INSPECTION & VERIFICATION
- Verify customer complaint by operating system in question. Inspect vehicle for any obvious electrical component wiring or connector damage. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check central junction box fuse No. 3 (20-amp) and fuses related to system in question.
- Inspect 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) pins for damage. (Scheme 1) DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. If pins are okay, go to next step. If pins are damaged, repair as necessary and proceed to next step.
- If problem is still present after performing inspection, connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to DLC. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu. If NGS tester does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed. Check NGS tester cable connections and ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. If NGS tester still does not communicate with vehicle, go to «TEST M: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO NGS TESTER»(ref-2309-S09829341482000031700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000).

DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
- Rotate dial on NGS tester to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK and press trigger. A test will be performed on the BUS (circuits No. 914 and 915) for the module communications network and the ISO 9141 communication link (circuit No. 70).
- If NGS tester displays SYSTEM PASSED, module communications networks are okay. Return to SYMPTOM TEST INDEX in article of system in question to continue diagnosis.
- If NGS tester does not display SYSTEM PASSED, perform the following as applicable: If no response from NGS tester, go to «TEST M: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO NGS TESTER»(ref-2309-S09829341482000031700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays CKT70, CKT914 and/or CKT915 = SOME ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, go to «SYMPTOM TEST INDEX»(ref-2309-S32081371252000031700000) table to continue diagnosis. If NGS tester displays CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, go to «TEST L: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS - ISO 9141 NETWORK»(ref-2309-S04770240122000031700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays CKT914 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, go to «TEST K: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS - SCP NETWORK»(ref-2309-S34149701962000031700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. RETRIEVING & CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Following manufacturers instructions to retrieve and clear codes for desired module. See appropriate table under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) DEFINITIONS for a listing of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and appropriate test procedure.
TEST A: 4-WHEEL ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (4WABS) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (4WABS) module Black 24-pin connector. (Scheme 2) Inspect 4WABS connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between 4WABS module connector terminal No. 5 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 4.
- Connect 4WABS module connector. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If 4WABS module responds to NGS tester, system is functioning properly. If 4WABS module does not respond to NGS tester, replace 4WABS module. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
- Disconnect and inspect both halves of bulkhead Gray 40-pin connector C160 located at left rear of engine compartment. (Scheme 3) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between DLC terminal No. 7 and bulkhead Gray connector C160 (female half) terminal No. 29. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between male half of bulkhead Gray connector C160 and 4WABS module connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between DLC and female half of bulkhead Gray connector C160.

TEST B: REMOTE ANTI-THEFT PERSONALITY (RAP) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module Black 26-pin connector. (Scheme 5) Inspect RAP module connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between RAP module connector terminal No. 3 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 4.
- Connect RAP module connector. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If RAP module responds to NGS tester, system is functioning properly. If RAP module does not respond to NGS tester, replace RAP module. See «REMOTE ANTI-THEFT PERSONALITY MODULE»(ref-2309-S37585303792000031700000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect and inspect both halves of in-line Gray 16-pin connector C247 located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between RAP module 26-pin connector terminal No. 3 and in-line 16-pin connector C247 (male half) terminal No. 16. (Scheme 5)and (Scheme 7). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Light Blue/White wire between female half of in-line connector C247 and DLC. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between RAP module connector and male half of in-line connector C247.

TEST C: GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) Gray 26-pin connector. (Scheme 5) Inspect connector GEM connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between GEM 26-pin connector terminal No. 25 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between GEM 26-pin connector and DLC.
- Connect GEM 26-pin connector. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If GEM responds to NGS tester, system is functioning properly. If GEM does not respond to NGS tester, replace GEM. TEST D: RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE (RCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Deactivate air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect Restraint Control Module (RCM) 26-pin connector. (Scheme 8) Inspect RCM connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between RCM connector terminal No. 5 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 8). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between RCM connector and DLC.
- Connect RCM connector. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If RCM responds to NGS tester, system is functioning properly. If RCM does not respond to NGS tester, replace RCM. TEST E: AIR SUSPENSION CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Air suspension control module has two 16-pin connectors. Disconnect air suspension control module 16-pin connector C296. Connector C296 has blank terminal No. 13. (Scheme 9) Inspect air suspension control module connector C296 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between air suspension control module connector C296 terminal No. 29 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 9). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between air suspension control module and DLC.
- Connect air suspension control module connector C296. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If air suspension control module responds to NGS tester, system is functioning properly. If air suspension control module does not respond to NGS tester, replace air suspension control module. See appropriate ELECTRONIC article in SUSPENSION.

TEST F: DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE (DSM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Driver's Seat Module (DSM) 22-pin connector. Inspect DSM connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between DSM connector terminal No. 22 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 10). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 4.
- Connect DSM connector. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DSM module responds to NGS tester, system is functioning properly. If DSM module does not respond to NGS tester, replace DSM module. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in POWER SEATS - EXPEDITION, PICKUPS & NAVIGATOR article.
- Disconnect and inspect both halves of in-line Black 66-pin connector C201, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between DLC connector terminal No. 7 and in-line 66-pin connector C207 terminal No. 11 (male half). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 11). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between DSM module connector and female half of in-line connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between male half of in-line connector and DLC.

TEST G: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Note. If test results indicate PCM is faulty, always check for any engine performance related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) prior to replacing PCM. If any DTCs are present, service DTCs as necessary. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin connector. Inspect PCM connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Connect PCM connector. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If NGS tester displays PCM: NO RESPONSE ON CKT914 (BUS+), go to next step. If NGS tester does not display PCM: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS+), go to step 5.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect PCM connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between PCM connector terminal No. 16 and DLC terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 12). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, perform quick test. See QUICK TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTIC - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect and inspect both halves of bulkhead Black 40-pin connector C158 located at left rear of engine compartment. (Scheme 3) Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between DLC terminal No. 2 and female half of bulkhead connector C158 terminal No. 25. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Tan/Orange wire between male half of bulkhead connector C158 and PCM connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Orange wire between female half of bulkhead connector C158 and DLC.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect PCM connector. Measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between PCM connector terminal No. 15 and DLC terminal No. 10. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 12). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, perform quick test. See QUICK TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Disconnect and inspect both halves of bulkhead connector C158, located at left rear of engine compartment. (Scheme 3) Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between DLC terminal No. 10 and female half of bulkhead connector C158 terminal No. 29. (Scheme 4)and (Scheme 12). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Light Blue wire between male half of bulkhead connector C158 and PCM connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Light Blue wire between female half of bulkhead connector C158 and DLC.

TEST H: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster White 22-pin connector C237. (Scheme 13) Inspect instrument cluster connector C237 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Connect instrument cluster connector C237. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If NGS tester displays HEC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT914 (BUS+), go to next step. If NGS tester does not display HEC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT914 (BUS+), go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect instrument cluster White 22-pin connector C237. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between instrument cluster connector C237 terminal No. 1 and DLC terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 13). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXPEDITION, F150 & F250 LIGHT-DUTY PICKUPS, & NAVIGATOR article. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Orange wire between instrument cluster connector and DLC.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect instrument cluster White 22-pin connector C237. Measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between instrument cluster connector C237 terminal No. 2 and DLC terminal No. 10. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 13). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXPEDITION, F150 & F250 LIGHT-DUTY PICKUPS, & NAVIGATOR article. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Light Blue wire.

TEST J: ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE CONTROL (EATC) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) module has two 13-pin connectors. Disconnect EATC module 13-pin connector C280. Connector C280 has a blank terminal No. 5. (Scheme 14) Inspect EATC module connector C280 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-2309-S21759764792000031700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If NGS tester displays EATC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT914 (BUS+), go to next step. If NGS tester does not display EATC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT914 (BUS+), go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect EATC module 13-pin connector C280. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between EATC module connector C280 terminal No. 15 and DLC terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 14). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace EATC module. See appropriate AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Orange wire between EATC module connector and DLC.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect EATC module 13-pin connector C280. Measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between EATC module connector C280 terminal No. 1 at and DLC terminal No. 10. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 14). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace EATC module. See appropriate AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Light Blue wire between EATC module connector and DLC.

TEST K: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS - SCP NETWORK
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Note. Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running 2-3 volts may be present at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). These are the Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) diagnostic communications network circuits.
- Inspect New Generation Star (NGS) tester terminals for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Pay particular attention to terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). (Scheme 1) Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between PCM connector terminal No. 16 and DLC terminal No. 2. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 12). Measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between PCM connector terminal No. 15 and DLC terminal No. 10. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). If any reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If all readings indicate zero volts, perform quick test. See QUICK TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect PCM connector. Disconnect bulkhead Black 40-pin connector C158. (Scheme 3) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). If all readings indicate zero volts, repair appropriate wires between bulkhead C158 and PCM connector. If any reading indicates voltage and vehicle is equipped with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) module, connect bulkhead connector C158 and go to next step. If any reading indicates voltage and vehicle is not equipped with EATC module, connect bulkhead connector C158 and go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) module 13-pin connector C280. EATC module has two 13-pin connectors. Connector C280 has blank terminal No. 5. (Scheme 14) Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). If any reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If all readings indicate zero volts, replace EATC module. See appropriate AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster White 22-pin connector C237. (Scheme 13) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). If any reading indicates voltage, repair appropriate wire between bulkhead connector C158 (female side) and instrument cluster connector C237. If all readings indicate zero volts, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXPEDITION, F150 & F250 LIGHT-DUTY PICKUPS, & NAVIGATOR article.
TEST L: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS - ISO 9141 NETWORK
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Note. Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running 2-3 volts may be present at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). This is the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9141 diagnostic communications network circuit.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Pay particular attention to terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). (Scheme 1) Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) Gray 26-pin connector C239. Inspect GEM connector C239 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance of Light Blue/White wire between GEM connector C239 terminal No. 25 and DLC terminal No. 7. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between GEM connector C239 and DLC.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue/White wires). If both readings indicate zero volts, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (GEM/CTM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXPEDITION, F150 & F250 LIGHT-DUTY PICKUPS, & NAVIGATOR article. If either reading indicates voltage and vehicle is not equipped with Driver's Seat Module (DSM) and air suspension control module, go to step 8. If either reading indicates voltage and vehicle is equipped with DSM and air suspension control module, go to next step. If either reading indicates voltage and vehicle is only equipped with DSM (no air suspension module), go to next step. If either reading indicates voltage and vehicle is only equipped with air suspension control module (no DSM), go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect DSM 22-pin connector C356. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue/White wires). If either reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If both readings indicate zero volts, replace DSM. See DRIVER SEAT MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in POWER SEATS - EXPEDITION, PICKUPS & NAVIGATOR article.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect in-line Black 66-pin connector C201. (Scheme 6) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue wires). If either reading indicates voltage and vehicle is equipped with air suspension control module, go to next step. If either reading indicates voltage and vehicle is not equipped with air suspension control module, go to step 8. If both readings indicate zero volts, repair Light Blue/White wire between DSM connector and in-line connector C201 (female side).
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect air suspension module 16-pin connector C296. Air suspension module has two 16-pin connectors. Connector C296 has blank terminal No. 13. (Scheme 9) Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue/White wires). If either reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If both readings indicate zero volts, replace air suspension module. See appropriate ELECTRONIC article in SUSPENSION.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module Black 26-pin connector C256. (Scheme 5) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both are Light Blue wires). If either reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If both readings indicate zero volts, replace RAP module. See «REMOTE ANTI-THEFT PERSONALITY MODULE»(ref-2309-S37585303792000031700000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect in-line Gray 16-pin connector C247. (Scheme 6) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue wires). If either reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If both readings indicate zero volts, repair Light Blue/white wire between in-line connector C247 (male side) and RAP module connector.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (4WABS) module Black 24-pin connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue/White wires). If either reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If both readings indicate zero volts, replace 4WABS module.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect in-line Gray 40-pin connector C160. (Scheme 3) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue/White wires). If either reading indicates voltage, go to next step. If both readings indicate zero volts, repair Light Blue/White wire between 4WABS connector and in-line connector C160 (male side).
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Deactivate air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect Restraint Control Module (RCM) 26-pin connector. Connect GEM Gray 26-pin connector C239. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 7 and 16 (both Light Blue/White wires). If either reading indicates voltage, repair Light Blue/White wire. If both readings indicate zero volts, replace RCM. See RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPEDITION, EXPLORER, MOUNTAINEER & NAVIGATOR article.
TEST M: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO NGS TESTER
Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Inspect NGS tester connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire) and ground. (Scheme 1) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair Light Blue/White wire between central junction box and DLC.
- Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 4 (Black wire) and ground. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 5 (Black/White wire) and ground. If both readings are less than 5 ohms, repair or replace NGS tester. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire or Black/White wire between ground and DLC.

| (5) | Using NGS tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace instrument cluster. |
