Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION TABLE Mechanical Electrical Power column tilt switch Power column tilt motor Steering column Steering column shrouds Wiring, terminals or connectors Driver Seat Module (DSM)
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC). NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM : check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM . refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-364058) , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM .
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition is ON. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-364058) to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  7. Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-364058) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).
  8. Clear the CMDTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the DSM .
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to «DRIVER SEAT MODULE (DSM) DTC TABLE»(ref-364090-S22271111932010062700000) . For all other DTCs, refer to the Master DTC Table in «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-364059) .
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM TABLE»(ref-364090-S17302674422010062700000) .

Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Expedition), SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Expedition EL), SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Navigator) or SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Navigator L) for schematic and connector information.

Note. Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.

  1. C1 CHECK THE POWER TILT SWITCH TILT UP CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: DSM C341C. Disconnect: Power Tilt Switch C2250. Measure the resistance between power tilt switch C2250-2, circuit CPP14 (BN/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to C2 . No: REPAIR circuit CPP14 (BN/WH). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. C2 CHECK THE POWER TILT SWITCH TILT DOWN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between power tilt switch C2250-3, circuit CPP15 (YE/VT), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to C3 . No: REPAIR circuit CPP15 (YE/VT). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. C3 CHECK THE POWER TILT SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER Measure the resistance between power tilt switch C2250-3, circuit CPP15 (YE/VT), harness side and power tilt switch C2250-2, circuit CPP14 (BN/WH), harness side. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to C4 . No: REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. C4 CHECK THE POWER TILT SWITCH FOR A SHORT Measure the resistance between: power tilt switch C2250 pin-1 and pin-2, component side. power tilt switch C2250 pin-1 and pin-3, component side. power tilt switch C2250 pin-2 and pin-3, component side. Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to C5 . No: INSTALL a new power tilt switch. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. C5 CHECK THE DSM CONNECTORS Check DSM C341C for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. spread terminals. Make sure the connector is seated correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new DSM . REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-364059) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self test. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Pinpoint Test D: DTCs B2334 and B2335

Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Expedition), SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Expedition EL), SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Navigator) or SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS (Navigator L) for schematic and connector information.

  1. D1 CHECK THE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: DSM C341C. Disconnect: Power Tilt Motor C227. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between ground and: power tilt motor C227-4, circuit RPP06 (GN), harness side. power tilt motor C227-2, circuit VPP17 (VT/BN), harness side. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No: GO to D2 .
  2. D2 CHECK THE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure the resistance between ground and: power tilt motor C227-4, circuit RPP06 (GN), harness side. power tilt motor C227-2, circuit VPP17 (VT/BN), harness side. Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to D3 . No: REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. D3 CHECK THE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between DSM C341C, harness side and the power tilt motor C227, harness side as indicated in the following table below: RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION TABLE DSM Circuit Power Tilt Motor C341C-15 RPP06 (GN) C227-4 C341C-5 VPP17 (VT/BN) C227-2 Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to D4 . No: REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. D4 CHECK THE DSM CONNECTORS Check DSM C341C for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. spread terminals. Connect: DSM C341C. Make sure the connectors are seated correctly then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new DSM . REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-364059) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self test. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Scheme 14: Removal and Installation
  1. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-364075) .
  2. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
  3. Remove and discard the steering wheel bolt. To install, tighten the new bolt to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  4. Disconnect the steering wheel switches electrical connector from the clockspring.
  5. Remove the steering wheel while routing the wires from the clockspring through the steering wheel.
  6. Tape the clockspring center rotor to the outer housing to keep it from rotating.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
