Removal and Installation

CAUTIONIf installing a new A/C compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the A/C system. If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor. For additional information, refer to HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION . If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed. For additional information, refer to HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION . Install a new evaporator core orifice. For additional information, refer to EVAPORATOR CORE ORIFICE . Install a new suction accumulator. For additional information, refer to SUCTION ACCUMULATOR .

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the A/C system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Recover the A/C refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - 2.3L»(ref-232224) .
  4. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the suction accumulator to compressor line. Remove the suction accumulator to compressor line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  6. Disconnect the compressor to condenser discharge line. Remove the compressor to condenser discharge line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  7. Remove and discard the O-rings.
  8. Remove the 3 bolts and the A/C compressor. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. If not filtering the A/C system, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system.   1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Recover the A/C refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-232225) .
  4. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly. Remove the bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  6. Remove and discard the 2 O-rings.
  7. Remove the A/C compressor nut and the 2 A/C compressor bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the A/C compressor.
  9. If necessary, remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure. If not filtering the A/C system, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. Installation

Note. If installing a new A/C compressor, the A/C clutch components should be reused unless obvious signs of damage are found. If excessive grooving is found, a new A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley must be installed together. Otherwise, each component can be installed individually where needed.

  1. Visually inspect the A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil for damage. Inspect for physical damage, including cracked or melted components or discoloration due to excessive heat. Inspect for excessive wear, including grooving in the A/C clutch disc and hub or A/C compressor pulley that is more than fingernail depth. Inspect for roughness in the A/C compressor pulley bearing.
  2. Clean the A/C clutch field coil and pulley mounting surfaces.
  3. Apply a pea-sized drop of silicone sealant to the thermal limiter socket.
  4. Install the A/C clutch field coil. Install the A/C clutch field coil. Install the thermal limiter. Tighten the bolt to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  5. Install the A/C compressor pulley. Install the special tool. Install the A/C compressor pulley.
  6. Install the A/C compressor pulley snap ring.
  7. Place one nominal thickness A/C clutch disc and hub spacer inside the clutch hub spline opening.
  8. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.
  9. Using the special tool, install the A/C compressor clutch nut. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool. Tighten the nut to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
  10. Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by adding or removing A/C clutch disc and hub spacers.

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not necessary when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C component or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. If an A/C evaporator core leak is suspected, the A/C evaporator core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .

Note. The evaporator core and evaporator housing must be installed as a complete unit.

  1. Remove the A/C evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATING AND VENTILATION»(ref-232228) .
  2. Transfer, the components from the old evaporator core housing to the new evaporator core housing.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new A/C evaporator core with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil YN-12-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .

Removal

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. New O-ring seals, lubricated in clean mineral oil, must be installed before reconnecting any A/C fitting which has been disconnected.

Scheme 4: Removal
  1. Remove the orifice evaporator inlet line. For additional information, refer to «CONDENSER TO EVAPORATOR LINE»(ref-232213-S39285927282006051600000) .
  2. Inspect the evaporator core orifice for damage before attempting to remove it from the line.
  3. If the evaporator core orifice is broken, screw the end of the special tool into the broken orifice. Hold the T-handle stationary while rotating the tool body to remove the evaporator core orifice.

Scheme 5: Installation
  1. Lubricate the evaporator core orifice O-rings with clean mineral oil and install the evaporator core orifice using the special tool.
  2. Install the orifice evaporator inlet line. For additional information, refer to «CONDENSER TO EVAPORATOR LINE»(ref-232213-S39285927282006051600000) . If not filtering the A/C system, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION (HYBRID) (SUPPLEMENTAL)»(ref-232281) . Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system.   2. Disconnect the A/C cycling switch electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the evaporator core outlet tube spring lock coupling and the A/C compressor manifold and tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  4. Remove the 2 suction accumulator bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system.   1. Disconnect the A/C cycling switch electrical connector.
  2. Remove the A/C cycling switch. To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Disconnect the high pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.
  2. Remove the high pressure cut-off switch.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning (A/C) system except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

Note. If a condenser core leak is suspected, the condenser core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
  4. Remove the 2 condenser core peanut fitting nuts. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  5. Remove the 4 condenser core bracket bolts and the 2 condenser core brackets. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  6. Position aside the power steering cooler.
  7. Remove the condenser core.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .

  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
  4. Remove the auxiliary cooling radiator. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232208) .
  5. Disconnect the peanut fittings from the condenser. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  6. Remove the 4 bolts and the upper radiator mounting brackets. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  7. Remove the 2 condenser core supports bolts and the condenser. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION (HYBRID) (SUPPLEMENTAL)»(ref-232281) . Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system.   3. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
  4. Remove the DC/DC converter. For additional information, refer to «CHARGING SYSTEM - HIGH VOLTAGE CONVERTER/INVERTER - (HYBRID)»(ref-232263) .
  5. Disconnect the front auxiliary evaporator outlet line peanut fitting. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in)
  6. Disconnect the suction accumulator spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  7. Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly peanut fitting. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Remove and discard the O-rings. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  8. Remove the compressor manifold and tube assembly bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  9. Remove the compressor manifold and tube assembly bracket nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in)
  10. Remove the compressor manifold and tube assembly.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
  4. Disconnect the high pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.
  5. Remove the condenser to evaporator line bracket nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  6. Disconnect the evaporator core spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  7. Remove the condenser to evaporator line peanut fitting nut and disconnect the line. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  8. Remove the condenser to evaporator line.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .

  3. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
  4. Remove the DC/DC converter. For additional information, refer to «CHARGING SYSTEM - HIGH VOLTAGE CONVERTER/INVERTER - (HYBRID)»(ref-232263) .
  5. Disconnect the condenser to evaporator line peanut fitting. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  6. Disconnect the high pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.
  7. Remove the pin-type retainer.
  8. Remove the condenser to evaporator line bracket nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  9. Loosen the nut and disconnect the passenger zone valve fitting. Remove and discard the O-ring. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
  4. Remove the RH splash shield. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-232284) .
  5. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
  6. Remove the compressor to condenser discharge line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  7. Disconnect the compressor to condenser discharge line from the compressor. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the condenser core peanut fitting nut and disconnect the condenser core peanut fitting compressor. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  9. Remove the compressor to condenser discharge line.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  3. Remove the RH splash shield. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-232284) .
  4. If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the suction accumulator to compressor line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  7. Disconnect the suction accumulator to compressor line from the A/C compressor.
  8. Remove the 2 suction accumulator to compressor line bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  9. Disconnect the suction accumulator to compressor line spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  10. Remove the suction accumulator to compressor line.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  2. Loosen the nuts and disconnect the evaporator inlet line fittings. Remove and discard the O-rings. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. Remove the evaporator inlet line.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  2. Loosen the nut and disconnect the evaporator inlet line fitting. Remove and discard the O-ring. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. Disconnect the orifice evaporator inlet line spring lock coupling and remove the orifice evaporator inlet line. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
  2. Loosen the nuts and disconnect the passenger zone valve line fitting. Remove and discard the O-rings. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. Remove the passenger zone valve mounting nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the passenger zone valve.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
