Principles of Operation
The vehicle security module is on the universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART)-based protocol (UBP) communication network. To support several vehicle subsystems, the module permits intermodule and diagnostic tool communications.
The vehicle security module controls the power door lock system. The module monitors the door lock/unlock switch inputs from the interior door lock switches. When the module receives an unlock/lock command from any door lock control switch, the module will activate the door lock actuators. The module also controls the following remote lock/unlock features
- Remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter lock/unlock
- Panic alarm
- Keyless entry keypad

The vehicle security module controls the autolamp subsystem. The autolamp subsystem provides light - sensitive automatic on/off control of the headlamps and parking lamps. For additional information, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING .
The third row power-fold seat relays are also controlled by the vehicle security module. This allows the seats to be adjusted by pressing one of the third row power-fold seat switches. For additional information, refer to SEATING .

- Verify the customer concern.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Check that the program card is correctly installed. Check the connections to the vehicle. Check the ignition switch position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
- Carry out the data link diagnostics test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: ISO, SCP or UBP circuits fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-209944) . No response/not equipped for the vehicle security module, Go To «PINPOINT TEST A»(ref-209949-S42655608642005121200000) . System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the vehicle security module.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) DESCRIPTION»(ref-209949-S30589059102005121200000) table.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, refer to the appropriate article to continue diagnostics.

The driver seat module (DSM) is on the universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART)-based protocol (UBP) communication network. To support several vehicle subsystems, the module permits intermodule and diagnostic tool communications.
The DSM controls the memory power exterior mirrors. This feature allows the driver to program personalized mirror positions. Once the driver has stored a mirror position, the driver can recall the setting by pressing the corresponding memory switch or by using a programmed remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter. The memory driver seat feature allows the driver to program a personalized seat position that can be recalled using the memory switches or the RKE transmitter. For additional information, refer to SEATING .
The adjustable pedals are also controlled by the DSM. This system permits the adjustment of the brake and accelerator pedals using the adjustable pedal switch. For additional information, refer to BRAKE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .

- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, refer to the appropriate article to continue diagnostics.

- Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-209935) .
- Remove the pushpin and the RH interior kick panel.
- Remove the glove compartment. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-209958) .
- Disconnect the three vehicle security module electrical connectors.
- Remove the two screws and the vehicle security module.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
