Principles of Operation - Power Seats Without Memory

The six-way power seat feature moves the seat in six possible directions: the base of the seat can be moved forward or backward and the front and back of the base cushion can be moved up and down independently. The power seat feature operates independent of the position of the ignition.

The power seat motors are hardwired to the seat control switch. The circuits are normally at ground through the seat control switch. An individual circuit is switched to power when a specific adjustment position is selected.

Principles of Operation - Heated Seats

The driver and passenger heated seats share a common battery and ignition feed. A shared ground source supplies the heated seat control switch. When the heated seat control switch is pressed with the ignition switch in RUN or START, a momentary ground signal is sent to the heated seat module. The heated seat module then supplies power to the heating element circuit. The cushion element and seat backrest element are wired in series and powered by the same output. The heated seat module will supply voltage to a separate indicator circuit to the dual automatic temperature control (DATC) module display panel to indicate an ON state. The heated seat module will remain on until the heated seat control switch is pressed and a momentary voltage signal is received, or until 10 minutes expire. If the ignition source is removed from the module, the heated seat module will enter an OFF state and will not return to ON until the switch is once again pressed with the ignition switch in RUN. The heated seat module is designed to heat the seat to 37.5°C (99.5°F) and maintain the temperature until time-out or until switched off. This temperature is maintained by the heated seat module monitoring the temperature sensor, located in the seat cushion element, and adjusting the current flow to the heating elements.

Normal Operation

The power seat switch is powered by battery voltage to driver seat control switch circuit 490 (RD) or (passenger circuit 1462 ) and is supplied ground on circuit 1205 (BK).

The power seat should move quietly during operation. Some noise is acceptable.

The power seat movement should be smooth and the seat cushion should not rock during or after operation.

The power seat should travel fully horizontal (forward/rearward) and vertical (front up/down and rear up/down).

The power seat switch is powered by battery voltage on driver circuit 490 (RD) or (passenger circuit 1462 ) and is supplied ground on circuit 1205 (BK). When pressed, the power seat switch supplies that voltage and ground to a power seat track motor to move the seat. When pressed in the opposite direction, the power seat switch reverses the polarity to that same power seat track motor, which moves the seat in the opposite direction. There are three power seat track motors that combine to move the seat horizontally (forward/reverse) and vertically (front up/down and rear up/down).

The driver power seat switch is powered by battery voltage on circuit 490 (RD) and is supplied ground on circuit 1205 (BK). When pressed, the power seat switch supplies the voltage and ground to the driver seat module (DSM). The DSM then supplies voltage and ground to the appropriate power seat track motor based on the inputs received from the seat control switch. When pressed in the opposite direction, the power seat switch reverses the polarity to the DSM, which moves the seat in the opposite direction. There are three power seat track motors that combine to move the seat horizontally (forward/reverse) and vertically (front up/down and rear up/down).

The following pinpoint test diagnoses a memory seat that does not operate in one or more directions when using the power seat switch. If the memory seat moves in all directions using the power seat switch, GO to PINPOINT TEST G: THE MEMORY SEAT DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY - DOES NOT OPERATE USING THE MEMORY SET SWITCH .

The driver power seat switch is powered by battery voltage on circuit 490 (RD) and is supplied ground on circuit 1205 (BK). When pressed, the power seat switch supplies the voltage and ground to the driver seat module (DSM). The DSM then supplies voltage and ground to the appropriate power seat track motor based on the inputs received from the seat control switch. When pressed in the opposite direction, the power seat switch reverses the polarity to the DSM, which moves the seat in the opposite direction. There are three power seat track motors that combine to move the seat horizontally (forward/reverse) and vertically (front up/down and rear up/down).

Each power seat track motor includes a position sensor, which is a potentiometer. The DSM supplies a shared reference voltage and ground to each position sensor. This enables the position sensor to send a variable voltage back to the DSM to indicate the position of the power seat track motor. The DSM uses this information to return the seat to a stored preprogrammed position when pressing the memory set switch or a remote transmitter. Refer to Seats and the owner's literature for additional information on programming the DSM for storing memory seat and adjustable pedal positions.

The following pinpoint test diagnoses a memory seat that does not operate correctly using the memory set switch. If the memory seat does not move in all directions using the power seat switch, GO to PINPOINT TEST F: THE MEMORY SEAT IS INOPERATIVE .
