BLEEDING PROCEDURES

  1. Fill fluid reservoir frequently during bleeding procedure. Bleed brake system in sequence. See «BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE»(ref-27173-S10599504972001011500000) table. Connect bleed hose to bleeder screw on caliper or wheel cylinder, and submerge free end in container of clean brake fluid. NOTE: Air can be trapped in hydraulic system if system is bled with wheels at full-jounce position (no vehicle weight on suspension). Before bleeding brake system, position vehicle on drive-on hoist, or raise rear wheels to normal ride height.
  2. Pump brake pedal 3 or 4 times. Press and hold brake pedal. Open bleeder screw at least 3/4 turn. Maintain pressure on brake pedal until it contacts floor, and hold at floor. Close bleeder screw.
  3. Repeat step 2) until no air bubbles appear in fluid. Repeat step 2) several more times to ensure system is fully bled. While bleeding brakes, ensure reservoir is kept full to prevent air entering system.

BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE

PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE

WARNINGThe self adjusting feature of this parking brake lever assembly contains a clock spring loaded to approximately 8 lbs. Care must be taken to prevent excessive jarring of the assembly. Do not release the self adjuster lockout device before installing cables into the equalizer. Keep hands out of self adjuster sector and pawl area. Failure to observe caution in handling this mechanism could lead to serious injury.

Parking brake cable is self-adjusting on all vehicles. Adjustment is not usually required.

Reloading Self Adjuster

  1. Insert a 1/4 INCH drive ratchet and extension into 1/4 INCH square hole located in sector of park brake pedal mechanism. (Scheme 17)
  2. Pull on ratchet and extension, rotating sector toward rear of vehicle until ratchet extension contacts back of park brake pedal. This will fully wind sector spring.
  3. Insert a pin or drill bit into park brake lever mechanism to lock sector in place. (Scheme 18) Pin used to lock sector, should be 1/8 INCH in diameter by 2 INCHES long to go through both sides of park brake mechanism.
  4. When repairs are complete, adjust rear brakes before adjusting parking brake. On drum-in-hat type of rear disc brake adjust shoe diameter 6.75 INCH (171.5 mm).

Parking Brake Adjusting Procedure

Note. The parking brake pedal must be in the fully released position when releasing self adjuster.

Be sure that all 3 park brake cables are properly assembled to the equalizer bracket prior to cable adjustment.

Be sure park brake cable is properly seated on the park brake mechanism cam surface. (Scheme 19)

Scheme 19: Parking Brake Adjusting Procedure

Using a pair of pliers, firmly grasp lock pin previously installed in park brake mechanism. Remove lock pin from park brake pedal mechanism, by pulling it firmly and rapidly from the park brake mechanism.

Apply and release the park brake lever several times. The rear wheels should rotate freely without dragging.

REAR BRAKE SHOES

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove access plug from inboard side of brake backing plate. Using brake adjuster, tighten adjuster screw until drum encounters moderate drag when rotated.
  2. Using small screwdriver, hold adjuster lever away from adjuster screw, and loosen adjuster wheel until drum spins freely. Install access plugs and rear wheels.

STOPLIGHT SWITCH

With switch installed in retaining bracket, push switch as far forward as it will go. Brake pedal will move forward slightly. Gently pull back on pedal, bringing striker back toward switch until brake pedal will go back no farther. This causes switch to ratchet backward to correct position. Very little movement is required and no further adjustment is necessary.

Note. Rear drum and hub can be removed separately or as an assembly.
