DESCRIPTION
FWD cars use electric motor-driven cooling fans. Fan assembly includes a motor support, which may include a shroud (depending on model). Fan assembly is fastened to radiator by clips or bolts.
Note. Fan cannot be repaired. If fan is warped, cracked or otherwise damaged, replace fan or fan assembly. Fan is secured to motor shaft with a clip.
OPERATION
On all models, dual 2-speed cooling fans operate simultaneously and are turned on when coolant temperature becomes excessive or A/C head pressure indicates A/C operation. On models with automatic transmission, a fluid thermistor may have some influence on fan operation. See COOLING FAN OPERATING TEMPERATURE table.
Fan should not operate during engine cranking. A message is sent to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) under these conditions, and PCM turns fans on through a radiator fan relay.
Without A/C operation, cooling fans turn on or off when coolant temperature sensor signals PCM that coolant temperature has reached a specified temperature. See COOLING FAN OPERATING TEMPERATURE table. Regardless of vehicle speed, fans will turn off when coolant temperature drops.
