TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The instrument panel consists of the following components

  1. Ashtray (If Equipped With Base Console)
  2. Center Finish Panel
  3. Climate Control Head
  4. Instrument Cluster Finish Panel
  5. Glove Compartment
  6. Instrument Cluster
  7. Instrument Panel Defroster Opening Grille
  8. Instrument Panel Fuse Panel Door
  9. Instrument Panel Steering Column Cover
  10. Instrument Panel Steering Column Opening Cover Reinforcement
  11. Passenger Air Bag Module
  12. Power Point (If Equipped With Base Console)

CONSOLE - OVERHEAD

The overhead console consists of the following components

  1. Compass/Thermometer Display
  2. Garage Door Opener Storage (Without Roof Opening Panel)
  3. Map/Courtesy Lamps
  4. Map/Courtesy Lamp Switch
  5. Roof Opening Panel Control Switch (With Roof Opening Panel)

CONSOLE - FLOOR

The high series floor console consists of the following components

  1. Armrest
  2. Ashcup
  3. Bin Mat
  4. Console Finish Panel
  5. Coin Holder
  6. Power Point
  7. Cup Holder Insert
  8. Storage Compartment
  9. Rear Cup Holders
  10. Rear Integrated Control Panel

The base floor console consists of the following components

  1. Arm Rest
  2. Carry Bag
  3. Front Cup Holders
  4. Rear Cup Holders

If the vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, there will be a consolette at the base of the gearshift lever. The consolette contains two cupholders, covers the restraint control module (RCM) and is attached by two screws.

  1. Remove the driver-side air bag module. For additional information, refer to «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems) .
  2. Remove the screws and position the parking brake release handle aside.
  3. Remove the screws and position the hood release handle aside.
  4. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. Remove the screws. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
  5. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. Remove the bolts. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement.
  6. If equipped, disconnect the shift cable from the steering column. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.
  7. Disconnect the upper intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft. Remove and discard the steering column shaft pinch bolt. Slide the intermediate shaft yoke from the steering column shaft.
  8. Disconnect the brake pedal position (BPP) switch electrical connector.
  9. If equipped, disconnect the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch electrical connector.
  10. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the ground wires on the passenger side cowl panel.
  12. Disconnect the battery junction box (BJB) from the bracket and position aside.
  13. Disconnect the bulkhead wiring harness connectors from inside the engine compartment. Loosen the bolts. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  14. Remove the bulkhead connector insulator.
  15. Unclip the bulkhead electrical connectors from the dash panel.
  16. Remove the passenger-side air bag module. For additional information, refer to «PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems) .
  17. Disconnect the blend door actuator electrical connector.
  18. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  19. Disconnect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  20. Raise the glove compartment. Press the glove compartment release tabs inward while raising the glove compartment.
  21. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille.
  22. Remove the instrument panel cowl top bolts.
  23. On Vehicles With Automatic Transmission If equipped, remove the high series floor console. For additional information, refer to «FLOOR CONSOLE - HIGH SERIES»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-console) .
  24. If equipped, remove the two screws and the restraint control module (RCM) cover.
  25. On Vehicles With Manual Transmission Remove the gearshift lever handle.
  26. Remove the screws and the manual transmission consolette.
  27. On All Vehicles Disconnect the RCM connector and remove the ground bolt.
  28. Remove the instrument panel brace bolt from under the steering column opening.
  29. Remove the two windshield side garnish mouldings.
  30. Remove the passenger side instrument panel cowl side bolt.
  31. Remove the instrument panel fuse panel door.
  32. Remove the driver side instrument panel cowl side bolts.
  33. Position the instrument panel away from the dash panel.
  34. Disconnect the instrument panel harness from the body harness. Loosen the bolt. Disconnect the harness.
  35. Remove the instrument panel. If necessary, transfer components to the new instrument panel.

Installation

  1. This step requires an assistant. Position the instrument panel.
  2. Connect the instrument panel harness to the body harness. Connect the harness. Tighten the bolt.
  3. Align and install the instrument panel.
  4. Install the driver side instrument panel cowl side bolts.
  5. Install the instrument panel fuse panel door.
  6. Install the passenger side instrument panel cowl side bolt.
  7. Install the two windshield side garnish mouldings.
  8. Install the instrument panel brace bolt from under the steering column opening.
  9. Connect the RCM connector and install the ground bolt.
  10. On Vehicles With Manual Transmission Position the manual transmission consolette and install the screws.
  11. Install the gearshift lever handle.
  12. On Vehicles With Automatic Transmission If equipped, position the RCM cover and install the two screws.
  13. If equipped, install the high series floor console. For additional information, refer to «FLOOR CONSOLE - HIGH SERIES»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-console) .
  14. On All Vehicles Install the instrument panel cowl top bolts.
  15. Install the instrument panel defroster opening grille.
  16. Lower the glove compartment. Press the glove compartment release tabs inward while pulling downward on the glove compartment.
  17. Connect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  18. Connect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  19. Connect the blend door actuator electrical connector.
  20. Install the passenger-side air bag module. For additional information, refer to «PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems) .
  21. Position the bulkhead electrical connector handle.
  22. Install the bulkhead connector insulator.
  23. Install the bulkhead wiring harness connectors. Connect the electrical connectors. Tighten the bolts.
  24. Install the battery junction box (BJB).
  25. Connect the electrical connectors and the ground wires at the passenger side cowl panel.
  26. Install the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  27. Connect the battery junction box (BJB) switch electrical connector.
  28. If equipped, connect the CPP switch electrical connector.
  29. Connect the upper intermediate steering shaft to the steering column shaft. Install the intermediate shaft yoke to the steering column. Install a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  30. If equipped, install the shift cable to the steering column. Connect the shift cable to the steering column bracket. Connect the shift cable to the steering column shift tube lever.
  31. Install the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. Position the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. Install the bolts.
  32. Install the instrument panel steering column cover. Position the instrument panel steering column cover. Install the screws.
  33. Position the hood release handle and install the screws.
  34. Position the parking brake release handle and install the screws.
  35. Install the driver-side air bag module. For additional information, refer to «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems) .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the floor console tray. Lift upward at the rear first.
  3. Disconnect the floor console electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the floor console front bolts.
  5. Remove the floor console center bolts.
  6. Remove the floor console.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the front seat center armrest. Remove the two covers. Remove the four bolts. Remove the armrest.
  2. Remove the utility tray beverage holder.
  3. Remove the floor console. Remove the screws. Remove the floor console.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped, open the garage door remote cover.
  3. If equipped, remove the screws.
  4. Remove the overhead console.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector (two connectors on vehicles equipped with a roof opening panel).
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
