Scheme 1: TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The rear view mirrors consist of the following components

  1. Interior Rear View Mirror
  2. Auto Dimming Interior Mirror (If Equipped)
  3. Exterior Rear View Mirrors
  4. Exterior Rear View Mirror Motors
  5. Exterior Rear View Mirror Glass
  6. Exterior Rear View Mirrors With Ground Illumination Lamps
  7. Exterior Mirror Control Switch

On vehicles built after July of 2001, the exterior rear view mirror motor and glass is replaced separately. On vehicles built before July of 2001, the exterior rear view mirror is serviced as an assembly.

Scheme 3: Inspection & Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the exterior rear view mirrors.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the concern is not visually evident, determine the symptom. See «SYMPTOM CHART»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/mirrors/#rear-view-mirrors) .

Note. If the transmission range sensor is malfunctioning so that the backup lamps are on, the auto dimming interior mirror will not darken.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the front door trim panel.
  3. Remove the door speaker. Remove the screws. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the door speaker.
  4. Disconnect the exterior rear view mirror electrical connector.
  5. Remove the nuts and the exterior rear view mirror. Feed the power mirror wiring through the opening in the front door.

  1. Install the exterior rear view mirror. Feed the power mirror wiring through the opening in the front door. Position the exterior rear view mirror at the top of the slots and tighten in the sequence shown. (Scheme 21)
  2. Connect the exterior rear view mirror electrical connector.
  3. Install the door speaker. Connect the electrical connector. Position the door speaker in the door. Install the screws.
  4. Install the front door trim panel.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable.

EXTERIOR MIRROR MOTOR

Note. The exterior mirror motor is serviceable only on vehicles built after July of 2001.

  1. Remove the exterior mirror glass. For additional information, refer to «EXTERIOR MIRROR GLASS»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/mirrors/#rear-view-mirrors) .
  2. Position aside the exterior mirror motor (17D696). Remove the screws. Position aside the exterior mirror motor.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the exterior mirror motor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal

Note. Exterior mirror glass is serviceable only on vehicles built after July of 2001.

  1. Insert a long flat-bladed screwdriver in the notch.
  2. Push the screwdriver into the notch until the glass is released.

  1. Position the interior mirror on the windshield bracket.
  2. Using the special tool, press the interior mirror in place until fully seated.
