AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS
SERVICE INTERVALS
Check fluid level at every engine oil change. Fluid, filter change and band adjustments are not required under normal operation. If vehicle is operated under following conditions, replace transmission fluid and filter every 30 months or 30,000 miles
- In hot weather with temperature greater than 90°F (32°C), carrying heavy loads and/or in hilly terrain.
- Towing a trailer or using a car top carrier.
- In police, taxi or door-to-door delivery service.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Note. On AX4S transaxle, fluid level should only be checked when fluid is cold.
- Transmission or transaxle must be at normal operating temperature with vehicle on level ground. Apply parking brake, and run engine at curb idle. Shift gear selector lever through all positions, ending in Park.
- Fluid level should be in crosshatch area on dipstick if checked at operating temperature. If transmission is at room temperature, fluid level should be between 2 dimples on bottom of dipstick.
- DO NOT overfill. Check condition of fluid for contamination and burned smell. Fully reseat dipstick.
RECOMMENDED FLUID
Use Mercon (XT-2-QDX) ATF.
FLUID CAPACITIES
Note. Transmission fluid capacities in TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITIES table are approximate quantities. Correct fluid level should be determined using dipstick.

TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITIES
Transmission/Transaxle
- Raise and support vehicle. Place drain pan under transmission. Loosen oil pan retaining bolts. Drain fluid from transmission. Remove oil pan bolts individually. This allows remaining fluid to drain slowly to prevent spillage. Remove oil pan.
- Discard pan gasket. Remove and clean filter screen. Reinstall or replace filter screen using new "O" rings.
- Clean oil pan, and install pan using new pan gasket. Pour 3 qts. (2.8L) of fluid through filler tube. Start engine, and engage all gears. Check fluid level, adding required amount.
Note. Transmission oil cooler and lines should be thoroughly flushed if transmission is removed for any reason. Use Cooler Line Disconnector (T82L-9500-AH) when disconnecting cooler lines.
ADJUSTMENTS
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
FLC (3.0L)
Remove throttle body linkage snow shield. Disengage throttle valve adjustment tab. Rotate throttle cam pulley 2-3 times to remove previous setting. Hold transaxle throttle valve lever fully toward dash panel using a long screwdriver, and secure adjustment tab.
AOD-E, AX4S & 4R70W
- Position transmission shift lever in Overdrive position. Hold shift lever against rear overdrive stop with a constant force of about 3 lbs. (1.4 kg). Loosen shift control cable retaining nut at transmission. Ensure transmission/transaxle manual lever is in Overdrive position. Overdrive is second detent from rearmost position.
- Tighten shift control cable retaining nut to 10-18 ft. lbs. (14-25 N.m). Check transmission operation in each position. Ensure neutral start switch and back-up lights operate properly.
FLC
Position shift lever in Drive position. Loosen shift control cable retaining nut at transaxle. Ensure transaxle manual lever is in Drive position (second detent from rearmost position). Tighten retaining nut to 10-19 ft. lbs. (14-27 N.m). Check transaxle operation in all positions. Ensure neutral start switch and back-up lights operate.
KICKDOWN CABLE
Note. Information is not available from manufacturer.
AOD-E, AX4S, CD4E & 4R70W
Remove nut securing Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor to manual lever. Turn manual lever to neutral position. Loosen bolts securing MLP sensor to transaxle. Using Adjuster (T92P-70010-A), align MLP sensor slots. Tighten MLP sensor mounting bolts. Install manual lever retaining nut. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE . Test sensor operation.
Loosen Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch mounting bolts. Hold manual valve in neutral position. Insert .089" (2.3 mm) drill bit through PNP switch housing and internal actuator until bit seats against back of PNP switch. Tighten mounting bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE .
