DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Note. For Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) system information not covered in this article, see ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES section.

LH body vehicles are available with 4 types of brake system. The standard system of front disc and rear drum is not available with ABS. The second system is 4-wheel disc without anti-lock. The third system is 4-wheel disc with ABS. The fourth system is 4-wheel disc with ABS and traction control. Traction control is dependent on ABS and is not available without it.

Standard brake equipment consists of

* Double pin floating caliper front disc brakes

* Automatic adjusting rear drum brakes

* Proportioning valve on non-ABS brakes

* Master cylinder

* Vacuum power booster

* Double pin floating caliper rear disc brakes on some models.

A dual hydraulic system is diagonally split: left front-right rear, right front-left rear. Parking brakes on models with rear drum brakes use service brake shoes operated by cable. Models equipped with rear disc brakes use a separate drum as a parking brake. Drum is located inside brake disc and has cable-operated shoes.

Note. With one exception, all brakeline tubing flares are ISO (metric) standard. (Scheme 1) The one exception is the rear drum brake flex hose-to-wheel cylinder connection, which is SAE standard.
