Auxiliary Climate Control

An optional heater and air conditioning assembly (18D283) is available. The system is a one-piece unit that is located on the RH side of the vehicle between the side windows and the floorpan, behind the rear wheel well. The driver has primary control of the auxiliary air conditioning and heating system or can transfer control to a rear passenger control panel.

All of the auxiliary A/C-heater system components are serviceable from the inside of the vehicle except the lines.

Air Distribution

A vertical duct (18471) supplies air to the integral headliner air conditioning duct. Airflow is then directed to the passengers through adjustable registers. The heater floor duct (18D352) supplies air to a fixed register which is integral to the side trim panel and directs airflow through the fixed register to the passenger compartment.

The auxiliary A/C and heating system has the following features

  1. The auxiliary A/C and heating system is functioning whenever the instrument panel mounted A/C control is in any position except OFF.
  2. The auxiliary blower motor (18527) recirculates the air inside the vehicle. Outside air is not available to the auxiliary system.
  3. Air is cooled and dehumidified by the auxiliary A/C evaporator core (19860) only if the instrument panel mounted A/C control is adjusted to a position that requires A/C compressor (19703) operation.
  4. The temperature blend door and the mode door are controlled by electric actuator motors (19E616).
  5. Movement of the auxiliary temperature control between COOL and WARM causes a corresponding movement of the temperature blend door to mix air flowing through and around the auxiliary heater core (18476).
  6. Movement of the auxiliary mode control between PANEL and FLOOR causes a corresponding movement of the mode door to direct air flow between the panel (headliner) registers and the floor duct.

Blower Motor

The auxiliary air conditioning system contains a blower motor which is controlled by the heater blower motor switch (18578) on the front or rear auxiliary A/C control.

Heater Core

The auxiliary A/C system uses a rear heater core which operates in the same manner as the front heater core. For additional information, refer to HEATING AND VENTILATION .

A/C Evaporator Core

The auxiliary A/C system uses a rear A/C evaporator core which operates in the same manner as the front A/C evaporator core. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING .

Thermostatic Expansion Valve

An A/C evaporator expansion valve (19849) automatically regulates the flow of refrigerant into the auxiliary A/C evaporator core. It is also the dividing point in the system between low- and high-pressure sides.

The temperature sensing bulb measures the temperature of the refrigerant in the suction line and transmits it to the A/C evaporator expansion valve. This temperature variation regulates the refrigerant flow to the auxiliary A/C evaporator core.

  1. When the bulb senses a high temperature, the A/C evaporator expansion valve opens and floods refrigerant through the auxiliary A/C evaporator core.
  2. When the bulb senses a low temperature, the A/C evaporator expansion valve starts closing to shut off the refrigerant to the auxiliary A/C evaporator core.

The four auxiliary lines are one-piece tubes that are secured to the underbody of the vehicle. New auxiliary line kits are only available as two-piece lines for ease of installation.

  1. Discharge and recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-194768) .
  2. Remove the third row seat.
  3. Carefully pull out where indicated on the RH shoulder safety belt guide cover and open.
  4. Remove the RH shoulder safety belt guide. Remove the nut. Remove the shoulder safety belt guide.
  5. Pull out to release the retaining clips and remove the upper RH C-pillar trim panel.
  6. Remove floor finish panel.
  7. Remove the RH rear door scuff plate.
  8. Position the RH rear door weatherstrip away from the RH Quarter trim panel.
  9. Remove the upper liftgate trim panel.
  10. Remove the liftgate scuff plate.
  11. Remove the RH D-pillar trim panel.
  12. Position aside the RH quarter trim panel.
  13. Remove the vehicle jack.
  14. Remove 5 screws from the heater core cover.
  15. Disconnect the electrical connectors and set the wiring assembly (14A504) aside.
  16. Remove the fasteners and remove the lower air duct (18D352).
  17. Disconnect the refrigerant lines.
  18. Disconnect the evaporator case drain hose.
  19. Remove the bolts and position the air conditioning and heater assembly (18D283) aside.
  20. Remove the remaining 3 screws from the heater core cover and position aside the heater core.
  21. Remove the air conditioning and heater assembly.
  22. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: Make sure to correctly assemble and seal the air conditioning and heater assembly to allow efficient operation of the auxiliary climate control system. NOTE: Lubricate the O-ring seals with PAG Refrigerant Compressor Oil (R-134a Systems) F7AZ-19589-DA (Motorcraft YN-12-C) or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B.
  23. Evacuate, leak test and charge the A/C system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-194768) .

  1. Remove the access panel from the RH rear quarter trim panel.
  2. Remove the blower motor (18527). Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the blower motor breather. Remove the blower motor screws. Remove the blower motor.
  3. Remove the blower motor wheel (18504) from the blower motor. Remove the push clip. Remove the blower motor wheel.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the screw, disengage the clips, and lower the overhead console (519A58).
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  3. Remove the climate control assembly from the overhead console. Disconnect the electrical connectors. Remove the 2 screws. Remove the climate control assembly.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the auxiliary climate control assembly. Pull down on the front of the auxiliary climate control assembly and slide forward and downward. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  2. Remove the screws and the climate control assembly.

  1. Fabricate a removal tool from a 1/8-inch diameter rod.
  2. Rotate the A/C register with the removal tool to align the retaining ears with the clearance openings and remove the A/C register.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the third row seat.
  2. Position aside the RH rear quarter trim panel.
  3. Remove the heater core cover (18B300). Remove the 8 screws. Remove the heater core cover.
  4. Remove the heater core (18476) from the housing.
  5. Remove the heater core from the heater inlet and outlet hoses. Clamp off the heater inlet and outlet hoses. Position the constant tension clamps and disconnect the hoses from the heater core. NOTE: Make sure to correctly assemble and seal the air conditioning and heater assembly to allow efficient operation of the auxiliary climate control system. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the coolant hoses with MERPOL®: meeting Ford specification ESE-M99B144-B or plain water only, if needed. Top-off the engine cooling system.
