ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS
Various components may be serviced without transmission removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
SHIFT CABLE
- Place the transmission range selector lever in the first position all the way toward the rear of the vehicle. Move the transmission range selector lever forward three detents. This should be the "D" position. Position the vehicle on a hoist. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever. (Scheme 26)
- Rotate the manual lever forward until the travel stops. Then rotate the manual lever back three detents to the "D" position. (Scheme 27) The tab will need to be pried up to unlock the shift cable. Using a suitable tool, unlock tab on the shift cable. (Scheme 28) With the cable unlocked, make sure the cable slides forward and backward.
- Make sure that the shift cable slides forward and backward. Connect the shift cable to the manual control lever, making sure not to move the lever. Move the cable to match the position of the manual lever. Press the shift cable adjustment lock downward to the lock position.
- Lower the vehicle. Verify that the engine will start in Park and Neutral. Verify that the reverse lamps will illuminate in the Reverse position. TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR
- With the vehicle in the Neutral, position on a hoist. Move the rubber boot back to gain access to the connector. Disconnect the digital TR sensor connector. (Scheme 29)
- Remove the shift cable from the manual control lever. (Scheme 26) Remove the outer manual control lever. (Scheme 30) Loosen the screws. CAUTION: The digital transmission range sensor must fit flush against the boss on the case to prevent damage to the sensor.
- The manual lever must be in the Neutral position. Using the TR Sensor Alignment Gauge (307-351), align the digital TR sensor and tighten the screws in an alternating sequence. (Scheme 31) Tighten screws to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000). CAUTION: Tightening one screw before tightening the other may cause the sensor to bind or become damaged.
- Install the outer manual lever. (Scheme 30) Tighten bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155744-S21902015262003062400000). Install the shift cable to the manual control lever. (Scheme 26) Reconnect the digital TR sensor connector. (Scheme 29) Move the rubber boot back over the connector.
- Verify that the shift cable is adjusted correctly. See «SHIFT CABLE»(ref-155744-S39169147052003062400000). Lower the vehicle. Verify that the vehicle will start in Park and Neutral, and that the reverse lamps illuminate in Reverse.
