Engine Controls - Tests W/o Codes - Eec: Other Ford Escort V facelift

Testing & Diagnostics ~2252 words

NO CRANK

  1. Check battery voltage.
  2. Check starting circuit.
  3. Check starter motor.
  4. Check engine compression. Check engine mechanical condition. Check intake manifold, manifold gasket, camshaft and valves.

HARD START/LONG CRANK

  1. Check for vacuum leaks.
  2. Perform QUICK TEST. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  3. Check ignition system. See F - EEC BASIC TESTING article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  4. Check fuel delivery system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  5. Check air intake system. Also, ensure throttle plate and linkages operate properly.
  6. Check EGR system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS and G - EEC TESTS W/CODES articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  7. Check radiator cooling fan operation (hard, hot start only).

STALL AFTER START

  1. Check for vacuum leaks.

NO START/NORMAL CRANK

Note. Extended cranking due to a NO START condition can load the exhaust system with raw fuel and ruin the catalytic converter after engine starts. After the NO START condition has been repaired, disconnect fuel injector connectors and crank engine until surplus fuel is purged, as evidenced by absence of fuel odor in exhaust system.

SLOW RETURN TO IDLE

POOR FUEL ECONOMY

  10. Check odometer calibration.
  11. Vehicle load, driving habits, road and weather conditions can also effect fuel economy.
  12. Check for restricted exhaust system.

EMISSIONS COMPLIANCE

Canada and some states or metropolitan areas in the United States require periodic idle emission tests. All Ford products have been designed to pass these tests. If a Ford product fails an idle emission test, it is probable that the engine temperature was not warm and stabilized prior to the test, or the vehicle had idled excessively long prior to the test.

Before starting any services, verify complaints of idle emission test failure by using test procedure of area that failed vehicle. The following encompasses most of the emissions measurement modes of current state idle test procedures

  1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature and all accessories are turned off.
  2. Check emissions at idle.
  3. Operate engine at 2200-2800 RPM.
  4. Check emissions within 30 seconds.
  5. Return engine speed to idle.
  6. Check emissions within 30 seconds.

If any emission component is changed, Keep-Alive Memory (KAM) should be cleared before repeating state emission test procedure. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.

WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS

Use the following symptoms when the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) or the overdrive off light (2.0L A/T and 2.5L A/T) is on or flashing while driving.

  1. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is on or flashing while driving, perform QUICK TEST. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  2. If overdrive off light is on or flashing while driving, check for transmission codes and repair as necessary.

HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION

  1. Ensure engine oil is at proper level. Check for proper oil dipstick application.
  2. Check engine for external oil leaks.
  3. Check PCV system.
  4. Check for engine oil contamination/dilution from fuel or coolant.

COOLING SYSTEM RUNS HOT

  1. Check cooling system.
  2. Check temperature gauge accuracy.
  3. Perform QUICK TEST. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  4. Check ignition system. See F - EEC BASIC TESTING article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  5. Check engine compression. Check engine mechanical condition. Check intake manifold, manifold gasket, camshaft and valves.

COOLING SYSTEM RUNS COLD

  1. Check cooling system.
  2. Check temperature gauge accuracy.
  3. Perform QUICK TEST. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.

EXHAUST SMOKE OR SMELL

Visually inspect the following components of the catalytic converter, exhaust system and related components that may effect exhaust gas quality, cause backfire or loss of power.

  1. Check for leaking fuel injectors.
  2. Check for damaged air inlet passages.
  3. Check for inoperative EGR valve. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  4. Check for pinched or crushed exhaust pipe.
  5. Check for loose or damaged vacuum hoses.
  6. Check for incorrect idle speed. See ADJUSTMENTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  7. Check for dirty air filter.
  8. Check for damaged catalytic converter.
  9. Check for misrouted or damaged wiring.
  10. Check for damaged coil, distributor or spark plugs.
  11. Check for corroded or loose wiring harness connectors.
  12. Check EGR system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS and G - EEC TESTS W/CODES articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section..
  13. Check air intake system. Also, ensure throttle plate and linkages operate properly.

  16. Check PCV system.

  19. Check cooling system.

FUEL ODOR

  1. Check fuel delivery system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  2. Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS and G - EEC TESTS W/CODES articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  3. Check PCV system.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce the conditions creating an intermittent fault, use the following methods

* Lightly vibrate components.

* Heat component.

* Wiggle or bend wiring harness.

* Spray component with water.

* Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while attempting to simulate intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. Use the results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
