REMOTE TRANSMITTER

Note. For additional information on remote transmitter programming and trouble shooting, see REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE TIPS bulletin (Ford Bulletin No. 97-24-13) in TSB.

Note. A maximum of 4 transmitters can be programmed for each Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module. Programming must be done at the same time for all transmitters.

To program (or re-program) transmitter(s) into the remote/keyless entry module, perform the following steps

  1. Verify battery is fully charged and anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (if equipped). Turn ignition switch from OFF to RUN positions or from OFF to ACC positions 8 times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN or ACC position. All doors should lock then unlock to confirm that program mode has been entered.
  2. Press any button on transmitter. All doors will lock and unlock to verify remote transmitter has been programmed. Repeat this step to program additional transmitters. When finished programming all transmitters, turn ignition off. All doors should lock then unlock to confirm completion of programming. Check operation.

Note. If system will not program, go to SYSTEM TESTS .

PRELIMINARY PROCEDURE

  1. Verify customers complaint by operating keyless entry system. Check for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. Check for blown fuse(s), loose or corroded connectors, or damaged wiring harness. Repair or replace components as necessary. Also see «TROUBLE SHOOTING»(ref-29378-S31576342292001010800000) .
  2. If all components are okay, connect NGS tester to DLC located below instrument panel. Using NGS tester, perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If NGS tester displays CKT 914, CKT 915 or CKT 70=ALL MODULES NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose network concern. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), or Central Timer Module (CTM), perform «TEST I: NO COMMUNICATION WITH GEM/CTM MODULE»(ref-29378-S08091468972001010800000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) Module, perform «TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH RAP MODULE»(ref-29378-S20470869382001010800000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. If NGS tester displays SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Perform self-test diagnostics for GEM/CTM and RAP module using NGS tester. If GEM/CTM DTCs are retrieved, see «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE»(ref-29378-S02464214192001010800000) (GEM)/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM) DTC DEFINITIONS table to continue diagnosis. If RAP module DTCs are retrieved, see «RAP MODULE DTC DEFINITIONS»(ref-29378-S36460687232001010800000) table to continue diagnosis. If no DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test under «SYSTEM TESTS»(ref-29378-S18092638532001010800000) .

SYSTEM TESTS

Note. Keep driver's window rolled down when performing tests to avoid getting locked out of vehicle.

Note. Before beginning any testing, ensure battery is fully charged. Lubricate door lock latch and linkage system. Manually cycle door locks 10 times to ensure proper operation. After repair is completed, always clear any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that exist and recheck system for proper operation.

SYMPTOM CHART

Scheme 3

Scheme 3: TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH RAP MODULE
  1. Turn ignition off. Check fuse No. 20 (7.5-amp) in instrument panel fuse block and fuse No. 9 (20-amp) in engine compartment power distribution box. If fuses are okay, go to next step. Replace fuse(s) if necessary. If fuse(s) fail again, check for short in Black/Pink or White/Blue wire(s), then retest system.
  2. Disconnect RAP module 22-pin connector C338. Measure voltage between ground and RAP module 22-pin connector C338 terminal No. 12 (White/Blue wire). (Scheme 3) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in White/Light Blue wire, then retest system.
  3. Disconnect RAP module 26-pin connector C336. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and RAP module 26-pin connector C336 terminal No. 25 (Black/Pink wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in Black/Pink wire, then retest system.
  4. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and RAP module 26-pin connector C336 terminal No. 25 (Black/White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article for further diagnosis. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open Black/White wire, then retest system.

ALL LOCK RELAY, ALL UNLOCK RELAY & DOOR UNLOCK RELAY

  1. Remove applicable relay from instrument panel fuse/relay block. Measure resistance between relay terminal No. 85 and all other terminals. (Scheme 4) If resistance is 5 ohms or less between relay terminal No. 85 and any other terminal, replace relay. If all resistances are more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Using 2 jumper wires, connect one jumper between positive battery terminal and relay terminal No. 86. Connect another jumper wire between positive battery terminal and relay terminal No. 30. Measure voltage between ground and relay terminal No. 87A. If battery voltage is not present, replace relay. If battery voltage is present, use third jumper wire and ground terminal No. 85. Check for voltage at terminal No. 87. If battery voltage is not present, replace relay, If battery voltage is present, relay is okay.
