Note. Engine may be removed with or without transmission attached.

Aerostar

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly. Remove radiator hoses and fan shroud. Disconnect Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Remove A/C belt and electrical connectors from compressor.
  2. Remove A/C compressor and set aside. Remove engine cover. Disconnect accelerator and kickdown cables at carburetor. Label and disconnect all engine electrical connectors. Route engine wiring harness out of engine compartment. Label and disconnect all vacuum hoses.
  3. Disconnect speed control cable, (if equipped). Remove air control valve-to-catalytic converter hose. Remove Thick Film Ignition (TFI) electrical connector at distributor. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose.
  4. On manual transmission models, position shifter in Neutral. Remove shift lever-to-floor retaining bolts. Remove shift lever-to-transmission retaining bolts. Remove shift lever. Raise vehicle. Remove heater hoses from bracket underneath engine at front of crossmember.
  5. Disconnect oil cooler lines at radiator (if equipped). On 3.0L engine equipped models, remove fill tube. Position front wheels in straight ahead position. Remove intermediate steering column shaft-to-steering gear retaining bolt. Disconnect steering column from steering gear. Disconnect oil pressure sending unit wire from beneath fuel pump.
  6. Remove and plug fuel lines at fuel pump. Disconnect engine ground strap and starter cables. Route cables away from crossmember. Remove lock pin retaining hydraulic hose to slave cylinder in clutch housing (manual transmission). Remove and plug hose.
  7. Disconnect O2 sensor wire from left side exhaust manifold. Disconnect knock sensor lead from engine above starter. Remove thermactor air tube at check valve. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds. Remove exhaust pipe and catalytic converter. Remove speedometer cable from transmission. On 3.0L, remove starter assembly.
  8. Disconnect back-up light switch and shift indicator sender on manual transmissions. Disconnect neutral safety switch (automatic transmissions). Disconnect throttle and kickdown cable. Remove drive shaft and both front wheel assemblies.
  9. Separate stabilizer bar from lower control arm. Disconnect brake lines at frame bracket. Support lower control arm and detach upper control arm from spindle at upper ball joint. Place safety chains around lower control arms and upper spring seats.
  10. Remove transmission and crossmember. Position Removal Table (109-00002) under crossmember and engine assembly. Lower vehicle until crossmember rests on table. Place wood blocks under front crossmember and rear of engine (or transmission, if assembled) to keep unit level.
  11. Install safety chains around crossmember and table. With engine and crossmember securely supported on table, remove three engine and crossmember-to-frame retaining bolts from each side of vehicle. Raise body from engine and crossmember assembly.
  12. Ensure that all wires and hoses are disconnected before raising vehicle. Disconnect and plug power steering hoses from pump. Remove motor mount nuts. Remove engine from crossmember. Remove transmission if necessary.

Bronco II & Ranger

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Disconnect or remove all thermactor components that may interfere with engine removal. Remove hood, air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
  2. Remove fan shroud and position over fan. Remove radiator with hoses and shroud. Remove alternator and power brake vacuum hose from engine. If equipped, remove A/C compressor and power steering pump with hoses attached.
  3. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Disconnect and plug fuel tank line at fuel pump. Disconnect throttle cable linkage at throttle body and intake manifold. Disconnect primary wire from coil. Disconnect fuel tank-to-fuel rail lines at fuel rail.
  4. Disconnect wiring from oil pressure and engine coolant temperature sending units. Raise vehicle to disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds. Remove starter and front engine mount nuts or through bolts. Remove ground wires from engine block.
  5. On automatic transmission models, remove converter inspection cover and disconnect flex plate from converter. Remove kickdown rod and bellhousing mounting bolts. Remove adapter plate-to-converter housing bolt.
  6. Remove clutch linkage (manual transmission). Lower vehicle and attach engine hoist to brackets at exhaust manifolds. Ensure all wires and hoses are disconnected before raising engine. Support transmission. Remove engine from vehicle.
