Engine Removal Ford Econoline E150

Ranger

  1. Remove battery and drain cooling system. Disconnect idle speed control hose, heat riser tube and air cleaner outlet tube at throttle body.
  2. Mark location of hood hinges and remove hood. Remove radiator shroud attaching screws. Remove upper radiator supports. Remove cooling fan and shroud. Remove radiator with hoses. Disconnect primary wire at coil.
  3. Disconnect oil pressure sending unit, water temperature sending unit, alternator and starter wires. Disconnect accelerator cable and automatic transmission kickdown rod (if equipped) from throttle body. Remove A/C compressor from bracket and position aside with hoses attached (if equipped).
  4. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose. Disconnect 2 push connect fittings at engine fuel rail. Remove heater hoses from engine. Remove engine mount nuts.
  5. Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Remove starter motor. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove dust cover from transmission. On manual transmission models, remove flywheel housing cover bolts.
  6. On automatic transmission models, remove converter-to-flywheel and bellhousing lower bolts. Support transmission and lower vehicle. Remove upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Attach engine hoist and lift engine out of vehicle.

Bronco & Pickup

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and crankcase. Scribe hood hinge position and remove hood. Remove throttle body inlet tubes. Remove heater hoses and air cleaner assembly. Remove A/C compressor and condenser (if equipped).
  2. Disconnect fuel line. Remove radiator, cooling fan, viscous drive and water pump pulley. Disconnect accelerator cable at throttle body and remove return spring. Remove power brake vacuum hose at intake manifold.
  3. Disconnect kickdown cable at throttle body (automatic transmission). Separate exhaust pipe from manifold. Disconnect body ground strap and battery cable from engine. Remove wiring harness from coil and all sending units.
  4. Disconnect EEC-IV sensors. Remove alternator mounting bolts and position alternator aside with wires attached. Remove power steering pump from mounting brackets and position aside with lines attached.
  5. On A/C equipped models, bleed system and disconnect pressure lines. Raise vehicle. Remove starter and automatic transmission filler tube bracket. Remove engine rear plate upper right bolt.
  6. Remove all bellhousing lower retaining bolts and disconnect clutch retracting spring (manual transmission). Remove converter housing access cover and flex plate-to-converter nuts. Secure converter assembly in housing (automatic transmission).
  7. Remove automatic transmission cooler lines from clip at engine. Remove converter housing lower retaining bolts. Remove insulator support bracket nut from each front engine support. Lower vehicle and support transmission with floor jack.
  8. Remove remaining bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Attach engine hoist to engine. Raise engine slightly to separate from transmission. Remove engine from vehicle.

Van

  1. Remove engine cover and air cleaner assembly. Drain cooling system. Disconnect battery. Remove front bumper, grille and lower gravel deflector. Disconnect coolant hoses and transmission oil lines from radiator.
  2. Remove radiator and shroud. Disconnect brake booster and heater hoses at intake manifold. Disconnect alternator and position aside. Remove power steering pump drive belt, pump and bracket from engine. Disconnect and plug fuel line at fuel rail.
  3. Disconnect distributor, EEC-IV sensors and sending unit wires from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable and remove bracket from engine. Disconnect automatic transmission kickdown cable at throttle body. Remove exhaust manifold heat deflector and exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts.
  4. Disconnect transmission vacuum line at intake manifold and junction. Remove upper transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove automatic transmission dipstick tube support at intake manifold. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter.
  5. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Remove flex plate-to-flywheel nuts. Remove front engine mount nuts. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Lower vehicle from hoist. Attach lifting device to engine. Remove engine from vehicle.

Bronco II & Ranger

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Remove hood, air cleaner and intake duct assembly. Remove fan shroud and position over fan. Remove radiator with hoses and shroud. Remove alternator, bracket and power brake vacuum hose from engine.
  2. Remove A/C compressor and power steering pump with hoses attached (if equipped). Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Disconnect fuel tank-to-fuel rail lines at fuel rail. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose. Disconnect throttle cable linkage and shield at throttle body and intake manifold.
  3. Disconnect EGR vacuum hoses (if equipped), front and rear vacuum fitting in upper intake manifold. Disconnect wiring from coil. Disconnect wiring from oil pressure and engine coolant temperature sending units. Disconnect injector harness, air charge temperature sensor, throttle position sensor and EGR pressure sensor (if equipped).
  4. Raise vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds. Remove starter and front engine mount nuts or through bolts. Remove ground wires from engine block. On automatic transmission models, remove converter inspection cover and disconnect flywheel from converter. Remove kickdown rod and bellhousing mounting bolts. Remove adapter plate-to-converter housing bolt.
  5. On manual transmission models, remove clutch housing bolts and hydraulic clutch hose. Remove engine front support-to-crossmember nuts and bolts. Lower vehicle and attach engine hoist to brackets at exhaust manifolds. Ensure all wires and hoses are disconnected before raising engine. Support transmission. Remove engine from vehicle.

Aerostar

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly. Remove radiator hoses and fan shroud. Disconnect Barometric Manifold Absolute Pressure (BMAP) sensor. Remove throttle linkage shroud.
  2. Disconnect throttle linkage at throttle body. Loosen drive belt idler arm bolts. Pull injector harness forward to disconnect coolant temperature sensor connector. Disconnect canister purge solenoid hoses from solenoid. Disconnect power steering pump pressure switch (if equipped).
  3. Remove heater hoses. Remove breather tube from air cleaner and valve cover. Remove transmission oil cooler lines from radiator (if equipped). Remove radiator retaining bolts and radiator. Loosen alternator idler arm and remove alternator belt.
  4. Remove A/C compressor and set aside. Remove transmission oil fill tube bolt from top of manifold (if equipped). Disconnect alternator connectors (2). Remove brake booster vacuum line from brake booster. Remove bolt retaining steering gear at top of shaft.
  5. Remove engine cover. Disconnect radio frequency interference suppressor. Disconnect Thick Film Ignition (TFI) connector at distributor. Disconnect oil pressure wire. On manual transmission models, position shifter in Neutral. Remove shift lever-to-floor retaining bolts.
  6. Remove shift lever-to-transmission retaining bolts. Remove shift lever. Raise vehicle. Disconnect fuel lines at sender. Disconnect oil level sensor from oil pan. Remove drive shaft. Pull speedometer cable out of rear of transmission. Remove starter connections and starter.
  7. On manual transmission models, remove lockpin retaining hydraulic hose to slave cylinder in clutch housing. Remove and plug hose. Disconnect back-up light switch, shift indicator and neutral switch wires. On automatic transmission models, disconnect neutral start switch connector. Disconnect selector and kickdown cable from transmission lever.
  8. Disconnect vacuum modulator hose. Remove converter access cover and adapter plate bolts from lower end of converter housing. Remove flywheel-to-converter attaching nuts. Disconnect oxygen sensor. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from transmission (if equipped).
  9. Place transmission jack under transmission. Place a safety chain around transmission. Slightly raise transmission. Remove insulator-to-crossmember nuts. Remove insulator (if necessary). Remove crossmember-to-bracket bolts and nuts. Remove crossmember.
  10. Remove bellhousing-to-engine fasteners. Slide transmission rearward. Lower transmission from vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds. Remove exhaust pipe and converter. Remove front wheels. Remove engine ground straps.
  11. Remove stabilizer bar nuts and disconnect stabilizer bar from lower control arms. Disconnect and plug brake lines at bracket on frame. Place jack under lower control arm until tension is applied to coil spring. Remove upper spindle-to-control arm ball joint bolt and nut. Slowly lower jack to disconnect spindle from ball joint.
  12. Position Drive Train Removal Lift (109-00002) under crossmember and engine assembly. Lower vehicle until crossmember rests on lift. Place wood blocks under front crossmember and rear of engine (or transmission, if assembled) to keep unit level.
  13. Install safety chains around crossmember and table. With engine and crossmember securely supported on lift, remove 3 engine and crossmember-to-frame retaining bolts from each side of vehicle. Slowly lower engine assembly out of vehicle.
  14. Ensure A/C compressor and wiring harnesses are disconnected. Raise body from engine and crossmember assembly. Disconnect and plug power steering hoses from pump. Remove motor mount nuts. Remove engine from crossmember.
  1. Drain cooling system and crankcase. Mark hood hinges and remove hood. Disconnect battery. Disconnect ground cables from cylinder block. On 5.0L MPFI, remove air intake hoses, PCV tube and carbon canister hose. On 5.8L MPFI, remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly with crankcase ventilation and carbon canister hoses attached. Disconnect radiator hoses.
  2. Disconnect transmission cooler lines (if equipped). Disconnect engine oil cooler lines at oil filter adapter (if equipped). On A/C equipped models, discharge system. Remove condenser and disconnect hoses at compressor. Remove fan shroud, spacer, pulley and radiator. Remove and position alternator aside.
  3. Disconnect oil pressure sending unit wire. Remove and plug flexible fuel line coming from fuel tank. Disconnect vacuum lines, carbon canister hose, heater hoses and electrical wiring from engine. On 5.0L MPFI models, disconnect chassis fuel line quick disconnect fittings at fuel rails.
  4. Disconnect accelerator cable, transmission shift rod and speed control linkages from throttle body. On 5.0L MPFI, after disconnecting accelerator and T.V. cable from throttle body, disconnect throttle bracket from upper intake manifold and set aside with cables attached.
  5. Disconnect primary wire at coil and brake booster hose at engine. Remove bellhousing-to-engine upper bolts. Raise front of vehicle. Remove starter. Separate exhaust pipes from manifolds.
  6. Disconnect engine mounts from brackets on frame. Remove converter inspection plate and flex plate-to-converter attaching bolts. Remove remaining bellhousing-to-engine bolts.
  7. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Attach engine hoist and carefully separate engine from transmission. Lift engine from vehicle taking care not to damage rear cover plate.
  1. Remove engine cover. Disconnect battery. Drain cooling system. Remove grille assembly with bracket and gravel deflector. On 5.0L MPFI, remove air cleaner, air ducts and closure hose. Discharge A/C system. Remove hood lock support and condenser upper mounting brackets (if equipped).
  2. Remove condenser and disconnect lines at compressor. Remove accelerator cable bracket. Disconnect radiator hoses from radiator and heater hoses from engine. Disconnect automatic transmission lines at radiator. Remove fan, shroud and radiator.
  3. Disconnect alternator wiring. On 5.8L MPFI, remove air cleaner, air duct, valve assembly, and exhaust manifold shroud. Remove flex tube from exhaust manifold stove. On all models, disconnect throttle linkage from throttle body and remove cable bracket.
  4. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove shift rod. On 5.8L MPFI, disconnect fuel inlet and return lines and remove throttle body with spacer plate and all vacuum hoses from engine. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter.
  5. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds. Disconnect transmission filler tube from right cylinder head. Remove engine mount attaching bolts and nuts. Remove starter. NOTE: Right engine mount through bolt on 7.5L engines is installed from front of vehicle. Left engine mount through bolt is installed from rear.
  6. Remove bellhousing-to-engine bolts (manual transmission). On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove converter inspection cover bolts. Remove flex plate-to-converter nuts. Remove bolts attaching adapter plate to converter housing. Remove converter housing-to-cylinder block lower bolts.
  7. Remove ground strap from engine block. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Remove power steering pump drive belt and front bracket (if equipped). Disconnect engine wiring loom and position aside.
  8. Disconnect A/C compressor clutch electrical connector (if equipped). Install Lifting Bracket (T75T-6000-A) to intake manifold. Remove upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Attach lifting device to engine. Carefully move engine forward and remove from vehicle.

7.3L DIESEL

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable from both batteries. Mark hood hinges and remove hood. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly. Cover intake opening. Remove fan, clutch assembly and fan shroud halves. NOTE: Fan and clutch assembly are secured with left-hand threads.
  2. Remove automatic transmission cooler lines from radiator (if equipped). Remove radiator with hoses. Remove A/C compressor drive belt and A/C compressor and position on upper radiator support with lines attached (if equipped).
  3. Remove power steering pump drive belt. Remove power steering pump and position aside with hoses attached. Disconnect fuel supply line heater and alternator wiring. Disconnect all sending unit wires from engine. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables from injection pump.
  4. Remove accelerator cable bracket from engine and position aside. Remove transmission kickdown rod from injection pump (if equipped). Disconnect main wiring harness connector from right side of engine. Disconnect engine ground strap from rear of engine.
  5. Disconnect fuel return hose from left rear of engine. Remove vacuum supply hose from pump. Remove upper transmission-to-engine bolts. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Raise vehicle.
  6. Disconnect both battery ground cables at engine. Disconnect and plug fuel supply line at fuel supply pump. Disconnect starter cables. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds. Remove engine mount-to-engine nuts. Remove flywheel inspection plate.
  7. Remove flex plate-to-converter bolts. On Van models, remove transmission and engine oil dipstick tubes. On all models, lower vehicle. Support transmission with floor jack.
  8. Remove 4 lower transmission-to-engine bolts. Attach lifting device to engine. Lift engine to clear No. 1 crossmember. Pull engine forward, rotate 45 degrees to left, and carefully lift engine from vehicle.

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
