TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Fuel Charging and Controls

The fuel charging and control system consists of the

  1. Electronic throttle body (TB)
  2. Fuel supply tube
  3. Fuel rails
  4. Fuel injectors
  5. Fuel pressure and temperature sensor

The fuel charging and controls system is

  1. a sequential, multi-port fuel injection (SFI) system.
  2. pulse-width modulated (PWM).
  3. mass air flow (MAF) controlled.

Throttle Body

CAUTIONDo not hold the throttle plate open with any object that could scratch the bore or plate while servicing or cleaning the throttle body (TB), or the TB may be damaged. For additional information, refer to Throttle Body .

The electronic TB

  1. controls air supply to the intake manifold by electronically positioning the throttle plate.
  2. is not adjustable.
  3. must be removed from the vehicle to be cleaned. Refer to «Throttle Body»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/ii-2006-2010/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-and-engine-controls-40l-sohc) .

Fuel Supply Tube

The fuel supply tube

  1. supplies fuel to the 2 fuel rails.

Fuel Rails

The fuel rails

  1. deliver fuel to the individual fuel injectors.

Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors

  1. are electrically operated by the PCM.
  2. atomize the fuel as the fuel is delivered.
  3. are deposit-resistant and self-cleaning.
  4. each have an internal solenoid which opens a needle valve to inject fuel into the cylinder heads.

Fuel Pressure and Temperature Sensor

The fuel pressure and temperature sensor

  1. supplies the PCM with signals indicating fuel pressure and fuel temperature.

Refer to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

WARNINGDo not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or have an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
CAUTIONThe throttle body (TB) must be removed from the vehicle to be cleaned. Do not hold the throttle plate open with any object that could scratch the bore or plate while servicing or cleaning the TB, or the TB may be damaged.
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/ii-2006-2010/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-and-filtering-system) article.
  2. Disconnect the electronic throttle body (TB) electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the nut and position the wiring harness bracket aside. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  5. Remove the bolts, the electronic TB and the gasket. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new electronic TB gasket.

WARNINGDo not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or have an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNINGBefore working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, relieve the fuel system pressure to prevent accidental spraying of fuel. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure, even when the engine is not running. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
CAUTIONIf used as a leverage device, the fuel rail may be damaged. Care must be taken when working around the fuel rail.

Note. During the repair or replacement of fuel-related components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all liquid and vapor fuel openings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove all caps, tape and other protective materials prior to installation.

  1. Disconnect the spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/ii-2006-2010/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  2. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 4.0L SOHC»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/ii-2006-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-40l-sohc) article.
  3. Remove the fuel supply tube bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  4. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.
  5. Disconnect the fuel pressure and temperature sensor electrical and vacuum connectors.
  6. Remove the bolts and the fuel rail and injectors as an assembly. To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
