINPOINT TEST G: CONTINUOUS OR INTERMITTENT TONE WHEN NO OBSTACLES OR FAULT CODES ARE PRESENT

  1. G1 CARRY OUT REAR BUMPER COVER VISUAL INSPECTION Visually inspect the rear bumper or bumper cover for any of the following conditions: Dirty or iced over rear bumper cover Rear bumper cover impact damage Rear bumper height or alignment incorrect Rear bumper cover aftermarket add-ons present including but not limited to trailer hitches, emblems, and metallic stickers Are any of the above conditions present? YES : REMOVE the aftermarket equipment or REPAIR the rear bumper cover damage as necessary. NO : Go to G2 .
  2. G2 CARRY OUT THE AZIMUTH AND ELEVATION SYSTEM CHECKS Carry out the azimuth and elevation checks. Refer to «Azimuth System Check»(ref-270967-S09516824632007110700000) and «Elevation System Check»(ref-270967-S27663266822007110700000) . Does the parking aid system pass both system checks? YES : The system is operating correctly at this time. NO : Go to G3 .
  3. G3 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Explorer»(ref-270967-S39191467972007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Pinpoint Test J: DTCs C1699, C1702, C1705 And C1708 - Sensor Circuit Short To Vbat

Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS , Parking Aid for schematic and connector information.

  1. J1 RETRIEVE THE DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PARKING AID MODULE SELF-TESTS Check the parking aid module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are multiple DTCs recorded? YES : Go to J2 . NO : For DTCs C1699, C1702, C1705 or C1708, go to J3 . For all other DTCs, REFER to «PARKING AID MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART»(ref-270967-S07065986492007111500000) .
  2. J2 CHECK THE BUMPER WIRING HARNESS Inspect the bumper wiring harness for opens, shorts, grounds, or corrosion. Is bumper wiring harness OK? YES : Go to J3 . NO : REPAIR or INSTALL a new bumper wiring harness. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. J3 CHECK THE SENSOR CIRCUITRY FOR SHORTS TO VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Suspect Parking Aid Sensor C4009, C4010, C4011 and C4012 Disconnect: Parking Aid Module C4014 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the suspect parking aid sensor, harness side and ground as follows: DTC Rear Sensor Connector-Pin Circuit C1699 LH outer C4009-2 VMP15 (YE/GN) C1702 RH outer C4011-2 VMP17 (YE/OG) C1705 LH inner C4010-2 VMP14 (WH/OG) C1708 RH inner C4012-2 VMP16 (YE/GY) Is any voltage present? YES : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to J4 .
  4. J4 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSORS Install a known good parking aid sensor(s) for each of the suspect parking aid sensor(s). Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test. Test the system for normal operation. Is the concern still present? YES : If all of the parking aid sensors recorded DTCs prior, go to J5 . If one or more parking aid sensor(s) recorded DTCs, INSTALL a new sensor(s) for the one in question. REFER to «Parking Aid Sensor - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S25351592102007110700000) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. J5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S36451289582007110700000) . PINPOINT TEST K: DTCs C1701, C1704, C1707 AND C1710 - SENSOR CIRCUIT FAULT

  1. K1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PARKING AID MODULE SELF-TESTS Check the parking aid module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are parking aid DTCs other than C1701, C1704, C1707 or C1710 recorded? YES : DIAGNOSE the other DTCs first. REFER to «PARKING AID MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHART»(ref-270967-S07065986492007111500000) . NO : Go to K2 .
  2. K2 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSOR OPERATION NOTE: Make sure the area around the vehicle is clear of anything that might activate the parking aid system. Clean the rear bumper and sensors with high-pressure water. Carry out the azimuth system check. Refer to «Azimuth System Check»(ref-270967-S09516824632007110700000) . Carry out the elevation system check. Refer to «Elevation System Check»(ref-270967-S27663266822007110700000) . Does the parking aid system pass both system checks? YES : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a dirty or blocked parking aid sensor. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to K3 .
  3. K3 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSOR DISTANCE PIDs Make sure the suspect parking aid sensor(s) is flush-mounted in the bezel. Key in ON position. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Parking Aid PID With the brake pedal applied, shift the transmission into REVERSE (R) and monitor the parking aid sensor distance PID. The PID will read 255 cm (100 in) on a correctly functioning sensor. Does the PID read 255 cm (100 in)? YES : Go to K4 . NO : Go to K5 .
  4. K4 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSOR ATTENUATION PIDs Check the parking aid sensor attenuation PIDs. Do the attenuation PIDs read between 0 and 16? YES : Go to K6 . NO : Go to K5 .
  5. K5 INSTALL A KNOWN GOOD SENSOR Install a known good sensor for the suspect parking aid sensor. Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : Go to K6 . NO : INSTALL a new parking aid sensor. REFER to «Parking Aid Sensor - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S25351592102007110700000) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. K6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new parking aid module. REFER to «Parking Aid Module - Mountaineer, Explorer Sport Trac»(ref-270967-S36451289582007110700000) . REPEAT the self-test. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  1. L1 CHECK THE BUMPER WIRING HARNESS Inspect the bumper wiring harness for opens, shorts, grounds, or corrosion. Is the bumper wiring harness OK? YES : Go to L2 . NO : REPAIR or INSTALL a new bumper wiring harness. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. L2 CHECK THE LH OUTER SENSOR FOR AN INTERNAL SHORT Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Parking Aid Sensor C4009 Key in ON position. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the on-demand self-test.   6. L7 CHECK CIRCUIT LMP07 (BU/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Parking Aid Module C4014 Measure the resistance between the parking aid module C4014-9, circuit LMP07 (BU/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to L7 . NO : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. L6 CHECK CIRCUIT LMP07 (BU/WH) FOR A SHORT TO CIRCUIT RMP07 (GN/WH) Key in OFF position. Measure the resistance between the parking aid module C4014-9, circuit LMP07 (BU/WH), harness side and the parking aid module C4014-12, circuit RMP07 (GN/WH). Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to L8 . NO : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. L8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector.   1. M1 USE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM THE PARKING AID MODULE SELF-TEST Use the recorded results from the parking aid module self-test. Is DTC C1742 or C1743 recorded? YES : Go to M2 . NO : All other DTCs, go to the Parking Aid Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. If no DTCs are recorded, go to «Pinpoint Test H»(ref-270967-S14461981972007110700000) .
  2. M2 MEASURE THE PARKING AID SPEAKER RESISTANCE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Parking Aid Speaker C4015 Measure the resistance between the parking aid speaker pin 1, component side and the parking aid speaker pin 2, component side. Is the resistance between 40 and 60 ohms? YES : If DTC C1742 was recorded, go to M3 . If DTC C1743 was recorded, go to M7 . NO : INSTALL a new parking aid speaker.   3. M3 CHECK CIRCUIT CMP09 (BN/BU) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Connect: Parking Aid Speaker C4015 Disconnect: Parking Aid Module C4014 Measure the resistance between the parking aid module, C4014-2, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to M5 . NO : Go to M4 .
  4. M4 CHECK CIRCUIT CMP09 (BN/BU) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE PARKING AID SPEAKER DISCONNECTED Disconnect: Parking Aid Speaker C4015 Measure the resistance between the parking aid module, C4014-2, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : REPAIR circuit RMP09 (BU/GN). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : REPAIR circuit CMP09 (BN/BU). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. M5 CHECK CIRCUIT CMP09 (BN/BU) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Parking Aid Speaker C4015 Measure the resistance between the parking aid speaker C4015-2, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and the parking aid module C4014-2, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to M6 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. M6 CHECK CIRCUIT RMP09 (BU/GN) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between the parking aid speaker C4015-1, circuit 1438 (DG), harness side and the parking aid module C4014-6, circuit 1438 (DG), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to M8 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. M7 CHECK CIRCUITS CMP09 (BN/BU) AND RMP09 (BU/GN) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Disconnect: Parking Aid Module C4014 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the parking aid module, C4014-2, circuit CMP09 (BN/BU), harness side and ground; and between the parking aid module, C4014-6, circuit RMP09 (BU/GN), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? YES : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to M8 .
  8. M8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PARKING AID MODULE OPERATION Disconnect the parking aid module connector. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the parking aid module connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Note. The object used in this system check can be fabricated from 9 cm O.D. (3 in I.D) plastic pipe 100 cm (39 in) in length (available as PVC pipe, or similar from a hardware or plumbing supply).

Note. The following system check should be carried out with the vehicle on a level surface. The specified object locations are approximate, not absolute

Note. The parking aid system will default to on when the ignition key is cycled from OFF to ON.

Note. The scan tool may be used to monitor distance PIDs (Explorer Sport Trac and Mountaineer only). The distance PIDs read between 0 and 255 cm (0 and 8 ft) on a correctly functioning system.

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position, engine off.
  2. Set the parking brake on.
  3. Place the gear shift in REVERSE (R).
  4. Verify that the parking aid system detects the specified object when placed within the 5 specified locations (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5). The pipe should be inside of these locations. The speaker should beep slowly when objects are detected on the outer edges of the detection zone, and increase as the object is moved closer to the vehicle. When the object is within 46 cm (18 in) of the rear bumper, the sounder should be on continuously.
