Heater Mode (Function Selector) Switch

When the heater mode switch is in any position except OFF, power is supplied to the coil circuit of the blower motor relay. When the heater mode switch is in the OFF position, the blower motor will not operate.

Blower Motor Relay

Blower motor relay is located under left side of dash, in fuse/relay block. When current flows from the heater mode switch to the blower motor relay, it passes through the coil circuit to ground. This causes the contacts in the relay to close, allowing power to the blower motor.

Blower Motor Switch

The blower motor switch completes the blower motor ground circuit by directing current through one or more of the blower motor resistors (except high speed) or directly to ground through the blower motor switch (high speed).

Blower Motor Resistor

Blower motor resistor is located behind glove box, near blower motor. The blower motor is grounded through all 3 resistors (low speed), 2 resistors (medium-low speed), or one resistor (medium-high speed).

Thermal Limiter

The thermal limiter is part of the blower motor resistor. If airflow through the system is reduced or stopped (due to a locked blower motor wheel, etc.), the blower motor resistor may overheat, damaging the heater housing. If the temperature of the blower motor resistor increases to about 250°F (121°C), the thermal limiter opens the blower motor circuit. The thermal limiter cannot be serviced separate from the blower motor resistor.

Pollen Filter

Before air enters the system, it passes through a pollen filter. This serviceable filter is located near the bottom of the windshield, under the cowl vent screen.

Air Inlet Door

The position of this door determines whether fresh (outside) air or recirculated (inside) air enters the heater system. The door is controlled by a vacuum actuator. Vacuum is applied to the actuator through a vacuum selector valve on the heater control panel.

Air Temperature (Blend) Door

This door controls air temperature by controlling the volume of air that passes through the heater core. The door is controlled by an electric actuator. See TEMPERATURE CONTROL .

Defrost Mode Door

The position of this door determines whether or not air is directed to the defrost vents. The door is controlled by a vacuum actuator. Vacuum is applied to the actuator through a vacuum selector valve on the heater control panel.

Heater Mode Door

This door directs air to the panel vents, floor vents, or both vents. The door is controlled by a vacuum actuator. Vacuum is applied to the actuator through a vacuum selector valve on the heater control panel.

Coolant Flow Control

The system does not use a valve to control the flow of coolant through the heater core. Coolant always flows through the heater core.

This door controls air temperature by controlling the volume of air that passes through the heater core. The door is controlled by an electric air temperature actuator. Air temperature knob on heater control panel, adjusts electric air temperature actuator for desired temperature blend.

  1. Check For Voltage At Blower Motor Relay (Coil Side) Verify that fuse No. 23 (15-amp) and fuse No. 37 (30-amp) are okay. Disconnect blower motor relay connector, located behind glove box. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn heater mode switch to any position except OFF. Turn blower switch to high. Measure voltage between blower motor connector Violet/Blue wire and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 10).
  2. Check For Voltage To Blower Motor Relay (Switch Side) Measure voltage between blower motor relay connector and fuse No. 37 (30-amp). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace Central Junction Box (CJB) and retest.
  3. Checking Blower Motor Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect blower motor connector located under right side of instrument panel. Connect a jumper wire between positive battery terminal and blower motor terminal, and between negative battery terminal and blower motor terminal. If blower operates, go to next step. If blower does not operate, replace blower motor and retest system.
  4. Checking Blower Relay-To-Blower Motor Circuit For Open (CJB Connected) Measure resistance between blower relay Violet/Blue wire connector and blower motor Violet/Orange wire connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. (Scheme 2)
  5. Checking Blower Relay-To-Blower Motor Circuit For Open (CJB Disconnected) Disconnect heater blower relay connector at Violet/Blue wire. Measure resistance between blower motor Violet/Orange wire connector and Violet/Blue wire (to heater mode switch) connector. (Scheme 3) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace Central Junction Box (CJB) and retest system. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Violet/Blue wire and Violet/Orange wire and retest system.
  6. Checking Blower Motor Black/Red Circuit For Open Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect blower motor switch connector. Measure resistance between blower motor Black/Red wire connector and blower motor switch Black/Blue wire connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black/Red wire and retest system.
  7. Checking Ground Circuit For Open Disconnect blower motor resistor connector, located on back of blower motor switch. Measure resistance between blower switch Black wire connector and ground; and between blower motor resistor Black wire connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire between blower motor relay socket and ground.
  8. Checking Blower Motor Resistor For Continuity Measure resistance between blower motor resistor terminals No. 3 (Black wire) and No. 1 (Black/Blue wire). If continuity exists, replace blower motor relay and retest system. If continuity does not exist, replace blower motor resistor and retest system.
  9. Checking Air Distribution (Mode) Control Switch For MD11Voltage Turn ignition switch OFF. Disconnect mode control switch connector from back of switch. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between mode control switch Violet/White wire connector and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Violet/White wire and retest system.
  10. Checking Mode Control Switch-To-CJB For Open Turn ignition switch OFF. Measure resistance between blower motor relay (CBJ) Violet/Blue connector and mode control switch Violet/Blue connector. (Scheme 4) Is resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace mode control switch and retest system. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  11. Checking CJB-To-Mode Control Switch For Open Disconnect Central Junction Box (CJB) connector. Measure resistance between CJB Violet/Blue wire connector and mode control switch Violet/Blue wire connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CJB and retest system. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Violet/Blue wire and retest system.

AIR COMES OUT OF WRONG DUCTS

Check for vacuum leak, incorrect vacuum hose routing, or faulty vacuum actuator. see scheme 5

Scheme 5: Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-39981-S24162538932001011200000). Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect heater hoses in engine compartment, at firewall. Plug ends of heater hoses. Cap heater core pipes. Disconnect Black vacuum supply hose in engine compartment, at firewall.
  2. Lower vehicle. Detach electrical connectors from blower motor and blower motor resistor. Remove nut that secures heater housing to firewall in engine compartment.
  3. In passenger compartment, remove screw retaining lower defrost air duct from heater housing. Release 3 retaining tabs. Detach right and left air duct hoses from heater housing. Remove heater housing. (Scheme 5) To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system.
