DESCRIPTION

Note. This article includes Cutaway and RV Cutaway.

Power side view mirror system consists of mirror head with integral reversible servomotor assembly and mirror control switch mounted on driver's door trim panel. Control switch adjusts outside mirrors up or down, left or right.

INSPECTION & VERIFICATION

Before performing individual component tests or diagnostic tests, verify customer concern by operating power mirror system. Visually inspect system for obvious sign of mechanical and electrical damage. Check fuses. Check for damaged wiring harness and/or loose, corroded connections. Check for damage to switches, mirror assemblies and mirror motors. Repair as necessary. If no visual damage is evident, perform appropriate system test. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.

SYSTEM TESTS

Verify customer complaint by operating power mirrors. Visually inspect for obvious sign of mechanical and electrical damage. If no visual damage is evident, perform appropriate system test. See SYMPTOM INDEX table. A digital volt-ohmmeter is required to test power mirror system.

SYMPTOM INDEX

TEST A: BOTH SIDE MIRRORS INOPERATIVE

  1. Remove outside mirror control switch and disconnect 8-pin harness connector C505. Test mirror control switch. See «OUTSIDE MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors__outside-mirror-control-switch) under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay, go to next step. If switch is defective, replace outside mirror control switch.
  2. Measure voltage between ground and outside mirror control switch connector C505 terminal No. 1 (Light Green/Yellow in 1999, Orange/Light Green wire in 2000). (Scheme 1)or (Scheme 2). If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, repair open in Light Green/Yellow or Orange/Light Green wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors). Recheck system operation.
  3. Measure resistance between ground and outside mirror control switch connector C505 terminal No. 5 (Black wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open in Yellow wire between mirrors and mirror control switch. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors). Recheck system operation.

TEST B: ONE SIDE MIRROR INOPERATIVE

  1. Test mirror control switch. See «OUTSIDE MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors__outside-mirror-control-switch) under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay and left mirror is inoperative, go to next step. If switch is okay and right mirror is inoperative go to step 3. If switch is defective, replace mirror control switch.
  2. Disconnect driver's outside mirror 3-pin harness connector C507. Individually measure resistance of Dark Blue, Red and Yellow wires between outside mirror control switch harness connector C505 and driver's mirror harness connector C507. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). If any resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, replace driver's outside mirror assembly. Recheck system operation.
  3. Disconnect passenger's outside mirror 3-pin harness connector C606. Individually measure resistance of Violet, Dark Green and Yellow wires between outside mirror control switch connector C505 and passenger's mirror connector C606. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors). If any resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, replace passenger's outside mirror assembly. Recheck system operation.

OUTSIDE MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH

Remove mirror control switch. Check for continuity between specified terminals while operating switch in appropriate direction. See appropriate MIRROR SWITCH TEST table. (Scheme 3)or (Scheme 4). Continuity should exist between specified terminals. If continuity does not exist as specified, replace switch.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove mirror mounting hole cover. Remove door trim panel. Remove and disconnect speaker. Disconnect mirror wiring harness connector. Remove mirror attaching nuts. Remove mirror assembly while guiding wiring and connector through hole in door. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts to approximately 53-71 INCH lbs. (6-8 N.m).

Pry control switch assembly from driver arm rest. Disconnect mirror harness connector. Depress retaining clips on switch housing. Push base of switch out of switch assembly plate. Remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
