Door Locks & Anti-Theft Systems 6 illustrations ~2851 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system consists of power door lock system, a control module with integral receiver, up to 4 hand-held transmitter(s) and necessary wiring. RKE module can store up to 4 transmitters in memory. RKE functions only when ignition is not in RUN or ACC position. The control module performs the following functions

  1. Locks and unlocks all doors.
  2. Turns on interior lights.
  3. Arms and disarms anti-theft system (if equipped).
  4. Activates security feature to sound horn and flash exterior lights.
  5. Activates battery saver, which removes power from interior lights 40-45 minutes after last input to control module. The remote entry system receives inputs from the following
  6. Interior light switch.
  7. Door ajar switches.
  8. Door lock cylinders.
  9. Door lock switches.
  10. Ignition switch.
  11. Program connector.
  12. Remote transmitter(s). Control module sends outputs to the following
  13. Interior lights.
  14. Door lock actuators.
  15. Horn relay.
  16. Parking lights.

To unlock driver's door, press UNLOCK button on transmitter. This also disarms anti-theft system. To unlock all doors, press UNLOCK button twice within 3 seconds. To turn on interior lights press UNLOCK button. To lock all doors, press LOCK button once. This also arms anti-theft system. To confirm all doors are locked, press LOCK button again within 3 seconds. If vehicle is equipped with a side sliding door and sliding door was open during lock activation, the memory lock feature will activate to lock the sliding door after is has been closed. Horn will sound and doors will lock again. To activate security alarm, press PANIC button. Horn will sound and exterior lights will flash for a maximum of 3 minutes. To deactivate security alarm, press PANIC button again or turn ignition switch to ON position.

REMOTE TRANSMITTER WITHOUT ICONS

Note. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Data Link Connector (DLC) may also be referred to as program connector.

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN or ACC position. Using shorting pin, temporarily short terminals of RKE DLC together. RKE DLC is located at base of steering column. On all models, all doors should lock, then unlock.
  2. Press any button on transmitter(s). All doors should lock, then unlock to verify transmitter(s) have been programmed. If doors do not respond, press button again (3 times maximum) with same transmitter. If doors still do not respond, go to «TEST A: ALL DOOR LOCKS INOPERATIVE»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#remote-keyless-entry-systems) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Repeat procedure for additional transmitters (4 maximum). Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove shorting pin from RKE DLC. Very remote transmitters have been programmed by depressing LOCK and UNLOCK buttons and vehicle responds accordingly.

REMOTE TRANSMITTER WITH ICONS

  1. Turn ignition switch from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds ending in RUN position. If RKE module has entered program mode, all doors will lock and unlock.
  2. Within 20 seconds, press any button on a remote transmitter. Door locks should lock and unlock to verify remote transmitter has been programmed. Repeat this step for all remote transmitters to be programmed.
  3. If door locks do not respond for any remote transmitter, wait several seconds. Press button again. If door locks still do not respond, go to «INSPECTION & VERIFICATION»(/ford/econoline/i-1985-2013/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#remote-keyless-entry-systems__inspection-verification) under TROUBLESHOOTING.
  4. Turn ignition off or wait 20 seconds after step 2 to exit program mode. Doors should lock and unlock again to confirm program exit. Test remote transmitter operation.

INSPECTION & VERIFICATION

WARNINGDisable air bag system before working around steering column or removing any air bag system component. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Note. Keep driver's window rolled down during testing to avoid being locked out of vehicle.

Verify customer concern by operating door locks to duplicate condition. Visually inspect components. If inspection reveals an obvious concern which can be easily serviced, correct malfunction before continuing inspection and verification. Check the following

  1. Low battery charge.
  2. Blown fuse(s).
  3. Loose or corroded connectors.
  4. Damaged wiring.
  5. Damaged transmitter(s).
  6. Faulty transmitter batteries.
  7. Binding locks or latches.

SYSTEM TESTS

Note. Keep driver's window rolled down when performing system tests to avoid getting locked out of vehicle. Before beginning any testing, ensure battery is fully charged. Lubricate door lock latch and linkage system. Manually cycle door locks 10 times to ensure proper operation. A digital multimeter is required for testing the power door lock system.
