Removal and Installation
| CAUTION | If installing a new A/C compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the A/C system. If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor. If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed. Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the A/C system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Recover the A/C refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - 2.3L»(ref-232224) .
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the suction accumulator to compressor line. Remove the suction accumulator to compressor line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the compressor to condenser discharge line. Remove the compressor to condenser discharge line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the O-rings.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the A/C compressor. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. If not filtering the A/C system, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. - Recover the A/C refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-232225) .
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly. Remove the bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the 2 O-rings.
- Remove the A/C compressor nut and the 2 A/C compressor bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Remove the A/C compressor.
- If necessary, remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. If not filtering the A/C system, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. Installation
Note. If installing a new A/C compressor, the A/C clutch components should be reused unless obvious signs of damage are found. If excessive grooving is found, a new A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley must be installed together. Otherwise, each component can be installed individually where needed.

- Visually inspect the A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil for damage. Inspect for physical damage, including cracked or melted components or discoloration due to excessive heat. Inspect for excessive wear, including grooving in the A/C clutch disc and hub or A/C compressor pulley that is more than fingernail depth. Inspect for roughness in the A/C compressor pulley bearing.
- Clean the A/C clutch field coil and pulley mounting surfaces.
- Apply a pea-sized drop of silicone sealant to the thermal limiter socket.
- Install the A/C clutch field coil. Install the A/C clutch field coil. Install the thermal limiter. Tighten the bolt to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
- Install the A/C compressor pulley. Install the special tool. Install the A/C compressor pulley.
- Install the A/C compressor pulley snap ring.
- Place one nominal thickness A/C clutch disc and hub spacer inside the clutch hub spline opening.
- Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.
- Using the special tool, install the A/C compressor clutch nut. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool. Tighten the nut to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
- Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by adding or removing A/C clutch disc and hub spacers.

Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not necessary when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C component or damage to the suction accumulator.
Note. If an A/C evaporator core leak is suspected, the A/C evaporator core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
Note. The evaporator core and evaporator housing must be installed as a complete unit.
- Remove the A/C evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to «HEATING AND VENTILATION»(ref-232228) .
- Transfer, the components from the old evaporator core housing to the new evaporator core housing.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the new A/C evaporator core with the correct amount of PAG Compressor Oil YN-12-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
Removal
Note. Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.
Note. New O-ring seals, lubricated in clean mineral oil, must be installed before reconnecting any A/C fitting which has been disconnected.
Scheme 4
- Remove the orifice evaporator inlet line. For additional information, refer to «CONDENSER TO EVAPORATOR LINE»(ref-232213-S39285927282006051600000) .
- Inspect the evaporator core orifice for damage before attempting to remove it from the line.
- If the evaporator core orifice is broken, screw the end of the special tool into the broken orifice. Hold the T-handle stationary while rotating the tool body to remove the evaporator core orifice.
Scheme 5
- Lubricate the evaporator core orifice O-rings with clean mineral oil and install the evaporator core orifice using the special tool.
- Install the orifice evaporator inlet line. For additional information, refer to «CONDENSER TO EVAPORATOR LINE»(ref-232213-S39285927282006051600000) . If not filtering the A/C system, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION (HYBRID) (SUPPLEMENTAL)»(ref-232281) . Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. - Disconnect the A/C cycling switch electrical connector.
- Disconnect the evaporator core outlet tube spring lock coupling and the A/C compressor manifold and tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the 2 suction accumulator bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Disconnect the A/C cycling switch electrical connector.
- Remove the A/C cycling switch. To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Disconnect the high pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.
- Remove the high pressure cut-off switch.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
- Remove the 2 condenser core peanut fitting nuts. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Remove the 4 condenser core bracket bolts and the 2 condenser core brackets. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Position aside the power steering cooler.
- Remove the condenser core.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. - Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
- Remove the auxiliary cooling radiator. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232208) .
- Disconnect the peanut fittings from the condenser. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Remove the 4 bolts and the upper radiator mounting brackets. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Remove the 2 condenser core supports bolts and the condenser. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. - With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .

- Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
- Remove the DC/DC converter. For additional information, refer to «CHARGING SYSTEM - HIGH VOLTAGE CONVERTER/INVERTER - (HYBRID)»(ref-232263) .
- Disconnect the front auxiliary evaporator outlet line peanut fitting. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in)
- Disconnect the suction accumulator spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Disconnect the compressor manifold and tube assembly peanut fitting. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . Remove and discard the O-rings. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Remove the compressor manifold and tube assembly bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Remove the compressor manifold and tube assembly bracket nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in)
- Remove the compressor manifold and tube assembly.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
- Disconnect the high pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.
- Remove the condenser to evaporator line bracket nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Disconnect the evaporator core spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the condenser to evaporator line peanut fitting nut and disconnect the line. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Remove the condenser to evaporator line.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
- Remove the DC/DC converter. For additional information, refer to «CHARGING SYSTEM - HIGH VOLTAGE CONVERTER/INVERTER - (HYBRID)»(ref-232263) .
- Disconnect the condenser to evaporator line peanut fitting. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Disconnect the high pressure cut-off switch electrical connector.
- Remove the pin-type retainer.
- Remove the condenser to evaporator line bracket nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Loosen the nut and disconnect the passenger zone valve fitting. Remove and discard the O-ring. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-232256) .
- Remove the RH splash shield. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-232284) .
- If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
- Remove the compressor to condenser discharge line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the compressor to condenser discharge line from the compressor. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Remove the condenser core peanut fitting nut and disconnect the condenser core peanut fitting compressor. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) . To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Remove the compressor to condenser discharge line.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the RH splash shield. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-232284) .
- If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater electrical connector.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
- Remove the suction accumulator to compressor line bolt. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the suction accumulator to compressor line from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the 2 suction accumulator to compressor line bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Disconnect the suction accumulator to compressor line spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Remove the suction accumulator to compressor line.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Evacuate, leak test, and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Loosen the nuts and disconnect the evaporator inlet line fittings. Remove and discard the O-rings. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Remove the evaporator inlet line.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Loosen the nut and disconnect the evaporator inlet line fitting. Remove and discard the O-ring. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Disconnect the orifice evaporator inlet line spring lock coupling and remove the orifice evaporator inlet line. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
- Loosen the nuts and disconnect the passenger zone valve line fitting. Remove and discard the O-rings. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Remove the passenger zone valve mounting nut. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the passenger zone valve.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Charge and leak test the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «HVAC CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232279) .
