REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Note. Only engine applications with special oil pan removal and installation procedures are included in this article.
DEPRESSURIZING FUEL SYSTEM
Note. Before disconnecting any fuel system component that may be under pressure, perform the following procedure.
Disconnect battery cable. Remove fuel tank cap. Remove cap from pressure relief valve located on fuel supply manifold and attach EFI Pressure Gauge (T80L-9974-B). Use pressure release button on gauge to bleed off pressure and fuel into an approved container.
Another method of depressurizing system is by disconnecting inertia switch and cranking engine for a minimum of 20 seconds.
Note. On all engines discharge A/C and remove A/C lines to remove oil pan (if necessary).
2.3L 4-CYL
- On engines with A/T, oil pan must be removed from front of engine compartment. On models with M/T, oil pan must be removed from rear of engine compartment.
- Remove air cleaner, dipstick, oil cooler lines at radiator (if equipped) and fan shroud. On automatic transmission, remove radiator retaining bolts and position radiator out of way.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove engine mount retaining nuts. Drain engine oil. Disconnect starter cable and remove starter. Disconnect exhaust manifold tube at thermactor check valve. Disconnect catalytic converter at inlet pipe.
- Remove insulator and retainer assembly at transmission. Remove transmission mount to crossmember retaining nuts. On automatic transmission models, remove bellcrank from converter housing. Remove oil cooler lines from retainer on block and remove front crossmember. On manual transmission models, disconnect right front lower shock absorber mount.
- Position jack under engine. Lift upward 2 1/2" (63 mm) from engine mounts and block with wood. Remove jack. On automatic transmission models, place jack under transmission and raise slightly. Remove pan retaining bolts and lower pan to chassis.
- To remove oil pan, remove oil pump drive and pick-up tube assembly. Lower assembly into oil pan prior to pan removal. Remove oil pump assembly and pan from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedures.

2.9L V6
- Disconnect battery cable. Remove air intake. Remove fan shroud. Remove distributor. Drain crankcase and remove transmission filler tube (if equipped). Remove oil filter. Disconnect muffler inlet (except 2WD Ranger). Disconnect and lower oil cooler bracket.
- Remove starter motor. Disconnect front stabilizer bar (if equipped) and position forward. Position jack under engine. Raise engine to install wooden blocks between front insulator mounts and No. 2 crossmember. Lower engine onto blocks and remove jack. Lower pan. Remove oil pump and pick-up assembly into pan (except Ranger 2WD). Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedures.

3.0L V6
Disconnect battery cable. Remove dipstick. Raise vehicle. Remove retainer clip and electrical connector at oil low level sensor (if equipped). Drain engine oil. Remove starter motor. Remove attaching bolts and remove oil pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.

4.9L 6-CYL BRONCO & "F" PICKUP
- Drain crankcase and cooling system. Remove upper intake and throttle body. Raise vehicle, disconnect starter cable and remove starter. Remove nuts and washers from both engine front support insulators.
- Use jack to raise engine. Place 1" (25.4 mm) wood blocks between support insulators and support brackets. Remove jack. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower pan onto crossmember. Remove 2 oil pump bolts and pick-up tube nut. Lower oil pump assembly into pan. Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.
4.9L 6-CYL "E" SERIES VANS
- Drain crankcase and cooling system. Remove engine cover. Remove air cleaner and air inlet tubes from throttle body. Remove EGR valve. Remove upper intake and throttle body assembly. On E250 Heavy Duty and E350, remove thermactor check valve and hose.
- Remove upper radiator hose. Remove fan shroud. Remove auto transmission filler tube (if equipped). Remove exhaust manifold to inlet pipe nuts. Disconnect and plug fuel pump inlet hose. Remove front engine support nuts. Remove power steering return line clip located in front of No. 1 crossmember.
- Disconnect lower radiator hose and transmission cooler lines. Remove starter. Use jack to raise engine and place a 3" (76 mm) block under each engine mount. Remove jack.
- Remove oil pan dipstick tube. Remove oil pan bolts. Remove pick-up tube and screen from oil pump. Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.

5.0L & 5.8L V8 BRONCO & "F" PICKUP
- Remove fan shroud. Remove upper intake manifold. Raise vehicle. Remove nuts and washers attaching engine support insulators to chassis bracket. Disconnect oil cooler line (if equipped) on left side of radiator. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifold. Drain engine oil.
- Support transmission with jack stand and remove transmission crossmember. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower pan onto crossmember. Remove 2 oil pump bolts and pick-up tube nut. Lower oil pump assembly into pan. Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.
5.0L & 5.8L V8 "E" SERIES VANS
- Disconnect battery. Remove engine cover. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Loosen power steering pump (if equipped) and remove belt. Remove power steering pump from mount and position out of way. Remove A/C compressor and position out of way. Remove fan shroud. Disconnect upper radiator hose. Remove oil dipstick tube bolts.
- Raise vehicle. Remove splash shield from under alternator. Disconnect transmission cooler lines (if equipped). Disconnect lower radiator hose. Drain crankcase. Disconnect fuel line at fuel rail. See DEPRESSURZING FUEL SYSTEM in this article. Remove engine mount nuts. Remove dipstick tube from oil pan.
- Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifold. Disconnect manual linkage at transmission or remove automatic transmission dipstick tube. Remove center driveshaft support and remove driveshaft from transmission. Place a transmission jack, with wooden support, under oil pan.
- Engine and transmission assembly will pivot around rear engine mount. Engine and transmission assembly must remain centered in engine compartment in order for it to be raised 4" (120 mm), measured at front engine mounts. Use wooden blocks to support engine assembly in this position.
- Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan. Remove 2 oil pump bolts and pick-up tube nut (except 5.8L Winsor engine). Lower oil pump assembly into pan. Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 42
7.3L V8
- Disconnect ground cable from both batteries. Remove both engine and transmission oil dipsticks and tubes. Remove air cleaner and install Intake Manifold Cover (T83T-9424-A).
- Drain cooling system and remove lower radiator hose. Remove fan and clutch assembly using Fan Clutch Pulley Holder and Nut Wrench (T83T-6312-A and B). Remove radiator fan and clutch assembly by turning nut clockwise (left-hand thread).
- Disconnect power steering return hose from pump. Plug both hose and pump. Disconnect alternator wiring harness and fuel line heater connector from alternator. Raise vehicle. Disconnect and plug transmission cooler lines (if equipped).
- Disconnect and plug fuel pump inlet line. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Disconnect and remove muffler inlet pipe assembly. Remove upper inlet pipe mounting stud on right side exhaust manifold. Remove nuts and washers attaching engine insulators to No. 1 crossmember. Lower vehicle.
- On E250/350 install Rotunda Engine Lifting Brackets (014-00312) to front of engine. Connect Rotunda Engine Lifting Brackets (T70P-6000) to lift sling and raise engine until transmission contacts body. On F250/350 Install lifting sling to lifting eyes on intake manifold and raise engine until transmission contacts body.
- Using wooden blocks to support engine, block right side up 2" (51 mm) and block left side up 2.75" (69.9 mm). Remove flywheel inspection plate. Move fuel pump inlet line to rear of No. 1 crossmember. Move transmission cooler lines (if equipped) out of way. Remove pan attaching bolts.
- Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan. On F250/350 remove 2 oil pump bolts and pick-up tube nut. Lower oil pump assembly into pan. Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.
7.5L V8 "E" SERIES VANS
Note. 7.5L "F" Pickup oil pan removal information not available from manufacturer.
- Remove engine cover and disconnect battery. Drain cooling system. Disconnect and remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect throttle and transmission linkage at throttle body. Disconnect fuel lines at fuel rail. See DEPRESSURZING FUEL SYSTEM in this article.
- Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect transmission cooler lines (if equipped) at radiator. Disconnect engine cooler lines at oil filter adapter. Remove fan assembly and shroud. Remove radiator. Remove power steering pump bolts and secure out of way. Remove front engine mount through bolts.
- Remove dipstick tube securing nuts and remove dipstick and tube. Rotate or remove A/C lines at rear of compressor to clear dash. Remove upper intake and throttle body assembly.
- Raise vehicle. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Disconnect and remove muffler inlet pipe assembly. Disconnect shift linkage and kickdown linkage from transmission. Remove transmission dipstick assembly (if equipped). Remove drive shaft and coupling shaft assembly.
- Place a transmission jack, with wooden support, under oil pan. Engine and transmission assembly will pivot around rear engine mount. Engine and transmission assembly must remain centered in engine compartment in order for it to be raised 4" (120 mm), measured at front engine mounts. Use wooden blocks to support engine assembly in this position.
- Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan. Remove 2 oil pump bolts and pick-up tube nut. Lower oil pump assembly into pan. Remove pan. To install, reverse removal procedure.
