POWER STEERING PUMP R & I

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. On 3.3L engine, loosen serpentine drive belt by loosening generator (alternator) mounting bolt and adjustment bolt lock nut. On 3.5L engine, loosen serpentine belt by loosening adjustment pulley lock nut and bolt.
  2. On all models, raise vehicle and support on jack stands. Remove serpentine drive belt from power steering pump pulley and set belt aside. Place drain pan under vehicle to collect power steering fluid.
  3. Remove hose clamp from power steering fluid reservoir hose, at power steering pump. Carefully remove power steering fluid reservoir hose from power steering pump.
  4. Remove power steering pressure hose and return hose from power steering pump. Remove power steering pump bolts through access holes in power steering pump drive pulley.
  5. Remove power steering pump from beneath vehicle. Mount power steering pump in vise using one of the power steering pump mounting bosses. Remove pump pulley using Puller (C-4333).

Installation

  1. Install pump pulley using Pulley Installer (C-4063). The spacer that is provided with either replacement power steering pump or pulley MUST be used when pulley is installed on pump. The spacer positions pulley to correctly maintain accessory drive belt alignment. Remove spacer from end of pump shaft.
  2. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. On 3.5L engine, correct orientation of power steering pressure hose at power steering pump must be maintained to ensure correct clearance between hose and throttle body cam. On all models, fill power steering fluid reservoir and check fluid level. See «FLUID LEVEL CHECK»(ref-52533-S01080229182001092500000) .

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove battery from vehicle. Locate power steering fluid reservoir on left frame rail, next to battery. Raise and support vehicle. Place drain pan under vehicle to collect power steering fluid.
  2. Remove hose clamp from power steering fluid reservoir hose, at reservoir. Carefully remove power steering fluid reservoir hose from reservoir. Remove power steering return hose from side of power steering fluid reservoir.
  3. Lower vehicle. Remove battery tray. Remove power steering fluid reservoir from left frame rail. To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill power steering fluid reservoir and check fluid level. See «FLUID LEVEL CHECK»(ref-52533-S01080229182001092500000) .

RACK & PINION ASSEMBLY R & I

WARNINGOn models with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), before any repairs are performed, disconnect and isolate battery ground cable. Failure to do so could result in accidental deployment of the air bag and possible personal injury.

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Loosen gear shift cable bolt and remove gearshift cable from transaxle shift lever.
  2. Lower vehicle. On 3.5L engine, disconnect throttle cable from throttle body and cable bracket. On all models, remove wiper arms from wiper arm pivots. Remove 6 screws, cowl closure panel and weatherstrip as an assembly.
  3. Disconnect air plenum from throttle body, PCV air tube and idle air control motor. Remove air plenum from right side of vehicle. Disconnect wiper module wiring harness. Remove 5 screws and wiper module from cowl panel. Remove power brake booster vacuum hose from intake manifold. Position hose aside.
  4. Turn front wheels to full left position, then turn wheels back until roll pin in steering gear coupling is accessible. (Scheme 2) Mark steering gear coupling for installation reference. Using a pin punch, carefully remove roll pin. CAUTION: Place ignition (lock cylinder) in locked position to keep steering column from rotating after steering gear coupling is removed. If steering column shaft rotates beyond normal range, air bag clockspring will be damaged.
  5. Pump brake pedal at least 20 times to bleed vacuum from power brake booster. Disconnect pedal travel sensor. Using a small screwdriver, remove retaining ring from pedal travel sensor grommet. (Scheme 3) Carefully pull out pedal travel sensor. DO NOT twist. NOTE: Power brake booster must be bled of all vacuum before removing pedal travel sensor. Failure to bleed vacuum may result in "O" ring being sucked into booster. If "O" ring is sucked into booster, power brake booster must be replaced.
  6. Remove brake master cylinder, with hydraulic lines connected, from power brake booster. Carefully position master cylinder against left shock tower. Remove power steering pressure hose and return hose from power steering gear.
  7. Bend back lock tabs on inner tie rod bolts. Remove bolts and detach inner tie rod ends from steering gear. Lay inner tie rods, plate and bolts on top of transaxle bellhousing.
  8. Remove 4 bolts and steering gear from crossmember. Slide steering gear forward to disengage steering gear coupling from steering gear shaft. DO NOT rotate steering gear shaft. Carefully remove steering gear through cowl opening.
  1. If a replacement steering gear is being installed, carefully grasp steering gear shaft and rotate until steering gear is in full left turn position. Rotate steering gear shaft back from full left turn position until master spline on steering gear shaft is aligned with master spline on steering gear coupling. With master spline aligned, attach steering gear to steering gear coupling.
  2. If original steering gear is being installed, align mark on steering gear shaft with mark on steering gear coupling. With marks aligned, attach steering gear to steering gear coupling.
  3. Align steering gear mounting holes with crossmember. Install 4 steering gear bolts and brake line routing clip under left steering gear mounting bracket. Tighten steering gear bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-52533-S15785502752001092500000) .
  4. Install steering gear coupling roll pin. Roll pin must be installed until it is flush with top edge of coupling. Install power steering pressure hose and return hose to power steering gear. NOTE: On 3.5L engine, correct orientation of power steering pressure hose at power steering pump must be maintained to ensure correct clearance between hose and throttle body cam.
  5. Align center of steering gear with inner tie rod ends. Ensure washers are installed between tie rod ends and steering gear. Install plate and torque inner tie rod bolts. Bend lock tabs against bolts.
  6. Install pedal travel sensor retaining ring on pedal travel sensor grommet. Tab on retaining ring should be located in top notch of grommet. Coat pedal travel sensor and "O" ring with clean brake fluid. Install "O" ring in pedal travel sensor grommet.
  7. Push pedal travel sensor straight into grommet. Ensure pedal travel sensor tab is past retaining ring on pedal travel sensor grommet. Connect pedal travel sensor wiring. Install brake master cylinder.
  8. Attach power brake booster vacuum hose to intake manifold. Attach gear shift cable to transaxle shift lever. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill power steering fluid reservoir and check fluid level. See «FLUID LEVEL CHECK»(ref-52533-S01080229182001092500000) .

Note. Anytime steering gear assembly is removed from vehicle, or tie rod ends are loosened, a front end alignment must be performed.
