DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Power operated radio antenna is a telescoping type, extended and retracted by a reversible electric motor. Antenna is controlled by a combination of an internal relay and limit switches which are built into antenna motor housing. Antenna is actuated when radio is switched ON with ignition in ON or ACCESSORY position. When ignition or radio is turned OFF, antenna mast should retract fully.
Many antenna problems can be avoided by frequent cleaning of antenna mast telescoping section. Clean mast sections with a clean soft cloth.
Before an antenna is removed, antenna performance should be tested to determine if problem is reception or operational.
Whenever an operational malfunction occurs, first verify that radio antenna wire harness is properly connected. Check all connectors before starting normal testing and repair procedures. See TESTING .
POWER ANTENNA OPERATIONAL TEST
- To extend antenna, using jumper wires, attach one lead end to positive battery source and the other end to Red or Green wire terminals. Connect second lead to ground and Black wire terminal.
- To retract antenna, attach positive lead to Red wire terminal with Black wire terminal to ground. If motor does not operate, replace antenna assembly.
- If motor runs freely and antenna does not extend or retract, mast or drive assembly is at fault. Remove mast and verify that all drive teeth are intact. If teeth are not intact, replace mast. See «ANTENNA MAST»(ref-27174-S24526431722001010800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- If mast jumps or travel rate is slow or if motor labors: Check for bent mast. If bent, replace mast. Check for dirty mast and clean as necessary. If corroded, replace mast. If cleaning antenna sections does not solve problem, mast should be replaced. If mast fails to extend or retract fully, or motor continues to operate after full extension or retraction of mast, check for broken teeth on mast drive rod or bent mast.
- If mast checks good, antenna assembly should be replaced. Antenna assembly fault may be traced to one or more of the following conditions: Broken lead-in wire or shielding. Grounded lead-in wire or mast. Moisture in support tube or lead-in assembly. Poor connection at antenna lead-in assembly or shielding ground.
