REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
  1. Remove the drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES. Support the transmission with a suitable jack. Remove the rear transmission support insulator.
  2. If equipped, remove transfer case. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in TRANSFER CASES.
  3. Remove extension housing screws, housing and gasket. (Scheme 1)- (Scheme 3).
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  5. Fill the transmission with clean automatic transmission fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-155744-S26036337682003062400000) and «FLUID CAPACITIES»(ref-155744-S36909778852003062400000) under LUBRICATION.

  1. Remove the drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  2. If equipped, remove transfer case.
  3. Using the Torque Converter Fluid Seal Remover (307-309; 2WD vehicles) or Input Shaft Oil Seal Remover (308-375; 4WD vehicles) and Slide Hammer (100-001), remove the extension housing seal. (Scheme 4)and (Scheme 5).
  4. To install, make sure the extension housing seal is correctly installed onto the special tool and the garter spring is in the correct position. Using the Transmission Extension Housing Oil Seal Installer (308-002; 2WD vehicles) or Transmission Extension Housing Fluid Seal Installer (307-435; 4WD vehicles), install the extension housing seal. (Scheme 6)
  5. Carry out the transmission fluid level check. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-155744-S42912613492003062400000) under LUBRICATION.

  1. On 4WD vehicles, remove the front drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES. For 2WD vehicles, with the vehicle in Park, position on a hoist.
  2. Disconnect speed sensor electrical connector. (Scheme 7) Remove speed sensor screw and sensor. Inspect sensor "O" ring.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedures. (Scheme 7) Tighten screws and sensors to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).

  1. With the vehicle in Park, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove selector lever dash cover. (Scheme 8) Remove selector lever cable eyelet.
  3. Remove selector lever cable retainer. (Scheme 8) Remove selector lever cable grommet. Push the cable grommet through the floor pan.
  4. Remove selector lever cable eyelet. (Scheme 8) Remove selector level cable retaining clip.
  5. Remove selector lever cable retainer. (Scheme 8) Remove selector lever cable.
  6. Remove selector lever cable bracket screws. (Scheme 8) Remove selector lever cable bracket.
  7. To install, reverse removal procedures. (Scheme 8) Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000). Adjust the shift cable. See «SHIFT CABLE»(ref-155744-S39169147052003062400000) under ADJUSTMENTS. NOTE: Make sure that the shift cable retaining clip is securely seated against the cable adjuster. The cable grommet must be seated up against the floor pan tightly or water may enter the passenger compartment.

Removal

  1. With the vehicle in Park, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove fluid pan drain plug. Remove solenoid body harness electrical connector.
  3. Remove fluid pan screws. see scheme 9 Remove fluid pan. Remove fluid pan gasket. NOTE: When installing fluid pan, tighten screws in a crisscross pattern.
  4. Remove fluid pan filter screws. see scheme 10 Remove fluid pan filter.
  5. Remove solenoid body screws. Remove solenoid body. (Scheme 9) Remove solenoid body "O" ring seals.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. see scheme 9 Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000). Fill the transmission with clean automatic transmission fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-155744-S26036337682003062400000) under LUBRICATION.
  7. Install NEW "O" ring seals on the solenoid body connector. (Scheme 9) Lubricate the "O" ring seals with clean automatic transmission fluid.
  8. Inspect the transmission case bore to make sure it is free of foreign material and not damaged. If damaged, a transmission leak may occur. Install the solenoid body. Tighten the screws in the sequence shown to specification. (Scheme 10) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).

  1. On 4WD vehicles, remove the front drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES. On 4WD vehicles, with the vehicle in Neutral, position on a hoist. It is not necessary to remove the shift cable and bracket from the transmission.
  2. Move the rubber boot back to gain access to the connector. Remove TR sensor electrical connector. see scheme 14 Remove TR selector lever cable eyelet. (Scheme 11)
  3. Remove manual control lever nut. (Scheme 11) Remove manual control lever.
  4. Remove TR sensor screws. (Scheme 11) Remove TR sensor.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. (Scheme 11) Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).

CAUTIONLubricate the fluid filter seals with clean automatic transmission fluid or they may be damaged. Make sure that the fluid filter seals are correctly seated on the filter. Clean the area around the connector to prevent contamination of the solenoid body connector.

Note. The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable. Clean and inspect for damage. If not damaged, the gasket should be reused.

  1. Shift vehicle to Park. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove fluid pan drain plug. (Scheme 12) Remove solenoid body harness electrical connector.
  3. Remove fluid pan screws. (Scheme 12) Remove fluid pan. Remove fluid pan gasket.
  4. Remove fluid pan filter screws. (Scheme 12) Remove fluid pan filter.
  5. Remove solenoid body screws. (Scheme 12) Remove solenoid body.
  6. Remove solenoid body "O" ring seals. (Scheme 12) Remove reverse servo screws. Remove reverse servo.
  7. Remove manual control valve detent spring screw. (Scheme 12) Remove manual control valve detent spring.
  8. Remove main control valve body screws. (Scheme 12) Remove main control valve body.

Installation

  1. Install the Valve Body Aligner (307-334) into the transmission case. (Scheme 13) Using the valve body aligners, install the main control valve body and loosely install the screws. Install the short screw. Install the screw with the larger head. Install the remaining screws.
  2. Remove the valve body aligners, and loosely install the screw. Tighten the screws in the sequence shown to specification. (Scheme 14) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  3. Install manual control valve detent spring screw and spring. (Scheme 12) Tighten screw to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  4. Install the reverse servo. (Scheme 15) Tighten the screws in the sequence shown to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  5. Install NEW "O" ring seals on the solenoid body connector. (Scheme 9) Lubricate the "O" ring seals with clean automatic transmission fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-155744-S26036337682003062400000).
  6. Inspect the transmission case bore to make sure it is free of foreign material and not damaged. If it is damaged, a transmission leak may occur. Install the solenoid body. Tighten the screws in sequence shown to specification. (Scheme 10) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  7. Lubricate the fluid filter seals with clean automatic transmission fluid or they may be damaged. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-155744-S26036337682003062400000). Make sure that the fluid filter seals are correctly seated on the filter. Install the transmission fluid filter. (Scheme 12)
  8. Install fluid pan gasket and fluid pan filter screws. (Scheme 12) Tighten screws to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  9. Install the transmission fluid pan and loosely install the screws. (Scheme 12) Tighten screws to specification in a crisscross pattern. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  10. Install and lubricate NEW "O" ring seals on the transmission connector and connect the connector. (Scheme 12) Tighten connector to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  11. Install transmission fluid pan drain plug. (Scheme 12) Tighten plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000).
  12. Lower vehicle and fill transmission with appropriate fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-155744-S26036337682003062400000) under LUBRICATION.
