Models With Coil Springs

Caster is built-in at factory and no adjustment is provided. If not within limits, replace parts as required.

Models With Leaf Springs

  1. Caster angle is adjusted by inserting a shim between the spring and axle. Shims are available in 0°, 1° and 2° increments. If possible, caster adjustment should always be done on right front axle to avoid changing from driveshaft alignment.
  2. To adjust caster, raise vehicle and support front axles on safety stands. Loosen "U" bolt nuts and spring from axle. Install caster shims between spring and axle.
  3. Position thin edge of shim toward front of vehicle to increase caster, thin edge toward rear of vehicle to decrease caster. After alignment tighten "U" bolt nuts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 N.m).

Note. Caster shims installed on left axle will change front driveshaft angle. If shims are used on left axle, drive shaft angle must be checked. Correct side-to-side caster variations by adjusting right axle caster.

CAMBER

The forged twin "I" beam suspension design used on E150/250/350 models has camber angle built-in at factory and no adjustment is provided. If not within limits, replace parts as necessary.

TOE

  1. Loosen adjusting sleeve clamp bolts on left end of tie rod. Rotate sleeve(s) until correct toe alignment is obtained.
  2. With clamps centered between the adjustment sleeve lock ring nibs on all other models, position clamp bolts horizontally (vertically) and with nuts pointing downward or toward front (rear) of vehicle. Tighten sleeve to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m).

Note. Steering wheel misalignment on "E" series vans can only be corrected by removing and recentering steering wheel after toe has been adjusted.

TURNING ANGLE

All models have built in steering stops which cannot be altered. E250/350 models have non-adjustable steering stop pins which are pressed into axle. These pins are matched to tire size and may require replacement if tire size is changed.
