Engine Cooling Fan (Except Coupe): Other Dodge Stratus I

ELECTRIC FAN MOTOR

Disconnect electric fan motor. Observing correct polarity, connect a 12-volt battery to electric fan motor connector terminals. (Scheme 1) Replace electric fan motor if it fails to operate.

Note. If fan motor is noticeably overheated, system voltage may be too high. Check charging system.

FAN RELAYS & PCM

CAUTIONCheck electric fan motor operation before checking fan relay and PCM. Ensure PCM is securely grounded.

  1. With ignition on, measure voltage at Red/Light Green wire of low speed and high speed radiator fan relays. Radiator fan relays are located in Power Distribution Center (PDC); located on left side of engine compartment. A label identifying components and circuits is located under PDC cover.
  2. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for open or shorted Red/Light Green wire. Check for an open (40-amp) fuse No. 19 (fuse No. 17 on Sebring Convertible) located in PDC.
  3. Connect jumper wire between Red/Light Green wire and Dark Green/Light Green wire of low speed radiator fan relay. Move jumper wire to Red/Light Green wire and Yellow/Violet wire (Yellow/Red wire on Sebring Convertible) of high speed radiator fan relay. If fan operates at low and high speeds, go to next step. If fan fails to operate, check for open or shorted Dark Green/Light Green wire and/or Yellow/Violet wire (Yellow/Red wire on Sebring Convertible) between radiator fan relay and fan motor connector.
  4. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Check for loose connections at fan motor and fan motor relays. If all connections are okay, check Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If PCM detects a problem with cooling fan, a DTC will be set in memory. NOTE: For additional information on DTCs and trouble shooting with DRB or scan tool, see either «TESTS W/CODES - 2.4L»(ref-24766) or «TESTS W/CODES - 2.5L»(ref-24768) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
  5. If DTC indicates RAD FAN RELAY CIRCUIT, turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at Light Green/Black wire of low and high speed fan relay connectors. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If voltage is 0-1 volt, go to step 7).
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. PCM is located on left front corner of engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at PCM 40-pin Black connector terminals No. 55 (Dark Blue/Tan wire) and No. 69 (Dark Blue/Pink wire). (Scheme 2) If battery voltage exists and female terminals are not damaged, replace PCM and retest system. If no voltage exists, repair open or shorted Dark Blue/Tan wire or Dark Blue/Pink wire from low or high speed radiator fan relay to PCM.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. PCM is located on left front corner of engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at Light Green/Black wire of low and high speed fan relay connectors. If battery voltage exists, replace PCM. If voltage is 0-1 volt, go to next step.
  8. With ignition on, measure voltage at Dark Blue/Tan wire of low speed radiator fan relay connector and Dark Blue/Pink wire of high speed radiator fan relay connector. If battery voltage exists, replace radiator fan relay. If no voltage exists, repair open or shorted Dark Blue/Tan wire or Dark Blue/Pink wire between fan relay and PCM. Turn ignition off, reconnect PCM connector and retest system.
