SERVICE INTERVALS
Vehicles used in normal service do not require regularly scheduled maintenance. Fluid level should be checked whenever underhood maintenance is performed, or if leakage is detected. Clutch bands on A4LD, C-5 and C-6 should be adjusted when quality of shifts deteriorates or otherwise indicates improper band adjustment.
On vehicles used for fleet service or those operated under severe conditions (such as police, taxi or towing), regular transmission fluid changes are required every 30,000 miles.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
- With transmission at operating temperature, engine at curb idle RPM, on level surface with parking brake applied, move selector lever through all positions, ending in "PARK".
- Fluid levels should be between "ADD" and "DON'T ADD" marks on dipstick. CAUTION: DO NOT overfill.
- If fluid level is correct at room temperature, it will be between "ADD" and "DON'T ADD" marks on dipstick when normal operating temperature is reached.
RECOMMEND FLUID
On C-5 transmissions, use fluid which meets Ford specification ESP-M2C166-H or type H fluid. On A4LD, AOD and C-6 transmissions, use Dexron II or equivalent.
CAPACITY
Note. Transmission and converter assembly capacities given below are approximate, and correct fluid level should be determined by the mark on dipstick, rather than by the amount added.
| Application | Capacity Qts. (L) | |
|---|---|---|
| AOD | 12.3 (11.6) | |
| A4LD | 9.0 (8.5) | |
| C-5 | 11.0 (10.4) | |

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES
DRAINING & REFILLING
- On C-5 transmissions, disconnect fluid filler tube from oil pan to drain fluid. On all other transmissions, loosen oil pan bolts and tap pan to break gasket seal. Allow fluid to drain. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.
- On C-5 transmissions, remove and clean filter screen. Reinstall filter screen using a new gasket. On all other transmissions, discard used filter and gasket. Install new filter and gasket. On all transmissions, clean pan and install with new gasket. On C-5 transmissions, install filler tube. CAUTION: On AOD transmissions, do not attempt to reuse oil filter after soaking filter in solvent. Filter material may disintegrate.
- On all transmissions, add 3 quarts transmission fluid. Check fluid level as previously described. When filling a dry transmission and converter, refer to TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES. Recheck fluid level when transmission is at normal operating temperature. Do not overfill.
INTERMEDIATE (FRONT) BAND
- Clean dirt from band adjusting screw area. Remove and discard band adjusting screw lock nut. Install new lock nut.
- Tighten adjusting screw to 120 INCH lbs. (14 N.m). (Scheme 41) Back off screw exact number of turns. See INTERMEDIATE FRONT) OR OVERDRIVE BAND ADJUSTMENT table. Hold adjusting screw in position and tighten new lock nut to 40 ft. lbs. (56 N.m).
| Application | Back Off Screw |
|---|---|
| C-5 | 4 1/4 Turns |
| C-6 | 1 1/2 Turns |
| A4LD | 2 Turns |
INTERMEDIATE OR OVERDRIVE BAND ADJUSTMENT
Adjusting Intermediate Band. Scheme 41
C-5
- Clean all dirt from band adjusting screw area. Remove and discard adjusting screw lock nut. Install a new adjusting screw lock nut, leaving nut loose.
- Tighten band adjusting screw to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m). Back off screw EXACTLY 3 turns. Hold adjusting screw in this position and tighten lock nut.
Adjusting Low-Reverse Band (C-5). Scheme 42
A4LD, C-5, & C-6 Transmission
- Hold carburetor at wide open throttle position. Place kickdown rod downward against "through detent" stop.
- Turn kickdown screw to obtain .010-.080" (.25-2.0 mm) clearance between screw and throttle arm.
- Tighten adjusting screw lock nut (if equipped) and return carburetor and kickdown rod to normal position.
Note. Kickdown control cable self-adjusts .5-1.5" (13-38 mm) after installation by depressing accelerator pedal to floor. No adjustment is required, but cable must be locked in the adjusted position manually. Cable must be adjusted whenever removed or replaced.
AOD (5.0L 2-Bbl.) Adjustment at Carburetor
- TV control linkage is set to its proper length during initial assembly using sliding trunnion block secured at transmission end of TV control rod assembly. Under normal circumstances, it should not be necessary to alter this adjustment. Any required adjustment of TV control linkage can normally be accomplished using adjustment screw on linkage lever at carburetor.
- Check that engine idle speed is set at specification. Rotate fast idle cam on carburetor so throttle lever is at its idle stop. Place shift lever in "N", set parking brake and turn engine off. Turn linkage lever adjusting screw counterclockwise until screw end is flush with lever face.
- Turn adjusting screw clockwise to obtain .005" (.12 mm) clearance between end of screw and throttle lever. Open and close throttle to eliminate friction and recheck clearance. DO NOT apply any load on levers while checking. Turn adjusting screw clockwise 4 full turns.
- If screw travel is limited, 2 turns minimum are permitted, however 4 turns are preferred. If idle speed requires adjustment of more than 50 RPM, turn adjustment screw on linkage lever.
Note. If adjustment of linkage lever screw is not possible, adjustment of the TV control rod at transmission is required. This adjustment is also required when a new TV control rod is installed
Adjustment at Transmission
- Ensure engine idle speed is properly set. Rotate fast idle cam on carburetor so throttle lever is at its idle stop. Place transmission selector lever in Neutral and set parking brake.
- Set linkage lever adjustment screw about mid-range. Raise vehicle and allow exhaust system to cool. Loosen bolt on TV control rod trunnion block at transmission lever. Ensure that trunnion block is free to slide on rod.
- Push upward on lower end of TV rod (at transmission) to ensure that carburetor linkage is held firmly against throttle lever. Control rod should stay in position when released.
- Firmly hold TV control lever on transmission upward against internal stop and tighten trunnion block bolt in position. Lower vehicle. Check that throttle lever is against idle stop.
AOD (4.9L & 5.0L EFI) Adjustment at Carburetor/Throttle Body
- TV control cable is set and locked to its proper length during initial assembly by pushing in locking tab at carburetor end of cable assembly. When tab is unlocked, cable is released for adjustment. Under normal circumstances, it should not be necessary to alter or readjust initial setting of TV control cable.
- Idle Speed Control (ISC) plunger automatically extends when engine is shut off and moves throttle lever to fast idle in preparation for next time engine is started. The ISC plunger must be retracted as follows and in the exact sequence
- In engine compartment, near right fender well, locate Self Test Connector and Self Test Input (STI) Connector. These 2 connectors are located next to each other. (Scheme 43) Connect a jumper wire between STI connector and Signal Return (ground) of Self Test Connector.
- Turn ignition to "Run" position but DO NOT start engine. ISC plunger will retract. Wait until plunger is fully retracted (about 10 seconds). Shut off key. Remove jumper wire and air cleaner. Set parking brake and put selector in "N".
- Verify cable routing is free of sharp bends or pressure points and cable operates freely. Lubricate TV lever ball stud with grease. Check for damage to cable or rubber boot. Unlock locking tab at carburetor end by pushing up from below, and prying up rest of way to free cable.
- A retention spring must be installed on TV control lever to hold it in idle position (as far to rear as lever will travel) with about 10 lb. of force. If a suitable single spring is not available, 2 throttle return springs may be used. Attach retention spring(s) to transmission TV lever and hook rear end of spring to transmission case.
- De-cam carburetor. Carburetor throttle lever must be in anti-diesel idle position. Verify take-up spring (carburetor end of cable) properly tensions cable. If spring is loose or bottomed out, check for bent cable brackets. Push down on locking key until flush. Remove retention spring(S) from transmission TV lever.
Location of Self Test Connectors. Scheme 43
All Models
- Place selector lever in "DRIVE" position against "DRIVE" stop and apply downward force on end of selector lever to keep lever against "DRIVE" stop during adjustment.
- Loosen retaining nut at slotted end of lower rod and place manual lever into drive position (second detent from full counterclockwise position).
- Tighten nut and check transmission operation in all selector lever detent positions.
Floor Shift (Transmission Mounted Switch)
- With transmission shift linkage properly adjusted, loosen the 2 switch attaching bolts.
- Place transmission manual lever in Neutral position, then rotate switch and insert a gauge pin (No. 43 drill shank) into gauge pin holes of switch.
- Check operation of switch. Engine should start in "NEUTRAL" and "PARK" positions only.
