Shift Interlock Systems Ford Econoline I

Automatic Trans 23 illustrations ~12247 words

ALL MODELS

System is a 2-function electro/mechanical system which prevents free movement of the shift lever. On models with column shift, a shift lock actuator is mounted on the steering column. On models with floor mounted shift lever, a shift lock actuator is mounted on the ignition switch end of the interlock cable. This actuator prevents the ignition switch from being turned to LOCK position unless shift lever is in "P" position. Shift lever may not be moved from "P" position if the ignition key is in the RUN position unless the brake pedal is depressed.

On Escort, Escort ZX2, Tracer and Villager, a cable system between ignition switch and shift lever prevents ignition key from being removed from switch unless shift lever is in "P" position.

An electronic shift lock actuator, mounted at the base of the shift lever, locks shift lever in "P" position until ignition switch is in RUN position and brake pedal is depressed.

Emergency Override Function (Contour, Cougar & Mystique)

Ensure shift lever is locked in Park. Use a screwdriver or similar item as an unlocking lever and push backward on actuator and hold in position. (Scheme 5) If shift lever is moved back into "P" position, it will re-lock.

Scheme 5

Scheme 5: Emergency Override Function (Contour, Cougar & Mystique)

Emergency Override Function (Escort, Escort ZX2 & Tracer)

Ensure shift lever is locked in Park. Use a screwdriver to lift small access cover at upper right corner of shift bezel. Insert a screwdriver vertically into access hole and push downward to release lock lever. Ensure shift lever is released from Park.

ALL MODELS - EXCEPT ESCORT, ESCORT ZX2, TRACER & VILLAGER

Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Ensure shift lever is in "P" position. Ensure shift lever may only be moved to "R" position when brake pedal is depressed. Ensure ignition switch cannot be turned to LOCK position with shift lever in "R" position. Move shift lever to "P" position and ensure ignition switch may be turned to LOCK position and key removed.
