MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

An optional auxiliary climate control system is available. The auxiliary climate control housing is located on the LH side of the vehicle behind the rear wheel well.

Control of the auxiliary climate control system is accomplished using the front (main) climate control assembly on the instrument panel. No auxiliary climate control assembly is present for the rear passengers.

Air Distribution

Vehicles with trim have a vertical duct that supplies air to the integral headliner A/C duct. Air is supplied to the passengers through six adjustable registers. The floor duct is integral to the side trim panel and has 4 fixed registers. The trim panel connects directly to the auxiliary A/C-heater unit.

Vehicles without trim do not have overhead registers or floor ducts. A unique register is used to distribute air-conditioned air and a heater outlet duct assembly distributes heated air.

System Airflow

The function selector switch (located in the front A/C control) controls the air distribution for both the front and auxiliary systems.

Airflow mode and temperature blend are accomplished using a single vacuum control motor which operates a single airflow mode door. When the function selector switch is in the DEFROST, FLOOR or MIX position, all airflow is directed through the auxiliary heater core to the floor outlet. Therefore only heated air is available from the auxiliary system when in the DEFROST, FLOOR or MIX mode regardless of the temperature selected for the front (main) airflow outlets.

When the function selector switch is in the VENT, NORM A/C, or MAX A/C mode, all airflow is directed through the auxiliary evaporator core to the overhead registers (if equipped) or the upper airflow outlet. Therefore only cooled air will be available from the auxiliary system in the NORM A/C or MAX A/C mode regardless of the temperature selected for the front (main) airflow outlets. Only ambient temperature air is available from the auxiliary system in the VENT mode because the A/C compressor is not operational in this mode.

The auxiliary system uses only recirculated air from inside the vehicle. Fresh (outside) air is not available from the auxiliary system.

Blower Motor

The auxiliary climate control assembly contains a blower motor. It is controlled by the blower motor switch on the front climate control assembly.

Heater Core

The heater core consists of fins and tubes arranged to extract heat from the engine coolant and transfer it to air passing through the heater core.

A/C Evaporator Core

The evaporator core is the plate/fin type. A mixture of refrigerant and oil enters the bottom of the evaporator core through the evaporator core inlet tube and is routed so it flows through the partitioned plate/fin sections. Refrigerant then moves out of the evaporator core through the evaporator core outlet tube.

Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV)

Note. The Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) is not separately serviceable. It is serviced only with the evaporator core as an assembly.

A TXV regulates the flow of refrigerant into the auxiliary evaporator core. It is also the dividing point in the auxiliary portion of the refrigerant system between the low- and high-pressure sides.

The TXV includes a temperature sensing bulb which measures the temperature of the refrigerant in the suction line and transmits it to the TXV. This temperature variation regulates the refrigerant flow to the auxiliary evaporator core.

  1. When the bulb senses a high temperature, the TXV opens to increase refrigerant flow through the auxiliary evaporator core.
  2. When the bulb senses a low temperature, the TXV starts closing to decrease refrigerant flow to the auxiliary evaporator core.

  2. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) . Vehicles with quarter trim panels
  3. Remove the rear seats to access the LH rear quarter trim panel.
  4. Remove the body side trim finish panel. Remove the 3 pin-type retainers. Remove the finish panel from the body side.
  5. If equipped, disconnect the powerpoint electrical connector.
  6. Remove the rear seat shoulder strap opening covers. Pry the rear seat shoulder strap covers from the upper trim panels.
  7. Pull the rear door weatherstrip off at the rear door opening to access the trim panel pin-type retainers.
  8. Remove the rear upper quarter trim panel. Remove the screw. Remove the 3 pin-type retainers. Remove the rear upper quarter trim panel.
  9. Remove the lower quarter trim panel. Remove the 5 screws (extended wagon), or 3 screws (regular wagon). Remove the 3 pin-type retainers. Lift the panel slightly and remove the trim panel from the body side. All vehicles
  10. Remove the window latches (if equipped). Remove the 2 window latch screws (1 shown in illustration). Remove the window latch.
  11. Disconnect the heater hoses from the auxiliary heater core.
  12. Disconnect the auxiliary evaporator outlet and inlet line spring lock couplings. Discard the O-ring seals.
  13. Remove the auxiliary plenum chamber. Remove the screw. Remove the auxiliary plenum chamber.
  14. Remove the auxiliary A/C and heater assembly. Remove the screws. Remove the auxiliary A/C and heater assembly.
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system.   1. Remove the rear seats to access the LH rear quarter trim panel.
  2. Remove the body side trim finish panel. Remove the 3 pin-type retainers. Remove the finish panel from the body side.
  3. If equipped, disconnect the powerpoint electrical connector.

  6. Remove the rear upper quarter trim panel. Remove the screw. Remove the 3 pin-type retainers. Remove the rear upper quarter trim panel.
  7. Remove the lower quarter trim panel. Remove the 5 screws (extended wagon), or 3 screws (regular wagon). Remove the 3 pin-type retainers. Lift the panel slightly and remove the trim panel from the body side.
  8. Remove the window latches (if equipped). Remove the 2 window latch screws (1 shown in illustration). Remove the window latch. All vehicles

  10. Remove the blower motor wheel. Remove the retaining clip. Remove the blower motor wheel.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. If an evaporator core leak is suspected, the evaporator core must be vacuum leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.

  2. Disconnect the evaporator core spring lock couplings. Discard the O-ring seals.
  3. Position the heater hoses aside.
  4. Remove the evaporator case cover. Remove the 4 screws. Remove the evaporator case cover.
  5. Remove the evaporator core. Remove the seal. Remove the evaporator core.
  6. Remove the evaporator core seal.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  11. Release the clamps and disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  12. Remove the heater core. Remove the heater core case seal. Remove the heater core.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the vacuum line.
  3. Remove the vacuum control motor. Remove the screw. Detach and remove the vacuum control motor.
  4. Disconnect the vacuum control motor from the airflow mode door.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
