Electronic Engine Control System - 3.0L (4V): Removal & Installation Ford Escape I facelift

Removal and Installation

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  2. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the bolt and the CMP. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Inspect the O-ring seal and install new as necessary.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  3. Remove the 5 bolts and the RH splash shield. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  4. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the bolt and the CKP. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Inspect the O-ring seal and install new as necessary.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal

  1. Retrieve the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration retrieval steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(ref-232246) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  3. Remove the 2 powertrain control module (PCM) stud bolt nuts and position the wiring harness and the manifold absolute pressure sensor aside.
  4. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the 2 stud bolts and the PCM.

Installation

  1. Install the PCM and the 2 stud bolts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  2. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  3. Position the manifold absolute pressure sensor and the wiring harness and install the 2 PCM stud bolt nuts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  4. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  5. Restore the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration restore steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(ref-232246) .
  6. Reprogram the passive anti-theft system (PATS). Carry out the Key Programming Using Two Programmed Keys procedure. For additional information, refer to «ANTI-THEFT - PATS»(ref-232268) .
  7. Carry out the Transaxle Drive Cycle Test. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE-TRANSMISSION - CD4E»(ref-232215) .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  2. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the 2 screws and the TP sensor. To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  2. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connector.
  3. Remove the 2 bolts and the IAC valve and discard the gasket. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces. Install new gasket.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

CAUTIONThe mass air flow (MAF) sensor electronics module and body are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a unit. Do not tamper with the sensing elements located in the air flow bypass of the MAF body.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-232205) .
  3. Disconnect the mass airflow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 4 nuts and the MAF sensor. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-232207) .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  3. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the ECT sensor. Pull upward on the locking tab. Rotate the sensor counterclockwise and remove.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

WARNINGFuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232262) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  3. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector and vacuum tube.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor. To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in). Inspect the O-ring seal and install new as necessary.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
